We can expect showers this morning with some clearing this afternoon. Speaking of NCAA basketball, the 7th ranked Nevada Wolf Pack Men's basketball team will face 10th ranked Florida Gators today, 3:50 p.m.

A reminder of an old adage on this Thanksgiving Day
Submitted by editor on Thu, 11/27/2014 - 6:51amOnce again, as an annual reminder for this time of the year, when you get ready to sit down to your big, Thanksgiving dinner with all the trimmings, you might want to remember that old saying: “You are what you eat.”
So:
Outdoors with Don Q: Make plans this fall to visit Apple Hill
Submitted by Carson Now Reader on Thu, 10/16/2014 - 1:03pmA party of eight friends just returned from a fun-filled day at Apple Hill, California. Those ladies were: Mary Bottoms, Laurie Harig, Patti Isaman, Mary Morris, Elaine Quilici and Kathi Quilici, all of Carson City, plus Emily Bradburn and Carolyn Harton of Dayton. For three of them, it was their first tour-bus visit to Apple Hill.
And if you are a newcomer to our area or if you have never been there, fall is a great time of the year to visit Apple Hill like they did.
If you are a newcomer, about now you are probably wondering, “What and where in the heck is Apple Hill?”

Outdoors with Don Q: Enjoy a summer day at cooler high altitudes
Submitted by Carson Now Reader on Thu, 07/10/2014 - 10:57amNow that we are at that time of the year that I hate (daytime temperatures near, at or over 100 degrees), my thoughts drift off to hiking and fishing for trout at higher altitudes where it is cooler than here in Carson City.
When our local summer temperatures are over 80 degrees, it is miserably hot – hot – hot for this poor, sweltering soul.
Outdoors with Don Q: Good news for some is bad news for others
Submitted by Carson Now Reader on Thu, 07/03/2014 - 11:17amWe have a small, comfortable home, built in the late 1940's, located in the older west side of Carson City, and we recently discovered that what is considered good news for some is actually bad news for others in our particular neighborhood. Let me explain what I mean:

Three years! Time certainly flies when you are having fun, and it has been both a totally enjoyable and memorable three years of writing about all kinds of activities in the Great Outdoors, both near and far away.
Outdoors with Don Q: Work now to smell the roses when summer arrives
Submitted by Carson Now Reader on Thu, 01/09/2014 - 1:07pmIf you are like me, I would be willing to bet that by now, you are feeling trapped in your home by our winter weather.
And, as a die-hard winter addict, I love cold days, frosty nights, frigid temperatures, deep snow, thick ice, long hours of darkness and the starkness of our landscapes in the wintertime. However, I must admit that sometimes our winter season even wears me down a little bit.
So, when I am tired of browsing on the internet, playing card games on my computer and feel like the walls are closing in on me, I take some remedial action that you, too, might try.

Merry Christmas to You and Yours from our cabin
Submitted by Carson Now Reader on Tue, 12/24/2013 - 6:09amA very merry Christmas to all of you from the Quilici cabin, which is located near Davis Lake, Calif.
The cabin is on a gravel road that the county does not plow in the wintertime, so when it snows, we have to snowshoe to reach it. It is our favorite location for spending Christmas every year.

Outdoors with Don Q: Why five adults were crying Monday and Tuesday
Submitted by Carson Now Reader on Thu, 10/24/2013 - 11:06amFor the record, four adults (Chuck and Barbara Van Hise, plus Don and Elaine Quilici, all of Carson City) were crying at the Van Hise home on the afternoon of October 21. And, then the following afternoon, we would be joined by my son Jim, crying at his home.
Why was everyone crying on those two fateful days in late October?
Was it because someone had died? Nope.
Was it because someone had a serious illness? Nope.
Was it because someone had a serious injury? Nope.
Was it because there had been some bad news? Nope.

Don Q Outdoors: Go high to fish before it's too late
Submitted by admin on Thu, 09/26/2013 - 1:59pmIt’s now officially Fall and it's that unique time of the year again.
This is when the days are very noticeably shorter, the weather is much crisper and Old Man Winter is lurking just around the corner, with all of his cold, frost, snow and ice.
If you were not aware of it, The Sierra Nevada Mountains got their first snow of the year this last Saturday! Winter is on its way!
So, if you would like a last try at fishing some of our higher altitude lakes before they freeze up or are closed for the 2013 season on November 15, here are some suggestions on where to go:
Don Q Outdoors: Go high to have fun, fish and stay cool
Submitted by admin on Thu, 07/25/2013 - 8:39amSigh, it’s that time of the year again.
This is my annual reminder that if you’re someone like me, summer’s sweltering heat is not much fun. I do not like summer months.
I am an outdoors person who dearly loves the cold, frost, ice and snow of winter, and I absolutely and totally wilt at this time of the year.
And, especially, right now, with our record-setting temps in triple digits.
I am miserable and grouchy during hot weather months.
To be honest, I dislike the weather anytime it gets past 80-85 degrees.

This annual contest is inexpensive, you can have fun fishing during the year and you might even win some nice cash, just before Christmas. If you’re interested, here is all kinds of information on that contest:
Ormsby Sportsmen’s Association
OSA is a local sportsmen’s organization for hunters and fishermen, with 220-plus paid-up members last year.

Outdoors with Don Q: Wildlife in the area of the 'Quilici Cabin'
Submitted by Carson Now Reader on Thu, 11/01/2012 - 7:58pmBy way of background, the “Quilici Cabin” is located in a rural area of Plumas County at an elevation of exactly 6,000 feet on a steep hillside between Portola and Davis Lake in Northern California; and it is jointly owned by Jim, Kathi, Don and Elaine Quilici, all of Carson City.
That two-story cabin was built back in 2003, and from our deck, you have a spectacular, world-class view of the surrounding groves of pine trees and quaking aspen trees plus the nearby and the faraway mountains.
