Frances Humphrey Lecture Series: The Bombing of Gernika and its Impact upon the U.S.

The lecture is Thursday, Nov. 19, 6:30 p.m. at the Nevada State Museum in Carson City. This lecture and book signing by Xabier Irujo will be enjoyed by anyone interested the history of modern warfare, Basque studies, and ethical and humanitarian issues related to the effects of war on society.
Celebration of Basques at Nevada State Museum family fun program Oct. 10

The monthly Family Fun Saturdays series gets kids involved in many aspects of the museum, from Nevada history to cultural and nature studies. October’s event features Xabier Irujo, co-director at the Center for Basque Studies at UNR, his five young children and several special guests who will entertain and share culture and heritage.
Museum program features the story of Nevada bats August 27
Submitted by Carson Now Reader on Wed, 07/29/2015 - 2:44pmProtecting bat habitat across Nevada, and why doing so is good for all, is the topic of the Nevada State Museum, Carson City’s August program from 6:30 to 8 p.m. Thursday, August 27 presented by Jenni Jeffers.
Nevada is home to 23 species of bats. Its 250,000 abandoned mines have become important artificial roost sites for a large portion of our bat population for at least a part of their life. Jeffers will share how important bat habitat is protected and show photos of the species using these abandoned mines.

The Nevada State Museum will screen the film when historian Jim Bonar, director of the Nevada chapter of the Lincoln Highway Association, speaks in Carson City at the Nevada State Museum’s Frances Humphrey Lecture Series from 6:30 to 7:30 p.m. Thursday, March 26.

Engaging speakers and experts in the state’s heritage, the couple will share historic Nevada tales of mining and the Old West. Their book includes an illustrated walking tour describing more than 30 buildings and sites including the Comstock National Historic District, now designated a National Historic Landmark.

More than 450 miles and one month later, she arrived in Reno with a new appreciation for pioneering travelers who shaped the state more than 150 years ago. Paul Franklin talks 19th century mining at Nevada State Museum Sept. 26

Franklin wrote “Anatomy of an Ingot,” a book that offers an investigation into the lives of three assayers responsible for a significant piece of silver in the 19th century.
The group briefly came together more than 130 years ago to form an assay and metallurgical laboratory that produced a mysterious silver ingot. Their careers intersected with early mining history in California and the Arizona and Nevada territories.

His presentation “Recent Rock Art and Archaeological Discoveries in Lincoln County” is from 6:30 to 7:30 p.m. Thursday, May 23.

Faulds presents a thought-provoking question as the topic of the Nevada State Museum’s Frances Humphrey Lecture Series at 6:30 p.m. Thursday, March 28. In “Why is Nevada in Hot Water: Tectonic Controls on Geothermal Activity in the Great Basin,” Faulds focuses on how fault systems initiate and evolve through time.
Geothermal studies enhance understanding of what controls hot fluids in the earth’s crust and aid in exploration and discovery of energy resources. Scientists study geologic faults and stress conditions to determine where to drill.

A fascinating look at early prehistoric textiles in the Western Great Basin will be the theme of a Jan. 24 lecture presented by archaeologist Pat Barker beginning at 6:30 p.m. at the Nevada State Museum in Carson City as part of its monthly Our Frances Humphrey Lecture Series.
Barker will discuss prehistoric textiles, showcasing sandals, mats, bags, basketry, and cordage from the collections of the Nevada State Museum. Learn how foot ware can inform us about how people lived in the past.
