More beautiful weather is on its way. If I seem a little excited about a little bit of sunshine, its because I am, especially after this very long, gray, wet winter. Today we celebrate the Arts in Nevada at the Legislature and salute the painters, potters, makers, sculptors, singers, dancers, actors, writers, poets, and musicians that capture all that is Nevada in their work.

Happy Tuesday, Carson City. The valley is abuzz in blooming flowers and happenings. Tag along with one of the guided planned walks today; the afternoon one will prove more challenging, but perfect for getting ready for summer. The Carson City Classic Cinema Club showcases a different film each month: catch Bette Davis in ‘Of Human Bondage’ tonight at the BAC’s Performance Hall. May is a month to celebrate historic preservation and archaeology in Nevada.

Nevada agencies and organizations have worked to spread awareness of archaeological and historic preservation efforts throughout the state, encouraging both residents and visitors to explore and learn about Nevada’s significant archaeological and historical treasures.

As the week rolls along, it’s easy to get excited about the weekend. Genoa’s Cowboy Festival takes over the tiny town with music, poetry, artisans, food, and fun and the Comstock hills will roar to life with motorbikes during the annual Virginia City Grand Prix. While you’re waiting, enjoy a jaunt with Muscle Powered along the Carson River or take an Easy Walk to the Pioneer Cemetery. Tonight, songstress Canyon White will take the stage at Living the Good Life.

TUESDAY:

The Brewery Arts Center in Carson City will feature “Burning”, a one woman show this weekend for Earth Day. Burning is a highly kinetic, semi-comic romp through the absurd landscapes of climate change where comedy, tragedy, activism and cautious optimism collide.

The Carson Visitor’s Center has put together a great art walk pamphlet that helps you explore our downtown culture. The Legislature is home to a few rotating galleries; you’ll find lots of local art at the Brewery Arts Center; and Capital City Arts Initiative sponsors shows at the Courthouse, Community Center and in the Community Development building by City Hall. Whether you prefer indoors or outdoors activities, today has something to offer.

A retired park ranger, Pete Gill now spends his days driving the Bookmobile, delivering library books around Lincoln County. He spends the bulk of his time at elementary schools in Panaca, Pioche and Client.

Future Perfect, a film production company with a studio in Carson City, has made a major feature length documentary about the effects of climate change on children. AND THEN THE CLIMATE CHANGED explores the many ways in which the message of climate change and its frightening consequences can be communicated. One way is through performance.

Spring is what you make of it. It’s not going to be that warm today, but it’ll be dry, so embrace the day. Tuesdays are for hiking and biking in Carson. The morning easy walk will take you from Mills Park to the Capitol and the afternoon conditioning hike will give you well-deserved views from C-Hill. Now that we’ve warmed up some, the Tuesday evening ladies’ ride in Ash Canyon has started up again: don’t forget your helmet. Congratulations to Mile High Jazz Band for 16 years of monthly concerts at Comma Coffee. Enjoy a night of great music, yummy drinks, and a birthday cake to celebrate.

You’ll want to read today’s list, fun stuff all over and something for everyone. Psst… Daytonites… Your kids are on spring break right now, and Carson has some great ways to keep them entertained. Younger ones will enjoy a trip to the Children’s Museum of Northern Nevada; Tuesdays feature a story and craft activity that’s included with admission. A quick trip to the Galaxy Theater website gets you a rewards card good for Tuesday discount tickets. The Deputy Howell Memorial Musical Festival is holding a volunteer organization meeting tonight at Battle Born Harley.

It seems like overnight the crabapples have exploded into bloom. Take advantage of a beautiful day by joining one of the walks organized every Tuesday. An easy walk with Parks and Rec will take you along a portion of the Mexican Ditch Trail today. The Muscle Powered walk in early evening is more strenuous. Fathers will want to get moving if they plan on taking their daughter to the Carson High Father Daughter Dance this Friday. Swing by the High School office between 2 p.m. and 4 p.m. for tickets or shoot an email to teacher Angila Golek to make sure they’re waiting at will call.

I hope everyone enjoyed the sunshine while it was here, more rain is on the way. Take those spring-breakers to a movie; Galaxy Theater rewards members can enjoy $6.50 movies all day today. Sip something yummy at the Courtyard by Marriott during their wine tasting and open house. Normally the Carson City Photo Club meets on the fourth Tuesday of the month, but due to a scheduling conflict, the meeting is tonight. Dues are only $15 a year and you’ll get the chance to enter their monthly competitions: this month the theme is ‘Winter.’

Let's celebrate 'pi day' with some jazz and poetry dedicated to math and baked goods with the Mile High Jazz Band at Comma Coffee tonight. It’s a blast from the past today. Longtime locals remember the Penguin quite fondly. The folks at Westside Pour House have been entrusted with their taco recipe and will be serving them up today. Continue your trip to yesteryear with the Carson City Classic Cinema Club. Capital City Arts Initiative welcomes art writer, Chérie Louise Turner to their Nevada Neighbors program. Today we say farewell to February. I’m chomping at the bit for spring and Mardi Gras means it’s just around the corner. The Sierra Nevada Forums return to the Brewery Arts Center with a presentation on civility in a time of political differences. The Carson City Photography Club is welcoming new members: every month you’ll find a different assignment. Those in the nursing field will want to attend the RN Job Fair at Carson Tahoe Hospital for new opportunities.

On February 13, through CHS’ leadership class led by teacher and advisor Ann Britt, we had the privilege of having students from Efterskolen Frydensberg, a Danish boarding school, come to CHS as a part of an annual 10th grade trip to America.

Fingers crossed, we’ve got a few days without the wet stuff. This winter seems like the song that never ends. We received late word that Saturday's monthly Trash Mob has been canceled. The good news is there's a day-long music fest at the Carson Colony Gym on South Curry is fundraising for the DAPL Water Protectors. Music, art, cinema, comedy and more are on tap for this weekend. Take a look for all of your options.

SATURDAY:

Windy, rainy days are excellent for watching movies. Luckily, the International Film Weekend kicks off today with Chinese film, ‘Wolf Totem,’ in the Community Center Theater. Show up at 3 p.m. if you want to be wowed by some independent films from students at the UNR Reynolds School of Journalism.

The fourth annual International Film Weekend on Feb. 16-18 in Carson City will feature three full-length movies, along with several short independent films.

Lots of love to you, Carson City, and happy Valentine’s Day. Show some love to Food for Thought today by getting a yummy drink at Dutch Brothers Coffee. The Legislature celebrates the Nevada Tribes with a tour of Stewart Indian School and a lunch-time presentation. Dance to the music of Deep Groove at Sierra Place Senior Living. Let Ev Musselman romance you at Valentine’s Day ‘Cigar Bar Style’ as he channels his inner lounge singer, ‘Cheese the Knife.’ Valentine’s Day with the Mile High Jazz Band means a Jazz Sampler for Sweethearts at Comma Coffee.

It’s going to be a great Tuesday, Carson City. Parks and Recreation sponsors their weekly ‘Easy Walk’ along Kings Canyon Trail. Although, if the rain continues to fall, the walk will take place at our new Multi-Purpose Athletic Center. Capital City Art Initiative celebrates the artists of Western Nevada College this evening, and then welcomes Phyllis Shafer for an illustrated discussion of her work. The Carson City Classic Cinema Club shows off a young Elizabeth Taylor tonight in the 1954 romantic drama ‘The Last Time I Saw Paris.’

It’s not exactly warm outside, but compared to some of the bitter cold we’ve had this month, it’s not that bad. Take advantage of the dry weather by joining in on the Parks and Recreation Easy Walk in John Mankins Park in Silver Oak. It’s a Jazz Extravaganza at the Community Center tonight. Mile High Jazz Band has teamed up with the Carson High and Carson Middle School jazz bands for their annual concert. The monthly fundraiser at Firehouse Subs makes raising money for Relay for Life as easy as ordering dinner.

It’s hard not to notice the beauty around Carson City: the mountains, the historic buildings and our Capitol, the people. We have several talented artists and photographers that capture our valley in the best light. Carson City is running a photography contest for snowy pictures of our valley, go HERE for more information.

Enjoy the sunshine while we’ve got it. More rain and snow is just around the corner, so if you think you’ll need sandbags, grab them now. The Carson Animal Shelter Initiative (CASI) meets monthly and is always looking for more people to get involved: join them at the new Animal Shelter. Award-winning Canyon White returns to Living the Good Life for an acoustic set. Chili’s restaurant is hosting a fundraiser for Eagle Valley Middle School: helping out is as simple as buying dinner.

After a brief pause in the rain yesterday, the storm has returned. I write this list with trepidation, as localized flooding is still affecting homes and businesses around town. Everything on this list is subject to cancellation. It’s back to school for the kids of Lyon County and Carson. Jacks Valley Elementary is closed, but all other Minden/Gardnerville students are headed back. Stay safe out there, and thank you to all the city and state staff, volunteers, and good neighbors that are working hard to keep the damage to a minimum.

Let it snow, let it snow, let it snow. Snowy days make the perfect backdrop for a day curled up with a book. If you’re participating in the Library Winter Read-athon, tear yourself away from your cozy spot and go log in your hours this afternoon.

Carson City Library patrons can now check out digital copies of movies though the OverDrive system available to card holders.

“We’ve been using the OverDrive platform for about five years for e-books and e-audiobooks,” said Amy Lauder, collection development manager. “We’ve just now added streaming video.”

When it comes to history, the west side of Carson City gets most the attention. Learn what makes the east side unique on the Parks and Recreation Easy Walk at 9 a.m. Galaxy Theater offers a special movie rate on Tuesdays if you’ve got a rewards card: grab the kids and take in a winter break movie. The Old Corner Bar in Minden welcomes the return of the Flash Jam, so grab your instrument and get your groove on.

It’s looking like we may be in store for a white Christmas this year, but anything could happen in the next few days.
