Carson City, Douglas and Nye counties awarded $1.2 million in federal EPA grants

The U.S. Environmental Protection Agency announced Wednesday that the Northern Nevada Development Authority and the Nye County Coalition will receive a total of $1.2 million in federal grant funds for brownfield site revitalization efforts.

Silver Springs, Nevada - There will be special holiday events and hours for Healthy Communities Coalition's Silver Stage Food Pantry, located at 3595 Ramsey Weeks Cutoff in Silver Springs. Normally, the Pantry is open Monday through Friday from 10am until 4pm. However, the Pantry will close at noon on Friday December 16th, and at noon on Monday, December 19th. The Pantry will also be closed on Tuesday, December 27th from noon to 2:30pm for a delivery.

Walmart helps sustain food pantries and job programs in rural Nevada communities

There was a lot of laughter and many hugs at a luncheon in Silver Springs as Bruce Barlow of Walmart presented a check for $70,000 to benefit the Dayton and Silver Stage Food Pantries.

Each summer, pantry volunteers, staff and participants host a lunchtime tour with key Walmart representatives to show their appreciation.

Carson City ramps up for 2016 Stamp Out Hunger Food Drive

It is again time for the annual Stamp Out Hunger Food Drive. This is the largest one day food drive in the nation, and helps local food banks stay stocked through the summer. All donations stay in the community in which they are collected. Last year we collected over 30,000 pounds of food for our community.

UNR researchers seek to improve teff grain production to help global food security

A project to improve teff grass, a staple grain that originated in Ethiopia, is underway at the University of Nevada, Reno. The aim is to make it more drought tolerant and productive under the harsh growing conditions being experienced worldwide as the popularity of this gluten-free grain grows with farmers and consumers in dry regions of the United States.

The United Nations General Assembly has declared 2015 the International Year of Soils to raise the awareness of the importance of soils for food security, clean water and other essential ecosystem functions. Soils are a hidden resource that we too often take for granted.

It takes between 100 years to 1,000 years to form one centimeter of healthy soil and only one to 10 years to destroy it. This valuable, but often unrecognized, resource is threatened by erosion, natural disasters, salinization, compaction, acidification and nutrient decline.

Winnemucca Community Garden Team Selected to Represent Nevada as USA Delegates to 2010 Worldwide Terra Madre Food Conference in Italy

Four representatives from The Winnemucca Community Garden (WCG) will be the only delegates from the state of Nevada to represent the United States when 5,000 representatives from the worldwide Terra Madre network meet in Turin, Italy this October. This event, in its fourth year, coincides with the international Slow Food Fair.
