Carson City begins recreational cannabis sales

Carson City began legal, recreational cannabis sales Monday, at two locations. Rise Dispensary located on the south end of town and Sierra Wellness on the east side opened their doors at 9 a.m. Any customer 21 years of age or older can now legally purchase cannabis products at these Carson City locations.

A cold front expected to move into the Carson City region will bring gusty winds, chilly temperatures and chances for snow showers on New Years Day, according to the National Weather Service.

Celebrate New Years with CASI bingo. That's right CASI will be hosting bingo at the Carson City Senior Center, 911 Beverley Drive on New Years day! Bring your friends and family for a fun and exciting afternoon of bingo. In addition to the prize money given to the winners of the games there will be raffle prizes and a 50/50 drawing too. Doors will open at 11:30 AM and the first game will start at 12:30. Buy-in is $10 and extra packets are $5. All other games are $1. The snack bar will be open offering hot dogs, chips and candy. Sometimes the wonderful CASI volunteers will bring soup.

Conditioning Hike Program - Annual New Years Day Hike

This year you will be able to hike from the Morgan Mill River Put-In to the Mexican Dam and back. Meet at 9:00 am at the Morgan Mill parking lot for the full hike, about 12.75 miles roundtrip. For those who wish to do a partial hike, you can meet us at Hidden Meadows Trailhead parking area at 965 Buzzy's Ranch Road, or the entrance to Saddle Ranch on Carson River Road, or at the barn o Silver Saddle Ranch.

Topaz Lake, which is located along U.S. 395 at the Nevada-California state line, will open its 2015 fishing season, one half hour before sunrise, on Thursday, Jan. 1.

If the weather is decent, if you don't have a massive hangover, if you like to fish and if you don't have anything else planned, this could be a fun way to start the New Year. Bundle up though because daytime temperatures in the area are not expected break 30 degrees.

Children's Museum of Northern Nevada gets a visit from Santa Friday, December 12

Nevada Highway Patrol offers travel and safety tips for Christmas holiday motorists

With Christmas and New Years Day each falling on a Tuesday this year, most families may be planning one or both holidays into a four-day event and traveling out of the area or staying near home and celebrating locally. Long holiday weekends generally means more motorists traveling on our state’s roadways thus increasing the calls for service for our agency. Please assist us with our highway safety efforts this holiday season by always driving with safety in mind first, being courteous to others motorists, and never drink and drive.

The winter that never started

Last year was the winter that never stopped, as we were still getting snowed on down here in the valley in late spring.

But this year is the winter that never started. No snow at all in December. Look up at the hills, and you might mistake it for September.

Texting while driving in Nevada will earn you a fine come Sunday

For those of you who must text while driving, be prepared to pony up a fine starting New Years Day.

Since Oct. 1, Nevada Highway Patrol troopers have been giving out warning for texting while driving, writing up more than 600 warnings in the Reno-Carson City area. But the warnings come to an end on Sunday. This also applies to those who use a cell phone without a hands-free device.
