On warm summer evenings in Genoa, when the sun begins to dip behind the Sierra Nevada, and the shadows grow long, and the light turns amber and gold, people gather in the Genoa Park on the green grass with their picnic dinners to listen to music. The summer sizzles as the Mile High Jazz Band Association, Carson City, local businesses and jazz lovers proudly present the 2012 "Jazz & Beyond" Carson City Music Festival, an annual event that began in August 2004. Performances at multiple venues in Carson City will feature more than 100 musicians in over 50 bands, Aug. 3-19 and are mainly free. Music styles include Dixieland jazz, big band, bluegrass, Latin, blues and folk.

It only takes four days to celebrate statehood in Nevada. The Silver State knows how to party! The annual Carson City Nevada Day events will observe the 147th year since joining the union, with the theme, “Nevada's Great Outdoors,” Oct. 27-30, 2011.

A four-day celebration of the Silver State's admission to the Union in 1864 will be celebrated the last weekend in October in Nevada's state capitol of Carson City.

Mile High Jazz Band Association and Carson High Jazz Band present a free concert by The Commanders Jazz Ensemble from the US Air Force Band of the Golden West. The concert is a preliminary event to the "Jazz! Carson City" music festival, which will feature over 45 free music events this coming August.

The inauguration of Nevada's 29th governor, Brian Sandoval, will begin on Sunday with a celebration of arts in Carson City and then continue on Monday with the official ceremony at 11:30 a.m. on the steps of the state capitol.

Beginning on Sunday, Jan. 2, from 1 to 5 p.m., cultural organizations in downtown Carson City will open their doors to offer free music and dance performances, demonstrations by traditional artists, visual arts and history exhibitions, children’s activities and shopping opportunities.

A reception for Carson Valley artist Rick Neubauer will be held in the Backseat Gallery of Comma Coffee on Wednesday, Sept. 1 beginning at 5 p.m. Hors d'ouevres, beer, and wine available. The event is free. Music will be by Nathan Alanz.
