Trees add significant value to a property. They provide financial benefit for resale, aesthetic value, climate control, wildlife habitat, water and soil protection and air pollution mitigation. In a drought, trees have a few adaptive defense mechanisms that help to reduce water loss. However, over extended periods of drought, tree growth and appearance can suffer and trees may die.

We prune shrubs for a number of reasons. We want to remove dead or diseased wood. We may feel the shape of the plant needs improving and choose to prune branches that cross or stick out. Another important reason to prune is to maintain or improve flower production.

Thigmomorphogenesis – When I first saw this word, I thought it was a joke; but no, it’s a real response of plants to touch. I’m not referring to the “touchy-feely” idea of hugging or caressing plants.

Think instead of the active trapping mechanism of carnivorous plants or of the leaf response of the “sensitive plant” (Mimosa species). Some vine tendrils coil up when touched. However, thigmomorphogenesis refers to “more long-term changes in the appearance of a plant (‘-morpho-‘) in response to repeated touch (“thigmo-“) (Chalker-Scott, Washington State University).

Aspiring teams of budding Carson City area filmmakers are hard at work this week developing and putting the final touches entries for the Carson Creepy Film Festival, which will be held Saturday, Oct. 25, 6 p.m. at the Brewery Arts Center.

From comedy to horror, teams were given one week to make a film within the genres of Ghost, Halloween, Monster, Psychological Thriller, Sci Fi, Spiders/Insects, Vampire, Witches, Zombie. All may lean to comedy or horror.

THE CARSON CREEPY FILM FESTIVAL--deadline to register to make a film is Monday Oct. 13.

Wired Wednesday and Carson TV present THE CARSON CREEPY FILM FESTIVAL competition in the Brewery Arts Center’s Performance Hall. To make a film and enter the competition, register by 5 pm Monday, Oct. 13. Then make your own film. The judged screening will be on Saturday Oct 25 at 6pm in the Brewery Arts Center Performance Hall. Admission to the screening is $5 per person.

The Clear Creek watershed that runs through Carson City and Douglas County and Franktown watershed at Washoe Lake are two of 10 areas within the Nevada's national forests to be picked as priority projects designed to combat damage from insects and disease that weakens forests and increases the risk of wildfire, U.S. Forest Service Chief Tom Tidwell said Wednesday.

Responding to a provision in the new Farm Bill, Nevada Gov. Brian Sandoval had asked Tidwell to designate the watersheds and eight other areas for forest health projects.

The Carson City Harvest Hub, along with food production programs in Douglas and Lyon counties, have been awarded funding through the Nevada Department of Agriculture, officials announced Monday.
