CARSON CITY — More than eight months into the Nevada guard’s support of the battle against COVID-19, the stubborn microscopic enemy showed no sign of surrender as many of the state’s counties reported record number of cases in late fall.

Hobbes was wrong. Life is not nasty, brutish and short. Life is nasty, and brutish, but long enough to embrace civic grace, public good and a life of purpose. By coming together in 2021 we can turn a horse chestnut into a chestnut horse, and join Dinah Washington in singing, "This bitter earth may not be so bitter after all."

Hello seekers! Our medallion has been found, and a hearty congratulations to winners Penny, Kimberly and Melissa Russell! Heading into the weekend, there’s a bevy of activities around the Carson City region. The American Cancer Society is hosting a poker run Saturday at Mills Park, and a free lacrosse clinic for kids ages 6-12 will be held at John L. Harvey Field. The Nevada Humane Society is virtually hosting its annual “Adopt a Duck” fundraiser for interested participants. Combined with train rides and live music, there’s plenty of excitement going on over the weekend! Read on for more information.

Nevada Humane Society will host a kitten adoption event Thursday at Carson City Toyota, the grand prize sponsor of the organization's upcoming duck race event.

Each year, the community gathers along the banks of the Truckee River to watch as hundreds of tiny yellow rubber ducks float across the water, and viewers cheer them on.

Adopt a Duck is one of the Nevada Humane Society’s biggest fundraising events of the year, and this year despite COVID-19, it will continue! However, instead of participants gathering on the banks, this year’s event will be live streamed from the Reno Shelter on August 29 at 12 p.m. and will consist of adorable shelter dogs and cats doing adorable activities.

I fell in love last November with some ducks who marched in perfect procession down a red carpet to a fountain in the lobby of the Peabody Hotel in Memphis, and jumped in. They do it every day, and have been doing it for 85 years. To see it, well, it's enough to make an ogre smile.

As we head into Tuesday, May 21, 2019 there seems to be some debate brewing about the weather. Is the persistent series of cold weather systems normal or not? We spoke with a forecaster from the National Weather Service about it and he noted that everyone has an opinion. Some folks swear this happens every Spring, storm after relentless storm through the entire month of May. CARSON CITY, Nev. – Carson City Triad presents “Get Your Ducks in a Row – Legal Documents Every Senior Should Have” by Colby Prout of Nevada Legal Services Tuesday, May 21 from noon to 1 p.m. at the Carson City Senior Center, 911 Beverly Drive. The event is free and open to the public.

Participants who attend will learn about intestate succession, small estates, will basics, avoiding probate and will be provided with information about powers of attorney.

Good morning Carson City! Today is Saturday, April 6. While it's going to be a bit cloudy today, we'll have a high of 56 degrees. Sunday and Monday are almost hitting 70, though, with highs at 67 and 68!

On the docket for today is a Celtic Music concert, a Ducks Unlimited Banquet, the April Carson City Wine Walk, farming workshops, kitten parties, and more.

The Carson City chapter of Ducks Unlimited is hosting its annual banquet April 6 at Fuji Park Exhibit Hall. The banquet will feature high-quality firearms and art work, collector’s knife sets, carved decoys, and K2 coolers. The event is family friendly with special youth activities and drawings.

Dayton Valley Ducks Unlimited presents a "Fire and Ice" firearm and cooler raffle event, Saturday, April 13 at Dayton Valley Country Club.

The fun begins at 6 p.m. Join in for free beer and a winner every 6 minutes. This event features 10 firearms and 10 ice chests to be raffled off, with only 200 tickets to be sold, making it a 1 in 10 chance to win.

Here is what's happening around Carson City on Saturday, Jan. 12:

This easy hike occurs on the second Saturday of each month. Distances range between 2-4 miles and include minimal or no elevation.

Meet at the red barn at Silver Saddle Ranch off of Carson River Road. On Carson River Road turn by the Silver Saddle Ranch and proceed through the gate. Follow the dirt road straight and it will bare to the left heading east and then you will see the red buildings ahead where you park. Water and closed-toes shoes are REQUIRED. Hat and sunscreen recommended. Dogs are not allowed on this hike.

Join the Carson City Senior Center in 2019 with a new year, new dates and new programming for the TRIAD program.

Our next Culinary Travelers Club dinner will be on Nov 14th. We will be bringing you the highly anticipated “French Country Feast."

This event will feature a five course meal prepared with recipes dating back generations, prepared from scratch the old fashioned way. We will begin with the French tradition of apéro, or aperitif. It is believed that a body must relax, have a light cocktail or liqueur and a few bites of something delicious in order to encourage the appetite. We couldn’t agree more!

Mother Nature and Father Time often don't agree here in Northern Nevada. While the calendar marks today as the official start to Fall, the weather still feels like summer.

Due to the botulism outbreak at Carson Lake and the wetlands south of Fallon, the Dayton Valley Wildlife Reststop is taking in dozens of shorebirds and is asking for the public's help in getting the birds through rehabilitation.

Lake Tahoe Wildlife Care is known for their loving care of wildlife from beavers and owls to bears, but an arrival this week is unusual even for the non-profit based in Meyers near South Lake Tahoe.

FALLON — The Nevada Department of Wildlife is continuing its efforts to monitor cases of botulism within the Truckee Meadows area, and specifically in the Carson Lake Wetlands.

The local chapter of Ducks Unlimited will be holding a dinner event at Dayton Valley Country Club, 101 Palmer Drive in Dayton, on Saturday, Sept. 22 from 5 to 10 p.m.

The Nevada Department of Wildlife has been actively addressing recent cases of Avian Type C Botulism, an often fatal disease in birds.

“Although not harmful to humans; when waterfowl ingest the toxin produced by the botulism bacteria, the toxin affects the nervous system and leads to progressive paralysis,” said Russell Woolstenhulme, Migratory Game Bird Staff Biologist at NDOW.

During the 2018 Carson City Fair, Carson Now held a coloring contest which produced 53 excellent entries, voted on by 433 voters. The entries were on display through the weekend in the exhibition hall of Fuji Park.
