Although the fall semester has begun at Western Nevada College, many noncredit educational and self-improvement classes are still available through WNC Continuing Education.

Class offerings range from learning the Washoe language to Tai Chi, to accounting methods designed for small business owners.

This weekend, I attended the final Levitt AMP concert for the summer at the Brewery Arts Center. Boy, was it fun! But, it also sparked a few connections for me which will result in business meetings this week. This, to me, is networking.

Living in the dusty, dry high desert means that we escape cancerous car rot. Additionally, it’s probably the reason that Northern Nevada is a mecca for classic cars and the shows that celebrate them. The Silver Dollar Classic Car Show has long been Carson’s kick off to the hot, melty August nights that follow – the Max Casino is where it all begins. Head to Red’s Old 395 for an appreciation party to those who fight our wild fires and say a hello to Smokey the Bear. Trey Stone makes an appearance at Living the Good Life and Whiskey Tavern welcomes you to their karaoke stage.

A large crowd gathers Thursday for the final reception of the Always Lost: A Meditation on War exhibit at Western Nevada College in Carson City. The event was also held as a celebration of life for exhibit co-founder Marilee Swirczek, who died July 17.
The photo exhibit, which opened at WNC in 2009, memorializes the sacrifices of U.S. military veterans and their families.

Summer is in full blaze out there. Treat yourself to something cold at Dairy Queen; their Miracle Treat Day donates a dollar per Blizzard to the Miracle Children’s Hospitals. See what the talented kids of Strings in the Schools have been up to this summer at their free concert inside the Carson Mall. ‘Always Lost: A Meditation on War’ is an art exhibit from Western Nevada College that has travelled the country.

Happy Wednesday, Carson City. Enjoy America’s pastime tonight at the Aces Stadium and help raise money for the Carson City Library; just pick up your ticket voucher at Browser’s Corner Book Store. Casino Fandango is airing the 1968 classic, Planet of the Apes, today at 2 p.m. and 7 p.m. Kick off a weekend full of classic cars with Cruise Night at the Carson Mall with food trucks, kids activities, and more. Westside Pour House is the new home of the weekly ‘Geeks Who Drink’ Pub Quiz, so gather your smartest friends for a fun night of trivia, libations, and good food.

Happy Tuesday, Carson City. Today’s happenings include country line dancing at Carson Lanes and swing dance at El Charro Avita. Take a walk with Carson Parks and Recreation along the Carson River by Morgan Mill. Dinner at Firehouse Subs tonight will help raise money for the Carson City Relay for Life. Ladies may want to join in on the Muscle Powered Bike Ride to Ash Canyon. London artist, Stewart Easton hosts an embroidery workshop at the Silver City Schoolhouse. Get thee to a gallery! Carson City has three art exhibits in their last week of viewing: the Spirit of America Show at the Nevada Artist Association Gallery, ‘Vantage Point of Distance’ by Dave Rowe at the Nevada Arts Council’s OXS Gallery, and ‘Always Lost: A Meditation on War’ on display in the Western Nevada College Gallery. This week will also see receptions for two of those exhibits. The Nevada Arts Council welcomes Dave Rowe on Tuesday.

I really hope I’m not required to choose a favorite event. I would be hard pressed to choose between the Nevada Day Parade and the annual Taste of Downtown. Luckily, I can adore them both, and for much the same reason. They are a celebration of community, of Carson City, of our historic downtown and all that it has to offer. In addition to 'The Taste', the Brewery Arts Center goes country with the Southern Drawl Band on its outdoor stage, and Madam Curry leads another downtown Ghost Walk. I'm chomping at the bit for Saturday: the Taste of Downtown is almost here. It is one of my absolute favorite events, and one of the most delicious. Grab your tickets at Classy Seconds Thrift Store or the Purple Avocado. A jazz jam with Tom Stryker at Living the Good Life is a great way to soothe the soul.

I am quite fond of Tuesdays. For a weekday, they usually have some great offerings. Today's Easy Walk with the Parks and Recreation Department takes you along the Moffat Open Space on the east side of town. The Children's Museum of Northern Nevada offers 'Books and Brags', essentially a story with craft time. Have a hot time with the fire-dancers of Controlled Burn: they meet at A to Zen on Tuesdays and welcome newcomers.

Marilee Swirczek, a writer, professor of English, faculty member at Western Nevada College, and a driving force behind the highly acclaimed “Always Lost: A Meditation on War” photo exhibition, died Sunday.

Swirczek was project director for the “Always Lost: A Meditation on War” exhibition that originated in her creative writing class. The exhibition received nationwide recognition, with a national tour that began in 2010 and ends this July 29, 2016. Marilee was a former Carson City Supervisor from 1987 to 1989 and wife of Ron Swirczek, a member of the Carson City School Board. She was 68.

THURSDAY:

It’s going to be a beautiful, sunshiny day in Carson City. After a couple of cool, breezy days, the temperatures are returning to the 90s. If this is a beach day, consider sticking around for the Pints and Paddles Cruise on the MS Dixie in Zephyr Cove. Head downtown for some yummy goodness; today’s Farmers Market runs from 4 p.m. until 8 p.m. Living the Good Life welcomes Rocky and Judith to the stage. Crossroads Lounge is the place to be for all you karaoke lovers out there.

The Carson Library is offering a craft project this afternoon, and 'What's Up in your Community' this evening, so it's not a bad place to park yourself for the day and beat the heat. We made it, Carson City. Friday has arrived and the weekend is moments away. The annual Chili Cook-off at Glen Eagles, the last few performances of Aladdin, Jr., and the all new Polynesian Festival are just about here. Tonight you’ll want to enjoy CV-41 at Living the Good Life: just the first of their outdoor summer shows. Local legend, Unkle Funkle, is hitting the stage at the Carson Nugget. Get your reggae fix at the Westside Pour House when Whiskey Lung starts jamming. Join Mike Thompson at the Plaza Hotel: the Roswell Incident is the subject of tonight’s lecture.

The great day about three-day weekends is how quickly the next weekend appears. Thursday in Carson City offers fun stuff like live music at Living the Good Life and Sassafras, karaoke at Jimmy G’s Cigar Bar, and the Silver Dollar Classic Car Cruise night. Monty Python lovers should audition for ‘Spamalot’ at the Brewery Arts Center. The Novelists make an appearance at the Dangberg Home Ranch Historical Park as part of their Twilight Concert series; you’ll want to bring a chair or blanket. Don’t miss your last chance to see the CCAI exhibit by Nancy Raven at the BRIC.

Downtown is in a for a new building; Hop and Mae Adams Foundation breaks ground at Curry and Telegraph this morning. Yummy stuff awaits at the Wednesday Farmers Market.
