Carson City Historical Society hosts 'The Once and Future Prison' lecture

Carson City Historical Society is proud to host a lecture on the future of the Nevada State Prison called "The Once and Future Prison," on Thursday, March 17, 2022, at 7:30 p.m. via Zoom. The guest speaker is Glen Whorton, past President of the Nevada State Prison Preservation Society.

Carson City Leisure Hour Club recognizes Nevada State Prison Preservation Society

CARSON CITY

Every year Carson City’s Leisure Hour Club recognizes local not-for-profit groups that excel in supporting the greater Carson City community. On Feb. 19 the club donated $500 to the Nevada State Prison Preservation Society. Glen Whorton, President of the NSPPS, accepted the donation and said that the donation will contribute to making the prison open to the public.

Hot August Nights, outdoor concerts, park history walks and more: Carson City region in store for eventful weekend

Heading into the weekend, there’s a bevy of activities around the Carson City region over the next three days, including Hot August Nights Kickoff Rallies in Virginia City, history walks at Mormon Station Park, pickleball at the Carson City MAC, concerts at the Brewery Arts Center and TJ’s Corral, a Muscle Powered Sunday morning bike ride and more!

Guest Speakers and Mo'z Motley Blues at Dangberg Historic Park

The month of August begins with a presentation on “The Great State Embezzlement,” Mo’z Motley Blues in concert and a presentation on “The History of Baseball in Nevada” at the Dangberg Home Ranch Historic Park.

On Sunday, August 4, at 10 a.m., Glen Whorton, President of the Nevada State Prison Preservation Society, returns to the park to speak on this year’s topic “The Great State Embezzlement.” This is a free event for all to attend.

'The Mustang,' filmed in Carson City, coming to Galaxy Fandango April 11

A new movie that was filmed at the historic state prison in Carson City “The Mustang” starring veteran actor Bruce Dern and Matthias Schoenaerts, known for the Academy Award winning film “The Danish Girl” and Jennifer Lawrence’s “Red Sparrow,” will premiere in Carson City on April 11 at the Galaxy Fandango Theaters with the first showing at 7 p.m.

Speaker Glen Whorton of the Nevada State Prison Preservation Society will speak on “The Prison in Nevada History” in a free presentation at the Dangberg Home Ranch Historic Park on Saturday, July 7, at 10 a.m.

President of the Nevada State Prison Preservation Society, Glen Whorton, will present a history of the Nevada State Prison from 1861 until its closing in 2012. The presentation will include its territorial origins, famous or infamous incidents, its wardens and inmates.

Nevada State Prison Museum nears opening, site used for Indie movie 'Mustang'

It’s taken a lot of work over these past few years to meet all the requirements needed to be able to convert the historic Nevada State Prison into Carson City’s third history museum.

Navy sailors on deck Saturday for volunteer work at historic Nevada State Prison

Glen Whorton, president of the Nevada State Prison Preservation Society, welcomed 13 sailors from Carrier Air Wing Three of Virginia Beach, VA to the Nevada State Prison on Saturday. The crew performs volunteer work while training at the Naval Air Station in Fallon.

Navy sailors to perform volunteer services in Carson City

Fifteen sailors from Carrier Air Wing Three of Virginia Beach, VA will be in Carson City on Saturday, Oct. 3 and Saturday, Oct. 10 to perform volunteer work at some of our most historic sites.

The sailors will be training at Fallon Naval Air Station and when in any community perform volunteer duties to “leave each place we visit in better condition,” according to Lt. Robert D Fasnacht, group leader.

Whorton unwelds history at Nevada State Prison ahead of Chamber 70th anniversary

Miracles are happening at the Nevada State Prison thanks to organizational skills of one individual who knows this prison inside and out, has great people skills, and knows the right people to make miracles happen.

While it is taking plenty of hands — both volunteer and the not-so-volunteer — to bring the prison up to a standard where those attending the historic Carson City Chamber BBQ and Lacy J. Dalton Concert can be comfortable, it probably couldn’t happen without the former Nevada Director of Corrections Glen Whorton directing the “work crews.”

'My First Day in Prison' featured Jan. 22 at Nevada State Prison Preservation Society talk

CARSON CITY, Nev. — How was your first day in prison? That’s what E.K. McDaniel and Glen Whorton will describe at 6:30 p.m. on Wednesday, Jan. 22 at the Carson Nugget.

Of course, McDaniel and Whorton were able to go home after their first day — because they worked for the Department of Corrections. And both had many days after that to learn the unique job of working on the inside.
Their talk on "My First Day in Prison" is free and open to the public.

Great and not so great escapes from Nevada State Prison featured at Oct. 16 talk

One escape from Nevada State Prison fits the category of “great.” Most of the others, not so much. Glen Whorton, former director of the Nevada Department of Corrections, will speak at 6:30 p.m. Oct. 16 at the Silver Oak Executive Conference Center in Carson City on “Great and not so great escapes from Nevada State Prison.”

His talk is free and open to the public. It is the first in a monthly series of presentations by the Nevada State Prison Preservation Society on the history of the 151-year-old prison.
