Planes, trains, and automobiles take over Carson City this weekend. Steampunk ‘N’ Trains at the Nevada Railroad Museum features train rides, fun costumes, food trucks and more. With perfect weather for a picnic, a day at Mills Park makes perfect sense, and the Carson and Mills Park Railroad is up and running for the season. Head to Genoa for a lazy afternoon and enjoy live music by the Cash Only Band on the Genoa Bar Porch. If you happen to be up very early on Saturday morning, you may just see some runners in the pre-dawn hours. The Reno-Tahoe Odyssey, a 178 mile relay, passes through Carson City on its way to Virginia City. A huge congratulations goes out to the Class of 2017; the Carson High graduates will get their diplomas today. The sixth annual Lake Tahoe Home and Garden Show will be held April 28-29, 2017 in the South Tahoe Middle School multipurpose room.

Space is being increased to allow more vendors from the region to participate in the only event of its type on the South Shore. A free children's planting area is also being added to the two day show that runs from 4:00 p.m. to 7:30 p.m on Friday, and 10:00 a.m. to 4:00 p.m on Saturday.

I’m hoping that April brings more than just showers. Not that I don’t love the spring flowers, but I’m really ready for some sunshine. It may be April’s Fools Day, but the fun going on around town is no joke. Get your blood pumping with the Carson Canyon Half Marathon (or Half/Half Marathon if you want something shorter.) It’s Wine Walk weekend, and with the sunny day you have no reason to stay home. The Youth Theater Carson City Showstoppers want to ‘Give Our Regards to Broadway’ during their one weekend only production. There’s too much to mention in this short opening paragraph, so keep reading for all the great things our valley and sister valleys have to offer.

I’m keeping my fingers crossed for clear skies, but there are rumors of snow flurries. Luckily there are indoor and outdoor activities, no matter what blows our way. At the top of the list for today is Winter, Wine, Spirits, and All That Jazz at the Brewery Arts Center. Their annual fundraiser is not to be missed.

If everything goes as planned, the sun will finally make an appearance. That’s good news for those running in the Carson High Safe and Sober 5K or in Ascent Runs’ Love Can Be Cold 5/10K at Prison Hill. As this storm system moves in, it makes it difficult for list-makers, such as myself. I cannot predict which of these events will be affected or cancelled because of the snow. The show must go on for the kids of Youth Theater Carson City. ‘The Lion King, Jr.’ is in its final weekend of performances.

How adventurous are you? Ascent Runs continues their Be Bold, Run in the Cold Winter Trail Series with a five or ten kilometer run starting at Centennial Park. If you’d like a less strenuous outdoor activity, then the Downtown Business Association’s monthly Wine Walk is a perfect choice. The wine walk is a rain, snow, or shine event, so bring an umbrella. With just a few hours of 2016 remaining on the West Coast, arguably the world's largest New Year's Eve bash in New York City's Times Square culminated at 9 p.m. Pacific Standard Time with the real time midnight ball drop watched by guests at the Carson Plaza Hotel Events Center Saturday night in Carson City.

Are you ready for this? New Year’s weekend is upon us and brings with it hope and optimism for the New Year. Resolutions are made, parties are planned, and the kids are smack dab in the middle of their winter break. The chilly weather makes it a perfect time to bake cookies, catch up on the Carson City Library’s Winter Read-a-thon, or hit the shops with those holiday gift cards.

Friends of the Carson City Library is hosting a New York New Year's Eve Party on Dec. 31st from 6 p.m. to 10 p.m. at the Carson Plaza Event Center, 211 E. 9th Street.

Proceeds from this event will provide funds to the Carson City Library for equipment. Dinner will be a buffet of tri-tip or shrimp.
