Spring Plant Sale Takes Place Saturday at The Greenhouse Project

The Greenhouse Project hosts its annual Mother’s Day Weekend Spring Plant Sale, Saturday from 8 a.m. to 1 p.m.

All the plants are grown from seeds harvested at The Greenhouse and features diverse vegetable and flower transplants including Heirloom tomatoes, zucchini, squash, rainbow chard, hot and mild peppers, melons, herbs, cucumbers, greens and petunias, annual flower, perennial bedding plants and more.

Public Invited to Mark Earth Day With Painting Party at The Greenhouse, Saturday

Everyone is invited to bring their inner artist to The Greenhouse Project in Carson City, Saturday, April 26, 10 a.m. to 2 p.m., to paint the nearly 70 above-ground planter boxes.

Come enjoy refreshments, being creative and loving the earth. Folks are also invited to tour The Greenhouse while on site. Paints and brushes will be provided, or for those with a favorite brush or color, feel feel to take them.

Bring a pad or towel to sit on, friends and family, and get ready to leave some art behind. All levels of talent are welcome and encouraged.

Perception of The Greenhouse Project

I received an e-mail that asked why the non-profit Greenhouse Project (TGP) could sell mushrooms to Adele's Cafe (Adele's Facebook posting March 22nd). Supervisor Abowd is founder and president of TGP and co-owner with her husband Charlie of Adele's Cafe. The e-mail question and response follow.

Tickets on Sale Now for Concert Under the Stars, featuring headliner Little River Band

Tickets are on sale now for the annual Concert Under the Stars: A Benefit for The Greenhouse Project, which takes place July 9, at Café at Adele’s in Carson City and features The Little River Band and Fred Tackett and Paul Barrere of Little Feat.

The evening includes an auction with wonderful big ticket items, including trips and dinner following the show with the band at Café at Adele’s and a “Chair-ity” silent auction to benefit the FFA at Carson High School, where The Greenhouse is located, beginning at 5 p.m. Seating opens at 5:30 p.m. and show begins at 6:30 p.m.

Little River Band to headline Carson City Concert Under the Stars benefit for Greenhouse Project

Attention Night Owls, those who prefer Reminiscing or maybe in need of a Cool Change: Multi-Grammy winning group The Little River Band along with Paul Barrère and Fred Tackett of Little Feat will headline the July 9 Carson City Concert Under the Stars to benefit the Greenhouse Project, according to its Facebook page.

Karen Abowd announces run for second Carson City Board of Supervisors term

Karen Abowd on Tuesday announced her second run as Carson City Supervisor Ward I, citing her desire to see through many projects currently in process, as well as her commitment to the future of Nevada’s Capital City.

“Carson City has gone through some tough economic times and continues to,” Abowd said. “We have needed to be careful in our planning and how we spend available dollars in order to create sustainable, relevant opportunities that have immediate positive impacts, and build a future we can be proud to leave our children and grandchildren.”

Carson City's Karen Abowd, Mary Fischer honored with Girl Scouts of Sierra Nevada Triumphant Award

Carson City residents Karen Abowd and Mary Fischer, will be honored tonight at The Atlantis Hotel and Casino, when they receive the Girl Scouts of the Sierra Nevada’s 2013 TRIUMPHANT Awards.

Karen Abowd will receive the Environmental Leader award for her work with The Greenhouse Project, a non-profit community greenhouse located on Carson High School’s campus that teaches sustainability and new agricultural principals and produces food for the community. Mary Fischer will receive the Community Service award for her work with Gardeners Reclaiming Our Waysides (G.R.O.W.), a non-profit she founded in 1997 with the purpose of beautifying area roadways using landscaping and art.

Entertainment includes high school performers and live music by local acts. Art will be displayed in our 70 raised flower beds. This will be family/kid-friendly event! - paints for kids to play with, we will also be doing live screen printing on bio t-shirts, and we will have some thrift store finds as well to work with. Unique designed t-shirts will be on sale.

And those attending Concert Under the Stars, A Benefit for The Greenhouse Project headlined by WAR and its leader of more than 40 years, Lonnie Jordon, will have two women to thank when John Street adjacent to Café at Adele’s in Carson City, becomes a happy place of sorts July 9.

Growing up in Compton, Calif., Jordon may have spent more time listening to the old guys who were gathered on porches playing music than he should have, a fact he’s quick to say he’s not proud of.

This year’s openers features ragtime western and Americana music by C.W. & Mr. Spoons, and freshly interpreted favorites from the 1950s through ‘90s by Notch 8, fast becoming one of northern Nevada’s favorite bands.

Introducing Grace Works, or as others have called it “The Church has left the Building!” This is a Sunday when area churches show God’s love through providing services, rather than going to services. It is an event that has been going on in several other communities across the US, involving thousands of people on a given Sunday. The First Presbyterian Church started it here in Carson City two years ago; last year Ministerios Una Puerta Al Camino ( The Church of the Door to the Way) joined them. Over 150 people participated.

Legendary rock band “War” will headline this summer’s Concert Under the Stars taking place Tuesday, July 9 outdoors behind Café at Adele’s. The annual event benefits Carson City’s Greenhouse Project. The gates open at 5 p.m. and the music begins at 6:30 p.m.

Café at Adele’s 'Dining Out for Life' on Thursday to benefit HIV awareness

Café at Adele’s joins Northern Nevada Hopes’ ‘Dining Out for Life’ in making a difference in the lives of those living with HIV.

On Thursday, April 25, Café at Adele’s will donate 20 percent of every dining ticket total to Northern Nevada Hopes so the non-profit organization can continue its work of raising awareness about and providing STD, HIV and Hepatitis C testing, as well as providing extensive support and medical care for those living with HIV in northern Nevada.

Earth Week celebrated at Western Nevada College campuses in Carson City, Fallon

Two free lectures by science experts - one about the violent geologic history of Lake Tahoe, another concerning global warming, will highlight the many free activities at Western Nevada College during Earth Week, April 22-27.
Renewable energy exhibits, an organic gardening lecture, alternative fuel vehicles and a tree planting ceremony will also be featured.

“Many diverse and interesting activities will be offered,” said Valerie Andersen, WNC public service librarian and college Earth Week event coordinator. Students, faculty and the public are invited to attend.

The Greenhouse Project Hosts Tours, Free Workshop

The Carson City Greenhouse will offer tours of its premises on Saturday, October 6, 2012 from 9 a.m. until 1 p.m. At 10:30 a.m., Greenhouse manager Ray Saliga will present a workshop on propagating herbs from cuttings. The Greenhouse is located on the Carson High School campus, 1111 North Saliman Road. To reach it, turn into the high school property from Saliman Road at Robinson Street. The public is invited to attend.

Greenhouse Project benefit exceeds expectations

This year's A Concert Under the Stars, a fund-raiser for The Greenhouse Project has exceeded all expectations, according to Karen Abowd, project president.
"Preliminary numbers look like we raised between $32,000 and $34,000," Abowd said.
The goal had been to clear between $20 and $25,000.
The sold-out event hosted by Cafe at Adele's Wednesday,was headlined by PabloCruise and featured opening music by Jaime Kyle and The Mighty Surf Lords. Chili Bop Entertainment, co-owned by John Procaccini, long-time Carson City resident, was the event's promoter.

Pablo Cruise headlines A Concert Under the Stars Wednesday

Dave Jenkins returns for his second performance at A Concert Under the Stars, a fundraiser for The Greenhouse Project, July 11 with his band, Pablo Cruise.
Jenkins performed four years ago for the inaugural event, which takes place at Café at Adele’s, but his love of music began at a tender age.
“My folks had an old pump organ and I couldn’t reach the pedals,” Jenkins said. “I’d play and my sister would pump the pedals for me; I always had an ear and a love for music.”

Tickets are on sale for the fourth annual Concert Under the Stars, a fundraiser for The Greenhouse Project, featuring Pablo Cruise, Jaime Kyle and Northern Nevada’s own The Mighty Surf Lords.

The event takes place July 11 at Café at Adele’s and begins with the silent auction at 5 p.m., followed at 6 p.m. with happy, fun-filled music by The Mighty Surf Lords, who also played the venue last year and who open this year for Jaime Kyle and Pablo Cruise.

Greenhouse Project Plant Sale

Carson City’s Greenhouse Project will hold a plant and yard sale on Saturday, May 19th from 8am to noon. Several varieties of seedlings and small plants will be available including tomatoes, peppers and petunias. The Greenhouse opened in December 2011, these plants are the first crops grown in the facility. There will also be a yard sale of donated items including restaurant supplies and household items. All money raised will benefit the Greenhouse Project.

The Greenhouse Project is located on the campus of Carson High School, 1111 N. Saliman in Carson City.
