Sculptor Pasha Rafat to speak at Nevada Arts Council OXS reception May 11

Light sculptures and constructions by Las Vegas artist Pasha Rafat will illuminate the Office eXhibition Series Gallery May 11 to July 10. A recipient of a Nevada Arts Council 2015 Artist Fellowship Grant, Rafat holds a bachelor of science in design from Arizona State University and a Master of Fine arts from California State University, Fullerton. He is a professor at University pf Nevada, Las Vegas where he teaches photography and multimedia courses. The public is invited to an exhibit reception from 5 to 7:30 p.m.

The Capital City Arts Initiative announces its exhibition, The Driest State: Nevada Watersheds, by artist Nolan Preece at the CCAI Courthouse Gallery now through May 28, 2015. The Courthouse is located at 885 E Musser Street, Carson City. The exhibition is free and the public is cordially invited. The gallery is open to the public Monday – Friday, 8am – 5pm.

Bringing the World to Northern Nevada

On Tuesday, March 31, 2015, the Capital City Arts Initiative will present a talk by curator JoAnne Northrup. Her illustrated talk, Bringing the World to Northern Nevada is the next in CCAI’s Nevada Neighbors series. The talk will take place at 7pm at the BRIC, 108 E Proctor St, Carson City.

There will be an informal reception for Ms. Northrup preceding the event; the doors open at 6:15pm. The presentation and reception are free, and the public is cordially invited.

The Magic of Masks with Michelle Lassaline, at Legislature Feb. 24

Carson City native Michelle Lassaline is featured in a special SENarts event at the Nevada Legislature from 3:30 to 5 p.m. Tuesday, Feb. 24. Lassaline invites the public to meet and interact with some of her fanciful characters, including the Highland Cow, Pashmina Goat, Mountain Bluebird, and Wild Burro. Her presentation is part of “The Work of Artists,” a series of programs scheduled throughout the legislative session. Admission is free.

Senator Square: Calling all Carson High School Alumni

For the last six years, Carson High School has held an alumni night at the Carson-Douglas basketball game in which alumni are recognized and celebrated. It’s a chance for alumni to come back and visit the old stomping grounds, support the Senators and a chance for us to celebrate contributions and the lives of CHS alumni. The Alumni games will be held February 13 against Douglas Tigers.

Some of Northern Nevada's finest traditional, folk and contemporary artists will appear at the 2015 Nevada State Legislature in “The Work of Artists,” a series of interactive talks and demonstrations that bring a personal side to exhibited pieces. Designed to create an opportunity for artists to engage with community members and people working in or visiting the Nevada State Legislative Building, the presentations are at 3:30 p.m. Feb. 18 and 24, March 19 and 30, April 17 and May 7. All are free and open to the public in Room 3100.

The Reader’s Theater small group from the United Methodist Church will present “Call to Freedom” at the November 2 church services with selected readings prompted by President Lincoln’s Emancipation Proclamation of 1863 as Commander-in Chief of the Army and Navy of the United States.

Carson City scavenger hunt celebrates historic Nevada preservation and archaeology

Since the early 1980s, May has been a month for celebrating historic preservation and archaeology in Nevada. To kick off the celebration, there will be a monthlong Historic Resources Commission Scavenger Hunt in Carson City and other events around northern Nevada.

Organizations and agencies have maintained a long tradition to promote history and spread awareness of archaeological and historic preservation efforts throughout the state, encouraging both residents and visitors to explore and learn about Nevada’s significant archaeological and historical treasures.

Western Nevada College photo exhibition define humanity, innocence, hope

A compelling and poignant photography exhibition is showing in the galleries of Western Nevada College in Carson City. Reno-based artists Jeff Ross and Susan Mantle share their photography through Friday, Oct. 18.

In the Main Gallery, Ross invites visitors to contemplate "The Faces of St. Vincent’s," photographs and reflections of people in poverty who are being helped through St. Vincent’s Catholic Charities program.

Nick Larsen's 'Thick Dreams' presented by Nevada Arts Council

Great Basin Work

The twisted and weathered woods of the Great Basin environment become imaginative and sometimes whimsical works of art in a new exhibit at the Western Nevada College Main Gallery.
Sculptor Larry Williamson exhibits his "Great Basin Work," Monday, Feb. 14-Friday, March 25, with a free, public reception on Wednesday, Feb. 16, 5-6:30 p.m.

Williamson's carved creations are fabrications of his mind and his materials - aged pieces of wood found on the floor of the Great Basin. What transpires is an imaginative recount of the landscape that has surrounded him most of his life.

Sculptor Mischell Riley Donates Sculptures to Dayton School Garden

Dayton Intermediate School’s newly developing school garden will boast two large sculptures by internationally known sculptor Mischell Riley.

Riley, who is well known for work such as the 3-story high bronze lion at the MGM Grand Hotel and Casino in Las Vegas, has donated two of her pieces to enhance the school’s garden landscape.

Burning Man kicks in with cash

Some good news from the Burning Man folks. Maybe some critics swill have second thoughts. Black Rock City, LLC, the organization that hosts the annual Burning Man event, has announced it will donate $97,200 in proceeds from ice sales at the 2010 event to various charitable, art and service organizations in Northern Nevada.
