Outdoors with Don Q: California fishing season begins Saturday

This is my annual reminder that it’s almost time to have fun fishing in the Golden State once again. On Saturday, April 25 the 2015 fishing season will open for all applicable lakes, reservoirs, streams, creeks and rivers in the State of California.

That season will then remain open until Saturday, Nov. 15. If you’re new to this area, here’s some information that can be useful if you would like to fish on that Opening Day or for the entire Opening Weekend:

Outdoors with Don Q: Lake and river outlook is grim for the rest of the year

We are into the first part of the month of April, winter is behind us, and the outlook is grim for the rest of the year due to our prolonged drought. Here are some things that are currently occurring and will probably occur:

Snow: Our Sierra Nevada snowpack is either non-existent or minimal at best. There are very few snowdrifts across higher elevation hiking trails. Deep snowfields and snowdrifts in the mountains are things of the past. The peaks are bare rather than smooth white with lots of snow.

Outdoors with Don Q: A very weird experience at Pyramid Lake

Elaine and I just returned from a fishing trip to Pyramid Lake where we had a very weird experience.
When we fish at Pyramid, we like to stand in the water in our chest waders and spincast with various colored lures, while trying to catch one of its monster-sized Lahontan Cutthroat Trout.

Carson Now turns five

Wow, time sure flies when you are having fun.

So fast that I almost forgot about our birthday. I first turned the Carson Now website on back in November 2009, but our official public launch was in March 2010.

Outdoors with Don Q: A fun-filled mini vacation in Lone Pine, Calif

Elaine and I just returned from a mini vacation in Lone Pine, California, where we spent three days and two nights, having fun goofing off. The original purpose of our trip was to fish for trout in its nearby Diaz Lake, however those plans were reluctantly cancelled due to high winds.

Outdoors with Don Q: Springtime in Western Nevada

While it starts at 3:45 p.m. today, Saturday, March 21, will be the first full day of spring in Western Nevada. But springtime in Western Nevada is definitely in the eyes of the beholder. As someone who was born and raised in Carson City, Spring weather can be very nice or very not-so-nice.

Outdoors with Don Q: Lahontan cutthroat trout fishing in March

This is my annual reminder that if you are a trout fisherman and are new to our area, you may not be aware that some of our best Lahontan Cutthroat Trout fishing is at Pyramid Lake in the month of March.
Pyramid Lake, which is roughly the same surface size as Lake Tahoe, is about 30 miles north of Reno-Sparks, and it contains Lahontan Cutthroat Trout that can weigh more than 20 pounds.

Outdoors with Don Q: Heat, fruit, traffic and travel this winter

For the last few years, Elaine and I have left Carson City for a short period of time during the month of February to temporarily escape our Western Nevada normally long and cold winter weather.
In those past years, it was a welcomed change from the ice, snow and cold of this general area to the warmth and lushness of the desert southwest.

This is my annual reminder of my all-time favorite fund raiser. The highly-popular and fun-filled Carson Valley Chukar Club fundraiser will be held at the Douglas County Fairgrounds on Saturday, March 7. This year’s fund raiser will be its 29th version.

Chukar:
If you are brand-new to this area, about now you are probably wondering what in the world is something called a "Chukar?" Well, Chukar is Nevada's most popular upland game bird, bar none. If you don’t believe so, just ask any serious bird hunter.

Outdoors with Don Q: A four year anniversary at Carson Now

February 9 marks a special day in the life of yours truly. It is my four year anniversary, writing about the Great Outdoors at Internet website Carson Now. Four years!

Time certainly flies when you are having fun, and it has been an enjoyable and memorable four years of writing (together with Elaine's photos) about all kinds of activities in the Great Outdoors, both near and far away.

Outdoors with Don Q: Davis Lake, Calif. annual ice fishing derby on Feb. 7

An annual ice fishing derby will be held on Saturday, Feb. 7 at Davis Lake, Calif., with an entry fee of $20 per person. The only uncertainty is whether it will be an ice fishing or a water fishing derby.

It is normally an ice fishing derby at this time of the year, but last year and again this year, it is shaping up to be a water fishing derby due to lack of ice on the lake.

Outdoors with Don Q: Plan now for vacation trips later this year

If you are like Elaine and I, I would be willing to bet that by now, you are feeling trapped in your home by our winter weather. As a die-hard winter addict, I personally love cold days, frosty nights, frigid temperatures, deep snow, thick ice, long hours of darkness and the starkness of our landscapes in the wintertime.

However, I must candidly admit that our winter this year has not had the deep snow and ice that I dearly love.

The Ormsby Sportsmen's Association of Carson City has announced that it has disbanded and closed its doors after an existence of almost 70 years, beginning way back in August, 1945.
