'The Odd Couple' from a woman's POV, Greenhouse Project fundraiser, music and more this weekend around Carson City region

Heading into the weekend, there’s an abundance of activities around the capital city region over the next three days. The Brewery Arts Center hosts a female version of "The Odd Couple." Carson City's Greenhouse Project is hosting a lunch and dinner fundraiser toward a healthier State Capitol. Dale Poune will perform at Bella Vita Bistro, plus comedy at the Carson Nugget, the Nevada Caucus on Saturday, an open house at the historic Foreman-Roberts House, a Latin-themed concert at the community center and more. Heading into the weekend, there’s a bevy of events around the Carson City region over the next three days. Dozens of sweets are in store for Saturday. The American Association of University Women holds its 20th annual Feast of Chocolate at the Carson Plaza and Event Center. Artsy Fartsy Gallery hosts its 9th annual Jewelry and Chocolate Show with several new decorative pieces. To cap-off Saturday, the legendary Cab Calloway Orchestra makes its way to the capital city.

Carson City Board of Supervisors to discuss grant funding, new Search and Rescue vehicles and more

The first Board of Supervisors meeting of February will take place on Feb. 6 beginning at 8:30 a.m. in the Sierra Room of the Community Center located at 851 E. William Street.

Heading into the Super Bowl weekend, there’s a bevy of activities around the Carson City region over the next three days. Events include the monthly downtown Carson City wine walk, plus karaoke at Bella Vita Bistro and Y-NOT Saloon. The Forest Service begins its first “Ski With a Ranger” at Lake Tahoe’s Heavenly Mountain Resort on Friday. Combined with championship football festivities on Sunday, the Silver State is in store for a wild, good time.

SOUTH LAKE TAHOE — The USDA Forest Service Lake Tahoe Basin Management Unit invites you to Ski with a Ranger at Heavenly Mountain Resort beginning Friday, Jan. 31, 2020. Tours begin at Tamarack Lodge, at the top of the Heavenly Gondola every Friday at 1 p.m. The tours last approximately one-hour and continue through March 27, 2020, weather permitting.

CARSON CITY — The Carson Ranger District on the Humboldt-Toiyabe National Forest is pleased to announce the return of the popular Forest Ranger-led snowshoe walks. The walks begin this Saturday, Jan. 25, and will be offered every Saturday through March 28.

The Nevada Division of Forestry is currently seeking pre-proposals for two competitive grant programs: Landscape Scale Restoration and State Fire Assistance.

Forest Service firefighter from Lake Tahoe deployed to Australia; BLM sends Carson City fuels program manager

UPDATE: The Bureau of Land Management says it has deployed six from Nevada who are helping with firefighting efforts in Australia. Two are already there, with four on the way including a Fuels Program Manager from Carson City who is serving as a plans chief. Other personnel are from the Battle Mountain District, an assistant Superintendent for the Silver State Hotshots, a helicopter supervisor from the Elko District and an Engine Captain from Southern Nevada.

Forest Service names Carrie Thaler as new Lake Tahoe Basin fire management officer

The USDA Forest Service Lake Tahoe Basin Management Unit is pleased to announce the arrival of our new Forest Fire Management Officer, Carrie Thaler. Thaler comes to the Lake Tahoe Basin from the Spring Mountains National Recreation Area in Las Vegas, where she held the position of District FMO for the last four years.

Nevada governor, federal agencies sign plan to reduce Nevada wildfire risk

An agreement that aims for state and federal agencies to increase their collaborative efforts to reduce the risks and impacts of catastrophic wildfire was finalized Friday by the Office of Nevada Gov. Steve Sisolak, the U.S. Forest Service, the Bureau of Land Management, and the U.S. Fish and Wildlife Service.

Caples Fire 100% Contained, Burned Area Assessment in Progress

PLACERVILLE, Calif. - Incident Commander Kevin Breitwieser has declared that the Caples Fire is now 100% contained and in patrol status at 3,435 acres. There has been almost no change in fire size since October 18. The extreme wind event on October 26 that prompted a public safety power shutoff was a good test of the containment lines and resulted in three small spots which were extinguished. Traces of smoke from interior burning will continue to be visible, but no additional fire growth is expected.

Permits to cut Christmas trees on the Carson and Bridgeport Ranger Districts of the Humboldt-Toiyabe National Forest will be available for purchase beginning Friday, Nov. 1. The U.S. Forest Service Christmas Tree Program is designed for families, businesses, and institutions wishing to cut their own trees for decorating.

SOUTH LAKE TAHOE — The USDA Forest Service Lake Tahoe Basin Management Unit has begun closing recreational facilities around the Tahoe Basin for the winter season.
