Midnight Madness has descended upon the valley, bringing with it a 72 hour softball tournament at Centennial Park. Don’t be surprised to see more cyclists on the road: an unofficial pre-ride for Epic Rides is this weekend. Head to the Nevada State Railroad Museum to see the Glenbrook all steamed up. Be ready for anything with this sneak peak of this weekend’s activities. You can probably take ‘beach day’ off of your agenda. Spring has been briefly usurped by a blustery chill. Grab a coat and hit the town anyway. The early spring farmers market downtown, the Cops and Kids event at the Sheriff’s Department, and the Annual Relay for Life at Mills Park are still a good time. This weekend is jam-packed full of fun, so take a look at the weekend event summary for your options indoors and out.

How’d we get to Thursday so quickly? Choose from live music at Living the Good Life, a fun night of karaoke at Jimmy G’s Cigar Bar, or even a lecture on the Dayton Cemetery. Join Muscle Powered for a Washoe Valley hike this morning or a bike ride this afternoon. Maybe some salsa dancing is what you’re in the mood for; if so, head to El Charro Avita. THURSDAY:

Ready to have some fun? Virginia City’s Chili on the Comstock Cook-off goes on all weekend. For some healthier fare, hit up the Spring Farmers Market downtown. Go fly a kite at Dangberg Home Historic Park, just past Douglas High School on Highway 88; their ‘Something in the Wind’ Celebration is both Saturday and Sunday. Don’t forget to leave non-perishable food by your mailbox: the annual ‘Stamp Out Hunger’ food drive is today. Take a gander at the whole list, there is plenty of stuff to do in the Carson City area this weekend.

Much love to the Mothers in our valley, and those that we love like Mothers. Treat that special lady to a day at the Carson Hot Springs. She gets to ride free with a child at the RSVP Spring Carnival. Travel to Virginia City and back on the historic Virginia and Truckee Steam Train. Brunch, bingo, and BMX racing are just a few of the other things that Sunday has to offer.

SUNDAY: Mother’s Day

I am not even going to attempt guessing what weather we have in store. The west side of the Sierras are notoriously unpredictable. You are much better off betting on the Kentucky Derby; and the Firkin and Fox is just the place to cheer on your favorite horse.

Let someone else take care of Sunday breakfast. The Elks Club’s monthly pancake breakfast starts at 8:30 a.m., but they’ll start serving bloody marys at 7 a.m. if you need some hair of the dog. Go for a strike at Carson Lanes with their Breakfast and Bowl special. The Capital City Community Band welcomes area elementary school choirs onstage during today’s free concert, A Salute to Young Musicians, at the Community Center.

SUNDAY:

Got kids? The Boys and Girls Club is where you want to be today for the Second Annual Early Childhood Expo. Curious George and Clifford the big red dog can’t wait to say hello. Take a trip out to the Dayton State Park to search for animal tracks and more with a park ranger. If you’re kid free today, then the Downtown Business Association Wine Walk is for you. The young and the young-at-heart will find something fun to do this weekend: just check out the whole list for your options and hit the town.

Today is Veterans’ Day: a day to commemorate the men and women of the Armed Forces that have fought, and possibly died, for our country. Thank you for your service. Several places around town are offering something special for our Veterans today: free coffee, free breakfast, free lunch, etc. You’ll need to bring proof of service. Tonight, everyone is invited to the party. Check out the Junebugs at Living the Good Life. The Portland pop-folk band returns for a night of fun and dancing.

Are you ready for this? Nevada Day weekend has arrived and brings with it a downtown filled with friends, neighbors, and fun. Hot air balloons, the annual beard contest, the parade, tours of the Governor’s Mansion, and more make this time of year amazing. The carnival at Mills Park, and the Pow-Wow at the Carson Colony take the festivities to the next level.

It’s fireworks Friday here in Carson City. Harley Davidson is throwing a party for Street Vibrations with live music, vendors and more. Look to the sky around 8:30 p.m. to catch the fireworks show. Spruce up your resume and head to the Community Center. A job fair with more than 50 employers opens its doors to the public at 2 p.m. Go Big Blue! The varsity football game against Hug High School starts at 7 p.m. following the Homecoming Float Parade. Catch some live music at Living the Good Life or Westside Pour House. You’ll find a reason to laugh at Carson Comedy inside the Carson Nugget.

This last weekend of August is filled with ways to celebrate your community. Carson Animal Shelter Initiative, better known as CASI, hosts their annual Bark, Whine, and Dine Fundraiser at Fuji Park. Animal lovers can also head to Carson Catalina Apartments for a rummage sale that benefits the Carson Tahoe SPCA. The Carson City Sheriff's Office young Explorers will host a fundraising car wash; The Marine Corp League can be found at the north Carson Walmart; half of the donations received will go to Deputy Howell’s family fund. And don’t miss out on the drought-friendly water balloon ice bucket challenge raising funds for ALS at Butler Meats on Sunday.

I hope you’re in the mood for music, Carson City. The annual Jazz and Beyond Festival begins today with an art show and concert on the lawn of the Bliss Mansion. Over the next two weeks you’ll have a plethora of melody to choose from at venues throughout town. Enjoy an outdoor concert at Third and Carson with Drinking with Clowns. Sassafras is thrilled to grab Groove Session for a show; they’re usually off touring. Mo’z Motley Blues will give you a reason to dance at Living the Good Life. Sunday funday for families! Start the day at the Elks Club; the WNC Student Veteran Club is hosting a pancake breakfast and kids activities. Hit up the Nevada State Railroad Museum for rides on the Steam Train. Mills Park has a much smaller train to ride and plenty of room to run, play, and picnic. Watch the kittens play at Petsmart: SPCA is hosting a kitten party for adoptable pets. A concert with the Mark Sexton Band at the Dangberg Home Historic Ranch is a great way to end the weekend.

The Ghost Walk returns: meet behind the Firkin and Fox for some local haunted history. Teens will enjoy a ‘Night at the Library’ with pizza and games. And as always, the Nevada State Railroad Museum beckons: this week with rides on the Steam Train available.

Local families won’t want to miss a Sunday morning Western Nevada College’s Student Veterans Club has planned for them.
The Student Veterans Club has arranged a pancake breakfast and games for children starting at 8 a.m. Sunday (today) at the Elks Lodge, 515 N. Nevada St. in Carson City. Breakfast will be served until early afternoon.

Dangberg Ranch, off Highway 88 in Minden, is kicking off their Summer Concert Series with the Nighthawks. Bring a chair or blanket, and the whole family.

The solstice couldn’t come at a better time: we need some long days to get through all the fun stuff Carson City has crammed into one weekend. The annual Powwow at the Stewart Indian School runs Friday through Sunday, so you’ll have plenty of time to see the dancing, peruse the crafts, and eat an Indian Taco. Don’t miss the Fly-in and Open House at the Carson City Airport: fun for the whole family. And I would be remiss if I didn’t mention one of Carson City’s favorite events: the Taste of Downtown. Music, food, and more from Carson Mall to Williams Street. Have a great time, and be safe.

Did you put your Mother’s Day shopping off to the last moment? Head over to the Carson Mall for their arts and craft show. It’s pretty hard to go wrong with a nice dinner or brunch for her special day. Take a ride on the McKeen Motor Car at the Nevada State Railroad Museum or the Ferris Wheel at RSVP’s Spring Fair and Carnival. And you can take Mom to a matinee of Western Nevada Musical Theatre's "Music Man" at the Bob Boldrick Theater in the Community Center.

Take a ride on the McKeen Motor Car at the Nevada State Railroad Museum or the Ferris Wheel at RSVP’s Spring Fair and Carnival. A Harmonica and Strings Concert at Empire Elementary School showcases what some of our talented students can do. Get up early and head over to the Carson City Airport if your youngster has any interest in planes: Young Eagles flights are happening today if the weather permits.

Every year on March 17, the Irish and the Irish-at-heart across the globe observe St. Patrick’s Day. What began as a religious feast day for the patron saint of Ireland has become an international festival celebrating Irish culture with parades, dancing, special foods and a whole lot of green. Carson City definitely gets in on the game with festivities all over town. Corned beef and cabbage, green beer, and live music abound. I've included a short YouTube video of Tom and Mary Kay Aufrance who will be performing at Red's this evening.

The wine walk is on the top of the weekend to-do list for many of you, but Carson City has a lot more going on. Ascent Runs is hosting a 5/10K and a half marathon at C-Hill on Saturday. You can register at the race, just make sure you aren’t late. Youth Football season has arrived with sign-ups for SYFL and Pop Warner on Saturday. Cheer on the Western Nevada College Wildcats as their Baseball and Softball teams battle against Salt Lake City Community College.

Welcome to the weekend, Carson City! The first Saturday is always fun here, the Downtown Business Association hosts their monthly wine walk, rain, snow, or shine; and don't miss the raffle with some great prizes. The Elks Lodge is holding a hoop shoot contest for ages 8-13 (as of April 1, 2015), with the winners headed to the District Hoop Shoot in Reno. This is also the last weekend to enjoy a sleigh ride at Sand Harbor; bundle up and enjoy a gorgeous view.

I follow the pages of local businesses and organizations, search website calendars, keep my ear to the ground, and compile a list of anything and everything going on in this community.

NJA Cares, the community outreach and charitable arm of the Nevada Justice Association, a statewide non-profit organization of independent lawyers, has partnered with Toys for Tots to ensure families in need have a warm and happy holiday with their children. New, unwrapped toys are being collected through Dec. 12, 2014, and the public is encouraged to participate.

Here in Carson City, the Nevada Day Parade is a great event, rain or shine, snow, wind, or likely a combination of it all. This year, we are expecting a cold one. Have no fear, however, there will be plenty of places to grab some grub, coffee, hot chocolate, bloody marys, or shelter from the rain while you watch the balloons lift off at 8 a.m. or wait for the 10 a.m. parade.
