Action Adventure Expo

The Action Adventure Expo will be held May 16 and 17, 2014, in the Pavilion at the Douglas County Fairgrounds in Gardnerville.

Carson City health educator applauds decision by CVS to end sale of smokes, tobacco products

CVS announced Wednesday that it will stop selling cigarettes and other tobacco products at its more than 7,600 pharmacies across the U.S. by Oct. 1, 2014, making CVS the first national pharmacy chain to take this step in support of the health and well-being of its patients and customers. There are three CVS pharmacies in Carson City.

Man jailed for DUI and drug charges says he was on Vicodin but not drinking

A 30-year-old Carson City man, arrested on suspicion of DUI early Friday morning, also faces a felony charge of being in possession of a controlled substance and a gross misdemeanor charge of being in possession of a dangerous drug.

Carson City sheriff's patrol officers stopped Lauffette Kimmins Jr. for speeding, doing 44 mph in a 25 mph zone. The man showed signs of intoxication and admitted to taking Vicodin pills but denied drinking any alcoholic beverages. When officers spoke with the man, they could smell alcohol on his breath, the arrest report states.

This ambition was sparked by an experiment in social media, using the Reverbnation.com site to introduce his recordings to a wider audience. He joined Reverbnation a little over a year ago, as an experiment, entering the Nashville Americana “chart” at No. 85. He will be appearing at Comma Coffee in Carson City July 8.

Comprehensive Immigration Reform Resolution Moves on to Congress

The Nevada Assembly voted on Senate Joint Resolution 15 during their floor session Tuesday. The bill urges Congress to enact comprehensive immigration reform.

Many of the Assembly members took time to speak to the importance of passing the bill. Assemblyman James Ohrenschall was one of those who spoke in favor of SJR 15.

“Unless you’re a Native Americans, we are a nation of immigrants,” Ohrenschall said.

Bear hunting was illegal in Nevada for 82 years until, in 2011, Governor Sandoval chose not to interfere with the Nevada Wildlife Commission’s hunting regulation.

On Mar. 7, Senator Aaron Ford patiently listened to a battle of clashing cultures when Nevadans voiced their concerns over a bill that would classify the black bear as a protected mammal, effectively prohibiting the Board of Wildlife Commissioners from authorizing the hunting of black bears.

The Anthem Blue Cross and Blue Shield Foundation announced that the Boys & Girls Clubs of Las Vegas (Las Vegas, Nev.) and Elko Boys & Girls Club (Elko, Nev.) will both receive a $10,000 start-up grant to implement Triple Play programming. Additionally, Boys & Girls Club of Truckee Meadows (Reno, Nev.) and Boys & Girls Club of Western Nevada (Carson, Nev.) will receive $5,000 Triple Play Healthy Habits grants to provide programming focused on teaching the importance of healthy eating habits and being physically active.
