Living in Northern Nevada over this past month, we’ve been the sad witnesses to how tragedy can affect the lives of so many. The horrible shooting at the Carson IHOP that left 4 dead and injured 7, followed by the fatal accident at the air races that took the lives of 11 people and injured more than 70, is a sad and real reminder of how short our time on this earth can be. Left behind are spouses, children, grandchildren and other friends. Along with the unexpected death of their loved one, often comes with a loss of income and other unexpected expenses.

Dr. Sue Fawn Chung, the leading authority on the history of the Chinese in Nevada, presents a lecture on her new book of the same title, Thursday, September 22 at the Nevada State Museum. Dr. Chung will be available at 6:00 pm to sign her book, The Chinese in Nevada, recently published by Arcadia; the lecture will begin at 7:00 pm. The Chinese in Nevada boasts more than 200 vintage images and memories of days gone by. Professor Chung has been teaching at the University of Nevada, Las Vegas, since 1975.

The fish Curtis caught is a new Utah state record—it's the largest cutthroat trout ever caught and released in Utah.

Curtis caught the 31½-inch "cruiser cut" at the reservoir in northern Utah using a handmade marabou jig.

We lived in Kiev, Ukraine, about an hour away from Chernobyl, when it happened. I was 22, married, on maternity leave taking care of our 15-month-old son Danny. We knew about the accident that day, but were not sure how bad it was, and what it really meant for us.

The partisan sniping comes as legislators are scrambling to save their bills from extinction of bills as a legislative deadline looms.

Join RSVP (the Retired and Senior Volunteer Program) in the first of three of its major carnival and fair fundraisers of the year beginning Thursday May 5 through Sunday May 8 at at Mills Park. The annual Mother's Day Spring Fair features major carnival rides, games, concessions arts, crafts, novelties and lots of food. And as what has become customary, Mom's get to ride all the carnival rides for free on Sunday, Mother's Day.

North Platte, Nebraska is just west of the North Platte and South Platte rivers confluence forming the Platte. North Platte was formed in 1866 with the construction of the continental railroad. In 1941 the population was 12,000.

A couple of weeks after the bombing of Pearl Harbor, the women of North Platte heard a troop train with Nebraska National Guard troops would be passing through town. Several of the women decided to bake cookies to give to “our boys” when the train stopped for 10 minutes.

The “S” Club of Dayton High School is sponsoring a project to help make this year’s Prom a dream come true.

The 2011 season for the Virginia & Truckee Railroad is rolling down the track to opening weekend, May 27 through May 29 in Carson City, according to Convention and Visitors Bureau officials.

Before the official opening weekend, the railroad is offering a sneak peek into the historic route with a special event on Mother’s Day, Sun., May 8.

Seven fun-loving people from this area spent last Saturday and Sunday, February 12-13, traveling on the Amtrak passenger train between Reno and Sacramento, Calif.

Those seven were: Mary Bottoms, Bob “Slick” and Lynda McCulloch, Elaine and I, all of Carson City; and Sal and Catali Quilici of Dayton.

An art exhibit that explores an observation made in author Barbara Kingsolver's book, "Animal Dreams: Memory is a complicated thing, a relative to truth, but not its twin" is featured at Western Nevada College.
The public is invited to meet the artists at a reception, Wednesday, Feb. 16, 5-6:30 p.m. in the WNC Carson City galleries.

Valentine’s Day in Carson City transforms into a week-long display of affection with candlelit dining options, special events, theatre performances and lodging specials, Feb. 12 – 19.

The Pinkerton Ballet Theater turns the classic holiday ballet "The Nutcracker" into a chance for some political types to take part at 7 p.m. Friday and Saturday and 2 p.m. on Sunday at the Carson Community Center, 851 E. The political figures involved are Carson Mayor Bob Crowell, State Senator Mark Amodei and City Assessor Dave Dawley. Crowell appears Friday, Dawley on Saturday and Amodei Sunday. And the entire cast is local in desire if not actuality.

Dayton Valley Days Committee is welcoming entries to both the general parade on Saturday, September 18, and to the Pet Parade on Sunday, September 19, 2010. This year’s parade will feature retired Nevada State Archivist Guy Rocha and well-known Dayton Valley rancher Kay Winters as Grand Marshals. Memories from the past and enthusiasm for the coming season will be topics of conversation on Saturday night, Aug. 14, when the Carson High School Football Boosters Club holds its annual Kickoff Dinner, hosted by Mo & Sluggo's in Carson City.

Pianist Dr. Ron Williams performed the 50th Anniversary Recital of Toccatas and Sonatas Thursday night at the Brewery Arts Center Performance Hall.

The event was put on as a fundraiser for Carson City Symphony’s String for the School Program. More than fifty people attended, ranging from children to seniors.

The Recital featured songs written and originally played by J.S. Bach, D. Scarlatti, Paradisi, Haydn, Schumann, Beethoven and Ravel.

Williams was accompanied by his wife Genevieve Williams, who also assisted him while he was performing.
