Outdoors with Don Q: A special way to celebrate a special day

Elaine and I just returned home from a special way to celebrate a special occasion. March 30 was our 10th wedding anniversary and we had wanted to do something out of the ordinary for that event.

When we were married 10 years ago, we took a 19 day honeymoon in Southeast Asia, which included Hong Kong, China; Singapore, Malaysia; Bangkok, Thailand; and the last eight days at Bali, Indonesia.

Most interesting, we took my new mother-in-law, Mary Bottoms, with us!
I bet that very few of you took your mother-in-law on your honeymoon!

Don Q Outdoors: Six more days left to fish many California waters

This my annual reminder that many nearby California waters will close to
fishing on November 15…that’s this coming Tuesday.

That’s only six days from now, so if you want to fish any of them, you better
hustle because you are running out of time.

Those waters will not re-open until the last Saturday in April next year
(April 28, 2012), and that is a long time to wait to wet your line.
Here is a partial list of some of the nearby waters that will be closing:

It's Carson River Canyon, not Brunswick Canyon

In honor of retired state archivist Guy Rocha's 60th birthday today, I want to aid him in one of his favorite pursuits, busting myths about Nevada.

In this case, locals commonly make the mistake of saying Brunswick Canyon when they are actually talking about Carson River Canyon. I make this mistake, and I see many instances of this also coming out in arrest reports and press releases from the Carson City Sheriff's Office.

Carson City schools lead statewide effort to save money with efficient lighting

By Sean Sever
With shrinking budgets and rising energy costs, many of Nevada’s school districts have turned to renewable energy and energy conservation measures to save money. The Carson City School District, for example, has used the Nevada State Office of Energy’s (NSOE) Schools Program to install new LED and Super T-8 fluorescent lighting at three schools that will save them almost $80,000 in energy costs annually.
