National Pancake Day at IHOP means a free short stack; but they are hoping you’ll donate to the Children’s Miracle Network. Jazz and Poetry take over Comma Coffee this evening; the Mile High Jazz Band can be found there every second Tuesday all year long. Get your fro-yo fix at Yogurt Beach and help raise funds for the annual Relay for Life fundraiser. A great panel of women will be at the Dayton Community Center this evening to share their experiences growing up on the Comstock.

This evening, take your sweetheart to Comma Coffee for some warm drinks and cool jazz. Learn about smart cities at the Brewery Arts Center; the Sierra Nevada Forums have a great line-up of speakers. Take a spin around the dance floor at El Charro Avita or at Carson Lanes. Swing dance lessons and country dance lessons are available each Tuesday.

The jazzier ones will be performing at the Community Center tonight with the Mile High Jazz Band in an extravaganza of music. Enjoy some of our valley’s views with the Parks and Rec Easy Walk along the freeway multi-use path. Dinner plans are easy; Mystique is holding a grand opening tonight downtown, so go see what deliciousness they have to offer.

The weekly walk, sponsored by the Parks and Recreation Department, heads to the new MAC center in case of wet weather. Learn more about this crazy weather at Sierra Place Senior Living with a presentation by weather historian Mark McLaughlin. Don't miss the Mile High Jazz Band at Comma Coffee tonight. History lovers will want to head up to Virginia City for a lecture at St. Mary's of the Mountain Catholic Church.

Mile High Jazz Band Presents Autumn Jazz With Singers Jakki Ford and June Joplin
Submitted by editor on Sat, 09/19/2015 - 12:41pmAs the days grow short, the Mile High Jazz Band is preparing "Autumn Jazz," a program of big-band music with vocalists Jakki Ford and June Joplin, on Tuesday, October 13, from 7:30 to 9:30 p.m. at Comma Coffee, 312 S. Carson Street. General admission is $5 at the door; free for age 18 and under.
Among the tunes planned for the program are "Early Autumn," as a nod to the fall season; "Sweet Georgia Brown," long associated with basketball's Harlem Globetrotters; "The Heat's On"; and "Whodunnit?," the band's tribute to Halloween.

Weather is heating back up, so at least it won’t feel like autumn, just yet. If you want to break out of your routine, try swing dancing. Beginners lessons are taught on Tuesdays at El Charro Avita. If country is more your thing, Carson Lanes offers lessons on Tuesdays and Wednesdays. Jazz and Poetry at Comma Coffee with the Mile High Jazz Band is sure to be a good time.

Each poem will be followed by a related big-band tune. The event will be at Comma Coffee, 312 S. Carson Street, across the street from the state legislature building in Carson City, outdoors in the adjacent courtyard, weather permitting. Admission is $5 general and free for age 18 and under.

The main, special event is the Count Basie 111th Birthday Bash, 8 to 10 p.m., on the Third Street Stage between Carson and Curry Streets in Carson City.
The Music Festival began in 2004 to commemorate the 100th anniversary of the birth of William "Count" Basie, Aug. 21, 1904-April 26, 1984.

The annual Jazz and Beyond Festival is heading into its final weekend, and as always, going out in style. Tonight, celebrate Count Basie’s 111th birthday with the Mile High Jazz Band downtown on Third Street. Carson Tahoe Medical Center is holding its 5th annual HopeFest concert headlined by the Young Dubliners. Carson's own, Molly Seals, will be performing, as well.

Jazz and Beyond Carson City Music Festival to feature Motown events

First is a free lecture-demonstration by musician-educator John Shipley. It will feature music, visuals, a guitar raffle, a no-host bar, and a guest appearance by Lloyd Williams of Otis Day and the Knights on Monday, August 17, at the Brewery Arts Center.
The second part of the Motown special is a ticketed concert showcasing Williams, the original singing voice from the hit movie Animal House, on Tuesday, August 18, 7 p.m., at the Carson City Community Center, 851 E. William Street in Carson City.
Millennium Bugs Jazz Combo plays Artown Wednesday in Reno
Submitted by Jeff Munson on Fri, 07/17/2015 - 7:12amThe Millennium Bugs, a five-piece combo affiliated with the Mile High Jazz Band, will play traditional jazz in an Artown concert on Wednesday, July 22, 7:00 to 9:00 p.m., inside St. James Infirmary in Reno. The venue, a casual spot with a vintage feel, serves eclectic mixed drinks and beer inside and on the rooftop deck. Admission is free.
Band members are Dan Lancaster on saxes, clarinet, and flute; Gil Linsley on trumpet and flugelhorn; David Bugli on keyboard and trombone; George Worth on bass and trombone; and Hal Little on drums.

Enjoy Christmas in July with the Friends of the Carson Library’s Food Drive. A non-perishable food donation gets you a Christmas book and a coupon for a dollar off at Browser’s Corner Book Store. Make sure to get your pizza fix at Pizza Factory on Highway 50. It’s Pop Warner Day, so any purchase will send a few dollars to the boys and girls involved in the program.
