CARSON CITY – State Senate Majority Leader Steven Horsford today announced the creation of 10 standing committees and his selections for the chairs of the panels for the 2011 legislative session.
He also established a new select committee on economic growth and employment.

CARSON CITY – The private attorney working on Nevada’s challenge to the new national health care law says a federal judge in Florida should rule on the case by January, setting the stage for an appeal that ultimately is expected to reach the U.S. Supreme Court.

This year, the Nevada Highway Patrol is partnering with other local groups to help raise funds for cancer research, Trooper Matthew Kaplan reports.

By participating in a charity called Movember (Moustache + November), troopers will be sporting mustaches for the month of November to help raise awareness for men's health issues. The mustaches will act as a "ribbon" to help generate conversation, and ultimately, encourage people to donate to the cause.

CARSON CITY – Veteran Republican state Sen. Bill Raggio, R-Reno, won’t be minority leader in the upcoming 2011 session, withdrawing his name from consideration for the leadership post today after getting GOP criticism for backing Sen. Harry Reid in the Tuesday general election.

Carson Tahoe Physician Clinics opens the first “Clinic at Wal-Mart” in the region, with a short ribbon cutting ceremony on Monday, Nov. 8 at 10 a.m.
The clinic is located inside the Walmart located at 3770 South Highway 395 off Topsy Lane.

A family fun event to emphasize healthy lifestyle choices for children will be held today, Saturday, Nov. 13 at the Carson Mall Center Court from 11 a.m. to 1 p.m. The event is free and open to all.

Dozens of Nevada’s nonprofit groups, service providers and others met this week in Reno and Las Vegas to consider the looming threat of deep cuts to the state budget cuts which threaten to eliminate or dramatically reduce health care, education, and human services.

Service agency and nonprofit directors from Lyon and Storey counties attended the Monday meeting, hoping for insights on how to plan for the upcoming deep cuts to Nevada’s public education, health and social services that will hit the rural areas especially hard.

A debate today among the three candidates for Nevada attorney general focused on a disputed ad discussing a decades old criminal conviction of the Republican seeking the post and allegations of political favoritism by the incumbent, Democrat Catherine Cortez Masto.

Pat Wiggins, director of Animal Services for Carson City, has resigned after 10 years of service.

According to a news release by Carson City Health and Human Services, Wiggins is responsible for recently bringing the progressive “Trap Neuter Release” program for feral cats to Carson City and was a regular presenter at Capital City Farm Days, an annual educational program for students held at Fuji Park.

A much-anticipated face-to-face debate between U.S. Sen. Harry Reid and his GOP opponent Sharron Angle on Thursday displayed stark contrasts between the two candidates but provoked little in the way of controversy.

Carson City Health and Human Services will hold three free vaccination clinics. A walk-in vaccination clinic will be at Carson City Senior Center, 911 Beverly Drive. Drive-through clinics will be held at Nevada National Guard, 244 Fairview Drive and East Fork Fire and Paramedic Districts, Station 12, 3620 N. Sunridge Drive. A proclamation from Mayor Bob Crowell has proclaimed Oct. 16 is Community Flu Vaccination Day emphasizing the importance of vaccination as the best defense against flu and serves as a reminder that free influenza vaccinations will be offered to the community Saturday, Oct.

Walmart and Carson Tahoe Regional Healthcare have teamed up and announced today Carson City’s newest location for basic health care services called "The Clinic at Walmart" which will be run by Carson Tahoe Physician Clinics.

Taxes, the state budget and a looming revenue shortfall in 2011 took center stage Thursday in the second debate between the two major party candidates for Nevada governor.

CARSON CITY – State Senate Minority Leader Bill Raggio said today he will make an endorsement in the neck-and-neck U.S. Senate race within the next few days.

CARSON CITY – Republican state treasurer candidate Steve Martin said today the Democratic incumbent is playing politics by delaying a discussion involving an unprecedented $50 million investment loss until after the Nov. 2 general election.

Saturday, Oct. 16 is Carson City Community Flu Vaccination Day, with vaccines offered to the community at no cost.
It is the seventh year for the program. Last year, there were 8,000 seasonal flu shots given and 21,000 H1N1 shots administered, health officials said.
Approximately 5,000 of the doses have been ordered and will be ready to administer on Oct. 16, said Susan Pintar, county health officer.
There will be three locations for the free community vaccination day, which will run from 9 a.m. to 1 p.m. They are:

Freida Carbery of Dayton has been named Nevada Prevention Fellow. As an organizer for the Dayton Food Bank through the Healthy Communities Coalition of Lyon and Storey counties, Carbery has engaged dozens of community volunteers in the region.

Attorney General Catherine Cortez Masto will hold the first statewide Domestic Violence Fatality Review Summit in Las Vegas on Friday, bringing together over 120 people from around the state to address the issue of domestic violence deaths in Nevada.
The summit will take place at the Suncoast Hotel Casino, 9090 Alta Drive, from 8:30 a.m. to 4:30 p.m.

Flu shots for anyone over 6 months of age, and commodities food distribution for those in need from Dayton, Silver City and Stagecoach takes place at the Dayton Food Pantry at 4 Enterprise Way and Highway 50 in Dayton on Oct. 21, between noon and 5 p.m.

Health and Human Services recommends that everyone 6 months and older should get a flu vaccine. On Oct. 21 only, between noon and 5pm, Carson Health nurses will be able to provide the following types of flu shots at the Dayton Food Pantry at 4 Enterprise Way:

Ford Motor Company and Capital Ford in Carson City are partnering to help raise money in support of Carson High School as part of Ford’s Drive One 4 UR School program.

Members of the local Carson City community will have the opportunity to raise up to $6,000 for Carson High School by test driving a Ford vehicle at Carson High School on October 2 from 9 a.m. to 5 p.m.

Republican Congressional candidate Joe Heck said today he expects the race between him and incumbent Rep. Dina Titus, D-Nev., to be decided by no more than 2 percentage points in the November general election.

National health care will be the topic of a Business Resource Workshop discussion by the Carson City Chamber of Commerce on Friday, Oct 8, beginning at 8 a.m. The meeting will be held at the Business Resource Innovation Center, 108 E.
