JoAnne Skelly: Overrun with Ground Squirrels

Those pesky ground squirrels are out in force these days. I think they are on their second or third series of babies. I can tolerate them out in our field. However, when they dig under the house, it’s time to get serious about control, before they undermine the foundation.

Volunteers' Smiles Help Bring Fair to Life

Last year volunteers for the Nevada Fair gave 611 hours in celebration of Nevada’s 150th birthday to help bring back a tradition.

The Nevada State Fair began in 1874 and was Nevada’s longest running event until 2010 when it ceased after fundraising efforts ran short. The closure ended a 136-year tradition that was re-established with last year’s event.

Preparations underway for Nevada Fair

Those interested in entering the livestock and other competitions in this summer's Nevada Fair in Carson City may now do so at nevadafair.com, organizers said. The premium book is open for entries in the livestock shows as well as other competitions, including home arts, cooking, homespun items and sewing.

Nevada Agriculture officials address wild horse gatherings

Concerned about the recent uptick in wild horses in and around the Virginia Range south of Reno, state agriculture officials say they want the horses to remain in the wild as long as they aren't presenting a public risk. If there are problems, officials say they will gather the horses for adoption.

In a released statement, the Nevada Department of Agriculture says it receives complaints almost daily about horses in neighborhoods in and around the Virginia Range.

Mountain Biking to Virginia City

Now that Autumn has arrived, it’s a great time to explore the areas east of Carson City. These trails and back roads can be impassable in the winter, muddy in the Spring, and too hot during the Summer. This time of year, though, the dry conditions and mild temperatures make it the perfect time to go. One of our favorite Fall rides is the off-road route up to Virginia City via the American Flat Toll Road. With the area’s fun and lively Old West history, this ride has started to become an annual event.

Nevada wildlife wardens respond to 20 bear calls in July

The month of July ended with the Nevada Department of Wildlife dealing with 20 black bears in the 31 days.

“That is a faster than normal pace,” says NDOW biologist Carl Lackey, “but it is really the calm before the storm with potential nuisance bear activity in western Nevada. This is the time of year that the bears expand their search for food and during that search bears and the activities of people often come in to conflict. August, September and October should be very busy with our bears.”
