The first time I had ever heard "Taps" played in person, I was visiting Arlington National Cemetery in Arlington, VA, just outside of Washington, D.C. A Navy funeral was concluding and bugler "Taps" signaled the sailor's final farewell.

Carson City Democratic luncheon on Memorial Day to feature local military historian

World War II historian and author Ken Beaton will be the featured speaker at the Carson City Democrats' Memorial Day luncheon. He will narrate a slide show of photographs taken on his visits to American memorials and military cemeteries across Europe, including some ties to his own family.

Virginia City honors American Heroes at Saturday Memorial Parade

Celebrate Memorial Day Weekend in historic Virginia City with the annual Celebration of Heroes Parade Saturday, May 23 at noon. Taking place along C Street, the parade honors the memory of those who paid the ultimate sacrifice.

Sgt. Daniel Leverne Ackerman was from Carson City, Nev. He served in Vietnam, where he made the ultimate sacrifice in combat service to the United States of America a few weeks after his 21st birthday.

Sgt. Ackerman was born on March 13, 1947, and was killed in action on April 10, 1968. On the Vietnam Memorial Wall his name is located at Panel 49E, Line 7. Sgt. Ackerman was buried at Empire Cemetery, which is just east of Carson City.

Governor unveils Nevada Fallen Heroes book on eve of Veterans Day

Nevada Gov. Brian Sandoval unveiled a living memorial Monday honoring Nevada's military men and women who made the ultimate sacrifice.

The Nevada Fallen Heroes book will be displayed in the front entrance of the Nevada State Capitol building and contains the names of every Nevadan killed in action dating back to the Civil War.

"The Nevada Fallen Heroes Book will be a living memorial. Each of these names tells a different story. Each name represent dreams deterred," said the governor in his Twitter feed. "As we reflect on the names within this book, we must endeavor to uphold the ideals for which they gave their last full measure of devotion."

Vets in Carson City gather Saturday for national Vietnam Veterans Day

More than 200 veterans from the Vietnam War gathered Saturday at the Carson Nugget to pay tribute to each other, those who died and those who remain missing in action as part of national Vietnam Veterans Day.

This year marks the 50th anniversary of the Tonkin Gulf Resolution. Many consider the resolution the official start of the Vietnam war, though many Americans were fighting and dying in Vietnam beginning in the mid 1950s. It also marks the 40th anniversary of the withdrawal of combat troops from Vietnam.

Nevadans asked to 'Never Forget' MIA/POWs at Capitol Building ceremony

Nevadans paid tribute and remembered those missing in action and prisoners of war in a ceremony Friday on the Plaza of the Nevada State Veterans Memorial.

In a ceremony officially proclaimed POW/MIA Recognition Day in Nevada by Gov. Brian Sandoval, it was noted that more than 100,000 Americans have been unaccounted for in military operations spanning from WWI to present.

Gold Star Peak dedication Sept. 6 to honor fallen South Lake Tahoe area soldiers

With the assistance of the U.S. Forest Service Lake Tahoe Basin Management Unit and a determined committee, an unnamed peak on the North Shore of the Lake Tahoe Basin has been renamed “Gold Star Peak” in honor of soldiers from the area that paid the ultimate price in Operation Iraqi Freedom, Operation Enduring Freedom, and the War on Terrorism.

A ceremony to dedicate Gold Star Peak will be held at 11 a.m. on Friday, Sept. 6, at Lakeview Commons in South Lake Tahoe.

Law Enforcement Memorial ceremony to be held May 3

The annual Law Enforcement Officers Memorial Ceremony will be held at noon May 3, 2012, at the Nevada State Capitol. The ceremony will honor the 120 peace officers who have been killed in the line of duty in Nevada.

Three officers have been killed in the line of duty over the last year: Deputy Sheriff Jack D. London, Clark County Sheriff's Office; Special Agent Don C. Ware, US DEA, Las Vegas; and Correctional Officer Tracy A. Hardin, Nevada Department of Corrections.

The Annual Nevada Law Enforcement Memorial Run will begin on April 26.
