You’ll find all the colors of the rainbow, plus great music and fun times, at the Festival of Unity and Community: Sassabration. Get your grub on at the annual Nevada Honor Flight Chili Cook-off at Glen Eagles, and make sure to check out the craft vendors. CARSON CITY — When American troops hit the battlefields of Europe 100 years ago, they had to learn how to fight a new kind of war. From trench warfare to technical advances in weaponry, this was much different fighting than Americans had experienced before.

She’s a grand ole flag, and there will be two ceremonies to recognize the stars and stripes in Carson City today. At 10 a.m. you can join the Nevada National Guard at the Veterans Memorial on the Capitol Grounds for presentation of the colors, speakers, and even cake for the US Army’s anniversary. You’ll find the Elks Club honoring our flag at 3 p.m. The public are invited to both events. The Army isn’t the only birthday you’ll find today; Artsy Fartsy Art Gallery celebrates its seventh year with an artist reception and new work from Denise Jenkins.

Record number of homeless Carson City children fill shopping carts at 14th Holiday With a Hero

The 14th annual Holiday With a Hero campaign culminated Wednesday in Carson City at Walmart after months of fundraising. At least 240 homeless children from across the Carson City School District met with Santa Claus before being paired with first responder heroes for a Christmas shopping spree.

Santa comes in all shapes, sizes, and apparently, vehicles. Hop aboard the Santa Train at the Nevada Railroad Museum. It’s an out-of-this-world Alien Santa at the annual Zen Christmas at A to Zen. A cookie-loving Santa can be found at Adele’s during their annual toy drive for the Ron Wood Resource Center. If your ‘kids’ are the four-legged kind, then head over to PetSmart or Paws to Pur-fection Dog Grooming for your holiday photos. In addition to the Santa-mania, you’ll find a downtown Carson Beer Crawl, two plays at the Brewery Arts Center, and plenty of music.

National Wreaths Across America Day comes to Carson City's Lone Mountain Cemetery

Wreath's Across America is coming to Carson City's Lone Mountain Cemetery thanks to the Carson City Squadron of the Civil Air Patrol which is organizing the event locally. Each December, the national non-profit organization coordinates wreath-laying ceremonies at Arlington National Cemetery, as well as more than 1,200 locations across the U.S., at sea and abroad.

Nevada Guardsman among the victims of the Las Vegas country concert shootings

A Nevada Army National Guard sergeant first class was among the fatalities at the Route 91 Harvest concert late Sunday evening, Oct. 1, 2017. Sgt. 1st Class Charleston Hartfield, 34, a Soldier in the 100th Quartermaster Company headquartered in Las Vegas, was attending the concert when he was shot and killed.

Sandoval Signs More Bills into Law Including Some Supplemental Appropriation Measures

Nevada Gov. Brian Sandoval signed several bills into law Tuesday and vetoed four. Additionally on Monday, he approved four veteran and military related measures at a Memorial Day ceremony in Boulder City.

Nevada National Guard drill weekend in north state postponed

UPDATE: A press release Thursday stated that the Nevada National Guard postponed drill because of anticipated severe inclement weather. Only Nevada Army Guard units will postpone drill this month. The 152nd Airlift Wing of the Nevada Air Guard will conduct monthly drill as scheduled.

CARSON CITY — The Nevada National Guard drill set for all northern Nevada armories, bases and facilities Saturday and Sunday Jan. 7-8 is postponed and will be rescheduled due to anticipated severe inclement weather.

Nevada Agencies Participate in Emergency Disaster Exercise

The Nevada National Guard is joining forces with several state and federal agencies for a mock disaster drill. Vigilant Guard '17 is the name of the exercise. It started Thursday, with a mock earthquake in Las Vegas. The magnitude 7.2 was followed up with a magnitude 7.8 in Los Angeles, Monday.
