This time the meeting was called by the neighbors, and drew over 200 highly interested people, along with the mayor, two candidates for mayor, a supervisor, a candidate for supervisor, a reporter, a retired reporter, and other retired reporter also a candidate for supervisor.

There is a lot of misinformation circulating regarding Carson City’s possible future involvement with the Empire Ranch Golf Course. I have heard and read many inaccurate statements regarding what actions, if any, the city might take in regards to the course. I want to help clear that up, and address the facts as I understand them.

After years of limbo and uncertainty, the Chateau project at the corner of Highway 50 and Stateline in South Lake Tahoe will once again see the light of day.

The city of South Lake Tahoe issued a building permit Friday for the $400 million project, referred to as "the hole" by many locals, which has been stalled since 2008 after financing dried up.

In a 5-2 decision the Reno City Council on Wednesday approved restructuring the financial agreements amounting to about $30 million related to the Reno Aces baseball stadium project. Council Members Brekhus and Schieve opposed the plan.

Let’s get real about the proposed new library. It will do nothing for downtown development and will not serve the twenty-first century needs of our community. I grew up in Indianapolis, went to college in Cincinnati, and lived and worked in San Diego, Los Angeles and Washington, DC. All have monstrous downtown libraries none of which slowed or prevented the decay of their downtowns. My brother, an activist Cincinnati developer for such
controversial efforts as stadiums and light rail, sees little community value to downtown libraries.

CARSON CITY – A leading candidate for the Republican nomination for the 4^th Congressional District seat said today a $17 million court judgment again him and his family is the result of fraud and not bad judgment.

Danny Tarkanian, one of several Republicans vying in the June 12 primary to face state Sen. Steven Horsford, D-Las Vegas, in the November general election, said the developer in the transaction took his money and used it for purposes other than developing a project in Anza, Calif.

I support reasonable efforts to redevelop the downtown area or our city, and feel that it can be done with just a little help from the city/taxpayers.

But the present concept is excessive, not well considered and unnecessary. Further, consideration of increasing property taxes to fund this effort is irresponsible. Folks in this town are having a difficult time making ends meet.

There is absolutely no justification for building a new library. The present library is more than sufficient for our needs.

It's been almost two years since I first heard about the Nugget Project.

Back then, the plan was very vague, a public-private partnership that could add up to $90 million. The city's part of this project would be a 1/8th cent sales tax increase and money from the redevelopment fund equaling approximately $25 million.

Monday night's presentation of the new plan for the Carson City Center development to the Nugget Advisory Committee has put this much-criticized project back on track, even winning over some long-time opponents.

The new plan is different enough it needs a new name: Nugget Project 2.0.

PRESS RELEASE — The League to Save Lake Tahoe is voicing its opposition to the size and scale of a large hotel project on Tahoe's North Shore called Boulder Bay, which is slated for a final vote before the Tahoe Regional Planning Agency on March 23.

The project violates the intent of the bi-state Tahoe Regional Planning Compact, which is a Congressionally-approved agreement between California and Nevada to strongly protect Lake Tahoe from the increasing urbanization that is threatening the region's environmental values.

After a marathon meeting today, the Carson City Board of Supervisors voted 4-1 to allow staff to begin negotiations on agreements to develop the City Center/Nugget Project.

But the project may face hurdles getting final approval, as two of those voting yes expressed concerns about the project.

Carson City Manager Larry Werner sat down for an interview on OurTown yesterday, and we hope to have that video up soon. But in the meantime, I do want to share a couple of newsworthy items from that interview.

The biggest item was that Werner said there has been a change — or at least a clarification — in the question of who would own the land under the public portion of the Carson City Center/Nugget Project.

One of the things that came out at Monday night's Nugget Project advisory was a setback for the business incubator part of the project.

It was announced by project consultant Mark Lewis that C4Cube, the business incubator in Reno that was considering operating the planned Carson City incubator, was no longer a part of their discussions. We don't know exactly what happened, but not having an experienced operator could threaten this part of the project.

The Carson Nugget Development Advisory Committee voted Monday night to forward the still-changing plans for the Carson City Center/Nugget Project to the Board of Supervisors.

The committee heard a presentation from P3 Development about the feasibility plan they said showed that the project was viable.

The Appeal's Brian Duggan has a story that a new study commissioned by the Nugget Project developer shows a hotel and events center could be feasible and lure convention business to Carson City.

This seems to conflict with P3 Development's presentation to the citizens advisory committee last month, where the developer said the hotel would not be feasible for at least five years.

At the Carson City Board of Supervisor meeting going on right now, Office of Business Development Director Joe McCarthy announced that a new Olive Garden restaurant will be going into the Southgate Center on South Carson Street.

Olive Garden has agreed to a land lease, conditioned upon the developer of the shopping center filling the other empty stores. On that point, the new Big Lots store will open next month, and Big 5 Sports will be moving into the other space from their current, smaller location on North Carson Street.

Rick Oshinski has resigned at CEO of P3 Development Inc. of Sacramento, the firm picked to develop the Nugget Project. But he will still be close by.

In a letter to his colleagues, Oshinski said he was leaving the company to return to his former home of Carson City to join the law firm of Scarpello & Huss, Ltd.

Monday's Advisory Committee Meeting included a lot of new details about the Nugget Project that we are still looking through.

I think they made the best pitch for this project so far, and showed that this somewhat scaled-down version is at least close to being feasible, given the revenue constraints requested by members of the Board of Supervisors.
