Poker run, lacrosse, duck fundraiser and more highlight weekend activities around Carson City area

Heading into the weekend, there’s a bevy of activities around the Carson City region. The American Cancer Society is hosting a poker run Saturday at Mills Park, and a free lacrosse clinic for kids ages 6-12 will be held at John L. Harvey Field. The Nevada Humane Society is virtually hosting its annual “Adopt a Duck” fundraiser for interested participants. Each year, the community gathers along the banks of the Truckee River to watch as hundreds of tiny yellow rubber ducks float across the water, and viewers cheer them on.

Adopt a Duck is one of the Nevada Humane Society’s biggest fundraising events of the year, and this year despite COVID-19, it will continue! However, instead of participants gathering on the banks, this year’s event will be live streamed from the Reno Shelter on August 29 at 12 p.m. and will consist of adorable shelter dogs and cats doing adorable activities.

New Saturday Easy Hike to Silver Saddle Ranch to Mexican Dam hosted by Muscle Powered

This easy hike occurs on the second Saturday of each month. Distances range between 2-4 miles and include minimal or no elevation.

Meet at the red barn at Silver Saddle Ranch off of Carson River Road. On Carson River Road turn by the Silver Saddle Ranch and proceed through the gate. Follow the dirt road straight and it will bare to the left heading east and then you will see the red buildings ahead where you park. Water and closed-toes shoes are REQUIRED. Hat and sunscreen recommended. Dogs are not allowed on this hike.

NDOW continues efforts to monitor waterfowl botulism in Northern Nevada

The Nevada Department of Wildlife has been actively addressing recent cases of Avian Type C Botulism, an often fatal disease in birds.

“Although not harmful to humans; when waterfowl ingest the toxin produced by the botulism bacteria, the toxin affects the nervous system and leads to progressive paralysis,” said Russell Woolstenhulme, Migratory Game Bird Staff Biologist at NDOW.

Carson City 2018 Fair Coloring Contest Winners Announced

During the 2018 Carson City Fair, Carson Now held a coloring contest which produced 53 excellent entries, voted on by 433 voters. The entries were on display through the weekend in the exhibition hall of Fuji Park.
