Carson City Navy League to Celebrate Veteran's Day

The Carson City Council of the Navy League of the United States will honor our Veterans, past and present, at our November Meeting! The Dinner Meeting will be held on Thursday, November 13, at Gold Dust West Hotel and Casino, 2171 Hwy 50E, Carson City.

This is a change of venue and day of the week. The social hour is at 5:30 PM followed by a buffet dinner at 6:30 PM. We will also be celebrating the Marine Corp’s 239th Birthday. Our speaker will be Colonel Scott D. Leonard, USMC, Commanding Officer, Marine Corps Mountain Warfare Training Center.

Senator Square: Carson High senior Caden Lehman wins national rodeo event

Caden Lehman, a senior at Carson High School, an officer for the Capitol FFA program, and an officer in the Douglas-Carson High School Rodeo Club, recently had his biggest win doing what he loves. He is involved in Team Roping and Calf Roping and is a member of the American Cowboys Team Roping Association. 

Recently at the ACTRA National Finals in Reno at the Livestock Events Center, Caden won the Super 7 National Championship, landing him and his partner, Jack Curry of Gardnerville, each new Royal T 3-horse trailers, buckles, and $10,000 cash.

Nevada Day Pow Wow 2014 begins Friday at the Carson Colony

The Carson Colony in Carson City invites everyone to its 31st Annual La Ka Lel Be Pow Wow during Nevada Day Weekend.

Witness the Grand Entry at 7 p.m. on Friday, Oct. 31; 2 p.m. and 7 p.m. on Saturday, Nov. 1; or 12 p.m. Sunday, Nov. 2. The event is held in the Carson Colony Gym, 2900 South Curry Street.

Native American tribes from all over the United States and Canada come to participate.

Sesquicentennial Honoring Reception for the 1964 Centennial Indian Princesses

Fifty years ago, Aloha Callac-Jones was one of 22 women from throughout the state to compete in a traditional Indian princess pageant to celebrate Nevada’s 100th birthday. She won the crown in 1964 and when the state celebrates its 150th birthday, Callac-Jones will be here. She will travel from her home in Florida to join in the birthday celebration and the 2014 Sesquicentennial Honoring Reception for the 1964 Centennial Indian Princesses, co-hosted by the Nevada Indian Commission and the Reception Planning Committee.

Nevada 150 events lined up through the end of October

Many celebrations are scheduled throughout the Silver State in the month of October. These Nevada 150 events celebrate all things Nevada and help bring awareness to the 150th Anniversary of Statehood. The following events are held Oct. 16 through 30. Highlights of statewide Nevada Day weekend events are forthcoming.

On Friday Oct. 17, come watch the Nevada 150 Pony Express Delivery, on the south steps of the Nevada State Capitol Building in Carson City at 3:30 p.m.

Chamber Soup's On! Luncheon to feature Carson City Manager Nick Marano

Youth football event at Carson High causes parking jam

Thousands are gathering today at Carson High School for the Sierra Youth Football League Carson Experience. More than 15,000 parents, coaches, players and fans are expected to attend the event, which has brought players to scrimmage from Northern Nevada and Northern California.

Parking has swelled, filling lots at the high school, nearby churches, side streets and at Mills Park. Parking is now being encouraged at Gold Dust West, according to Carson City Sheriff’s Office deputies via dispatch. There is a shuttle bus that is operating, transporting passengers to the event from the resort casino, located at 2171 Highway 50 East.

Carson City Fire official: One fire touched off during the fireworks show

UPDATE: Carson City Battalion Chief John Arneson says there was one fire only near the fireworks area with firefighters coming from multiple locations to fight it. He said firefighters attacked the fire from three locations, extinguishing it within 20 to 30 minutes after it started.

CHS Bowling Steamrolls Manogue 34-11 for Unprecedented 13th Title

The Carson High Bowling team wasted no time at all in wrapping up their 13th championship in 14 seasons on Wednesday at the Grand Sierra Resort against Manogue High School.

The Carson High School starting lineup: Alec Fletcher, Jacob Zumbro, Dustin Floyd, Skylar Belchar, Brett Paulson, Matt Lidell, Chris Baird, Conlin Herrick, and Tyler Lethcoe steamrolled Manogue 34-11 in the Baker's format for the title. CHS wrapped up the championship by the 6th game in the 9 game match.

December's Empty Bowls Project in Carson City raises more than $2,700 for FISH

The Empty Bowls project, a locally organized fundraiser that culminated at the Carson City Silver and Snowflake Festival on Dec. 6 and was initiated to bring awareness of local hunger issues, raised $2,722.35 for Friends in Service Helping, also known as FISH, which feeds, houses and provides services for more than 20,000 people in Carson City annually.
