Since opening its doors to students about four months ago, the Sierra Academy of Style (SAS) has started three class cycles and began accepting clients from the community, co-owner Anthony Gayner said.

Six students graduated May 25 from the Professional Institute of Technology and Accounting (PITA), a Las Vegas-based vocational school that recently opened its newest campus in Carson City.

Unemployed and underemployed military veterans in Northern Nevada are encouraged to take advantage of a new employment program designed to give them the edge in establishing a new career.

A job readiness seminar, hosted by the Carson City Health and Human Services (CCHHS) Workforce Program, will be held over three days next week at 900 E. Long Street in Carson City.

As many as 45 employers will take part in a job fair on Friday from 2 to 4:30 p.m. at the Carson City Community Center.
Sponsored by Carson City Health and Human Services, Job Opportunities in Nevada (JOIN), and the Carson City Chamber of Commerce the Sept. 26 fair, located in the large gym of the community center at 851 East William Street, is open to the general public and all job seekers. Veterans will be able to enter the Job Fair at 1:30 p.m. for early admission.

Carson City's unemployment rate fell slightly to 7.5 percent in August along with Nevada's overall unemployment rate which also dipped to 7.6 percent, the lowest since August 2008 and down 2.2 points from a year ago, the Nevada Department of Employment, Training and Rehabilitation reports Friday.

The event is Friday, September 26 from 2 to 4:30 p.m. for the general public. Veterans will be able to enter the Job Fair at 1:30 p.m. for early admission.

The Job Fair will be located in the large gym at the Carson City Community Center on 851 East William Street, Carson City, Nevada 89701.

A Carson City job fair held in February resulted in 43 people being hired, the city's workforce case manager reports.

"We felt it was a huge success with the 36 employers attending and 619 job seekers; this is more than 14 percent of the job seekers who became employed as a direct result of the job fair," said Lynn Ellis, WorkForce Program Case Manager for Carson City Health and Human Services.

Ellis gleaned the statistics after taking a survey of employers six week after the Feb. 22 job fair held at the Carson City Senior Center.
