Artsy Fartsy Gallery of Carson City will have an array of Western art by local artists available. The hat will be passed and donations, which will be matched by Café at Adele’s, as well as a portion of art sales will go toward supporting wild horse rescue efforts in Northern Nevada.
Release of wild horses north of Carson City investigated by Department of Agriculture
Submitted by Jeff Munson on Fri, 01/31/2014 - 3:11pmA number of captured feral-estray wild horses from the Washoe Valley area north of Carson City were illegally released sometime Thursday or Friday prompting an investigation by the Nevada Department of Agriculture.
The Virginia Range horses were reported to be running loose Friday on Highway 395 south near Washoe Hill, said Bob Conrad, department spokesman.

Travel Channel highlights Nevada wild horse roundups in Sunday night program

He is the horse who began the controversy with all the horses rounded up in the Deer Run area of Carson City this winter and spring 2013.
The feisty youngster, fortunately, is safe now in Colorado. If you get the Travel Channel, tune in Sunday night, 10 p.m. PST. The network will be airing a segment covering wild horse round ups in Nevada.
Humboldt-Toiyabe National Forest deputy supervisor Genevieve Masters ready for new role

Masters arrived from the Apache-Sitgreaves’ National Forest in Arizona, where she served as the ecosystem staff officer since 2009.
“I look forward to getting to know the employees and contributing to a positive and transparent work environment,” said Masters. “I also look forward to working together with employees, communities, and stakeholders to manage the natural resources of the Humboldt-Toiyabe.”

Through many years of living in Carson City, I have enjoyed many of the activities associated with the celebration of our state's admission to the Union, way back on October 31, 1864.

The quip made the Reno paper the next day and earned Shaughnessy an early morning call from then-Gov. Mike O’Callaghan, who was notorious for reading people the riot act.

Yearling bear cub caught by game warden after lurking along Carson City streets
Submitted by Jeff Munson on Sat, 10/05/2013 - 1:38amA 200-pound female yearling bear decided to explore the streets of Carson City on Friday night, climbing over fences, going through backyards and finally climbing up a tree before being tranquilized by a Nevada Department of Wildlife game warden.
The hungry bear cub was even chased by a couple of cows when she lumbered through Lompa Ranch field, said Carson City Sheriff Ken Furlong. Deputies and two mounted officers on horses had been pursuing the bear since early Friday evening attempting to coax her west toward the foothills.
State investigates shooting of two horses east of Carson City

The Nevada Department of Agriculture reports one horse, which appeared to have been shot, was found dead Monday near Mound House in Lyon County.
Another horse, which appeared to have been shot with arrows and was near death, was found near the same area. The second horse was euthanized by a state agricultural enforcement officer.

Submitted by Jeff Munson on Tue, 08/20/2013 - 9:07amThe Lyon County Animal Services Division initiated an investigation of the Starlight Sanctuary in Silver Springs, due to complaints of mistreatment of horses. Officers viewed approximately 70 horses on the property.
Officers found appropriate feed and water for the animals and observed some horses that were underweight or had other health concerns. Animal Services has requested veterinarian to respond to the site to determine the health of the animals in question.

West Nile Virus confirmed in Carson City; treatment of areas begins this week

Officials tested wetlands, ditches and other small bodies of water primarily along the I-580 freeway. On Monday it was confirmed the virus is present at three of the sites tested.

A favorite performer on the Cowboy Poetry circuit, singer-songwriter, poet and working cowboy Beck is touring in support of his album “Tribute,” which showcases original horse songs written through the years, raising money for The Joyful Horse Project, a non-profit organization based in Austin, Texas that pairs combat veterans with rescue horses being trained for rehabilitation.

The area known as Fish Springs, three miles southeast of Gardnerville, is home to scattered bands of wild horses that have become part of the landscape to property owners over the past 20 years. The situation came to a head recently, when residents provided supplemental watering tanks for the horses.

Assembly Committee OKs Bill That Would Ban Horse Tripping

A Nevada Assembly committee supported banning most “horse tripping” for sport, entertainment, or practice Thursday, sending a bill to the full Assembly.
State Senate Bill 72 was one of many bills prohibiting animal cruelty that were discussed in the Assembly Committee on Natural Resources on Thursday. It bans horse tripping unless it is part of an event that is allowed by the local government.
The bill passed the committee by a vote of 10-2, with Assemblymen Ira Hansen, R-Sparks, and John Ellison, R-Elko, opposing the bill.
