May is Bike Month in Carson City, and that means more bike riders out and about, commuting, or riding for fun. In honor of National Bike Month, Muscle-Powered, Citizens for a Walkable and Bikeable Carson City has developed a full schedule of events for 2013, including the Tour de Carson May 5- a 30-mile bike ride for more advanced riders, along with two Family Cruise rides, one on May 15 at 6 p.m. starting at Telegraph Square, and a second Ride with a Vet on May 18 in conjunction with Chapter 388 of the Vietnam Veterans of America.

Water conditions are spring-perfect!
Due to the recent weather, most fish have been eating at night, pushing back the best time to go fishing on the lake. Most reports indicate that time is somewhere around 10:00AM.

Bike Carson-Tahoe will be doing a clinic at the shop on Wednesday night, May 1st, at 6:30 PM. Owner Chris Huber will cover flat repair, a lesson on gearing (numerical explanation, gear overlap, what gear to use, etc.), and also touch on group riding etiquette.

Presented by the Xerces Society, the Pollinator Conservation Planning Short Course will be offered on the Western
Nevada College Fallon Campus. The workshop will be followed by a tour of the National Resources Conservation
Service’s Great Basin Plant Materials Center in Fallon.

Cost is $45. Workshop topics include pollination economics and biology, bee-friendly farming, pollinator habitat and restoration, and more. Participants will learn how to identify and protect nesting sites and how to design habitats for native pollinators.

Next month is Bike Month and there are plenty of activities planned in Carson City. We kick off on April 24 with Nevada Moves Day at the State Legislature.
Muscle Powered is organizing exhibits in the front foyer of the legislative building highlighting Nevada groups working for better walking and biking. Participants include the Reno Bike Project, Safe Routes to Schools, the Carson Valley Trails Association and more.

Carson City and nearby Douglas County as well as Esmerelda and White Pine counties have been designated disaster areas due to damages and losses caused by recent drought, the U.S. Department of Agriculture confirms today in a news release.

And the following California counties contiguous to Nevada have also been declared disaster areas because of drought conditions: Alpine, El Dorado, Inyo, Mono and Placer.

I am contacting you to request your support this week for a bicycle and pedestrian project in Carson City.

The members of the newly formed five-member Sagebrush Ecosystem Team, an interagency multidisciplinary entity, were announced recently.

If you’re new to tubeless bicycle tires, you may not be aware that they need periodic maintenance. Although a tire may continue to hold air indefinitely, flat protection can diminish after just a few months as the sealant drys up. In addition to adding fresh sealant, it’s best to remove the old sealant for best performance. The old sealant can pool and stick to a specific location in the tire, or form into strange rubber crystals. If not removed, the dried sealant adds excess rotating mass to the tire, and can throw the wheel out of balance.

Along with the Lake Tahoe Regional Plan Update, Mobility 2035, which is the Lake Tahoe Regional Transportation Plan and Sustainable Communities Strategy, was also approved by regional boards last week at Harvey’s Resort convention center in Stateline, NV. Passage of the Sustainable Communities Strategy makes Tahoe the fourth region in the state of California to approve a plan that complies with new greenhouse gas emissions legislation, according to the Tahoe Regional Planning Agency (TRPA) and Tahoe Metropolitan Planning Organization (TMPO).

The highly anticipated annual Dungeness crab sport fishery opened statewide Nov. 3.
Every year at this time, recreational crab fishing enthusiasts set out in pursuit of these tasty crustaceans. Some set hoop nets and crab traps from boats and piers while others fish crab loop traps on the end of a fishing rod. Still others will dive in to take the crabs by hand.

When you talk to chukar hunters in Nevada you hear about how challenging the hunt actually is. You climb up steep mountains with rough terrain trying to catch a bird that is fast and clever and seems to take great joy in taunting you. It makes you wonder why they do it.
“There are so many reasons why chukar hunting is so popular in Nevada,” said Chris Vasey, Western Region outdoor educator at the Nevada Department of Wildlife (NDOW). “It really is the thrill of the chase. I can honestly say there are very few things as rewarding as getting your limit in chukar.”

Boaters heading to Lake Tahoe in the next six weeks may experience a short delay when entering Emerald Bay due to an Asian clam control project that will be taking place there.

A team of partners from the Lake Tahoe Aquatic Invasive Species Program is scheduled to begin implementation of the largest Asian clam control project in the history of Lake Tahoe on October 15, with plans to treat an area of up to 5 acres at the mouth of Emerald Bay.

Once again, the Gonads -n- Strife Bicycle Club is doing their Fall Poker Run. This fun ride takes you from the Great Basin Brewing Company in Sparks, through Victorian Square, along the Truckee River, through downtown Reno, and then back again. There are many fun stops along the way as you collect your poker hand. The highest hand at the end wins an Electra cruiser! There are many other great raffle prizes as well, and they always donate the money to a good cause.

The U.S. Court of Appeals for the Ninth Circuit affirmed Thursday a district court ruling upholding Lake Tahoe area environmental analysis for the Angora fire area fuels reduction project.
The Angora Restoration Project was designed to protect wildlife habitat as well as reduce long-term wildfire risk to Lake Tahoe area communities. Two environmental groups, Earth Island Institute and Center for Biological Diversity, tried to stop arguing it would harm the black-backed woodpecker.

RENO, Nev. – Putting the water-use-efficient and turbo-charged photosynthesis from plants such as agave into woody biomass plants such as poplar can hedge against predicted long-term increases in temperatures and reduced precipitation. It can also provide dedicated energy crops suitable for establishment on marginal land as a source of renewable biomass.

The environmental non-profit Tahoe Fund presented a $27,500 check to the California Tahoe Conservancy yesterday to allow completion of the Lower Blackwood Creek and Eagle Rock Restoration Project, a critical creek restoration and trailhead project on Lake Tahoe’s west shore. In a shining example of public-private partnership, the money was donated by the Tahoe Fund’s private donors at its annual Founders Circle Summer Dinner in August to help aid the state’s leading Tahoe conservation agency in its efforts to improve lake clarity and recreational opportunities in the Lake Tahoe Basin.
