Visitors to the Nevada State Railroad Museum on Memorial Day weekend will see the fully restored 1875 locomotive Glenbrook under steam for public viewing and can take a ride on the steam train pulled by the Virginia & Truckee locomotive No. 25 from 10 a.m. to 4 p.m. Sunday and Monday.

Several Nevada museums are offering free admission to the nation’s active duty military personnel including National Guard and Reserve and up to five members of their families from Memorial Day through Labor Day 2016.

Frances Humphrey Lecture Series presents: Historic Fishermen’s Caches from Winnemucca Lake, Nevada by Gene Hattori, PhD. The event is Thursday, from 6:30 to 8:30 p.m. at the Nevada State Museum, 600 N Carson St, in Carson City.

The Nevada State Railroad Museum and its restoration team were honored with Carson City’s 2016 Historic Preservation Award presented at the board of supervisors meeting Thursday. The award recognizes decades of accumulated public service in the preservation, restoration and celebration of Nevada’s railroad heritage, centered on the recent completion of the Glenbrook steam locomotive project.

Ready to have some fun? Virginia City’s Chili on the Comstock Cook-off goes on all weekend. For some healthier fare, hit up the Spring Farmers Market downtown. Go fly a kite at Dangberg Home Historic Park, just past Douglas High School on Highway 88; their ‘Something in the Wind’ Celebration is both Saturday and Sunday. Ready for a great day, Carson City? It’s a day of beginnings all over the place. The new Italian restaurant, Angelina’s, inside the Carson Nugget is celebrating its Grand Opening all weekend. The annual Cowboy Festival in Genoa begins this afternoon and includes music, demonstrations, art exhibits, and more. Join the United Federal Credit Union for their ribbon cutting this afternoon, and enjoy live music and BBQ. Today is ‘Dining Out for Life,’ so head to Peg’s Glorified Ham and Eggs, Sassafras, or Adele’s to help raise funds for Northern Nevada Hopes.

Food Truck Friday is the theme of the new United Federal Credit Union’s Grand Opening week: you can find them across the street from Mill’s Park on Williams St. Earth Day weekend kicks off at Western Nevada College with a Gem and Mineral Sale during the day, followed by a presentation by World Renowned Scientist: Dr. Charles Goldman in Marlette Hall at 7 p.m. Break a leg to the cast of ‘Harvey.’ The Procenium Players open their two weekend run at the Brewery Arts Center’s Black Box Theater tonight.

Since the early 1980s, May has been a month for celebrating historic preservation and archaeology in Nevada. This year, the theme acknowledges the 50th anniversary of the National Historic Preservation Act, which helps to stabilize neighborhoods and downtowns, contributes to public education, attracts investment, creates jobs, generates tax revenues, supports small business and affordable housing, and powers Nevada’s heritage tourism industry.

University of Nevada Cooperative Extension’s 4-H presents Capital City Farm Days this Thursday and Friday at Fuji Park in Carson City,

Thirty presenters, including representatives from the Nevada Department of Agriculture, the Bureau of Land Management, the Nevada State Museum, and other local and state agriculture and natural resources organizations, will teach preschool and elementary-age youth about Nevada agriculture, where food and fiber come from, and environmental issues related to agriculture.

In the world of coins, Carson City is a collector’s delight. Famous as the home of the U.S. Branch Mint that made some of the rarest of coins from 1870 to 1893, the Nevada State Museum, Carson City, hosts a special celebration of its coin-making past each year for National Coin Week.

What a wonderful community we live in. Music, theater, hiking, biking, wining, dining, walking, TED-talking, animal loving, state governing, and so much more are available in our valley. Happy Tuesday, Carson City. The Parks and Rec Easy Walk is something special today. A tour of our Historical west side will give you a new perspective on some of the neat old houses we have around downtown. If you get hungry, it’s hard to go wrong with all you can eat wings at Firkin and Fox; they’ve set up new patio seating on the south side while their Third Street patio gets rebuilt. Lunch or dinner at Chili’s will help the homeless pets that Nevada Humane Society serves.

This month’s installment of the Francis Humphrey Lecture Series focuses on the history of the U.S.S. Nevada. The Capital City Arts Initiative announces its exhibition, Great Basin Native Artists, with art works by seven Native American artists at the Carson City Community Center's Sierra Room that is running now through July 6, 2016. The Community Center is located at 851 E. William Street, Carson City.

It came to life in 1916, survived the attacks at Pearl Harbor and produced the first recipient of the Medal of Honor for World War II. Honoring the 100th anniversary of the commissioning of the battleship USS Nevada, the Nevada State Museum, Carson City, presents a lecture by Reno Judge Chuck Weller from 6:30 to 8 p.m. Thursday, March 24.

St. Patrick’s Day is around the corner and the celebrations have begun. The Children’s Museum of Northern Nevada has crafts and Irish dancers. Her final resting place may lie somewhere at the bottom of the South Pacific Ocean, but the U.S.S. Nevada BB-36 will always have a memorial home here in Nevada's capital.

Two years ago, her memory was honored at the State Capitol with a plaque that commemorated the centennial of her initial launching.

The travels and inventions of J.W. Davis, known as the first fabricator of Levi’s, come to the Nevada State Museum from 6:30 to 8 p.m., Thursday Feb. 25, in a talk by genealogist Kathleen P. Clemence.

The inventor of riveted pants came to the American West from Russia, via the Canadian wilderness, Clemence said, with business ventures along the way. A distant relative of Davis’ wife, Annie Packscher, Clemence has conducted extensive research into the intriguing family. Fashion, fabric and function resulted in the work pants that became a famous part of Nevada history.
