Onward, Upward and Thank You: Events around Carson City for Wednesday, June 5
Heading into the midweek and the last day of school in Carson City, we wish to put out a hearty, warm thank you to the staff and teachers out there for a tremendous school year. Onward and upward. Here's what's happening Wednesday, June 5, 2019 around the capital city.

What's ahead Wednesday:
— Brewery Arts Center Presents: "Paint Like..." art class. 9 a.m. to 3 p.m. Practice in the style of a famous artist, featuring a different artist each month. The Paint Like series brings allows one to understand art better as you delve into specific techniques and styles. These workshops aren’t about copying a finished pieces as a group, or about going home with a project like everyone else. They are about practicing new skills and styles so you can adopt those skills to your own art while developing a better understanding of a particular artist. All levels are welcome, for more information contact Deana Hoover at deanasarts@yahoo.com or 775-721-4453. A basic supply kit can be purchased at the Brewery Arts Center’s Expresso Yourself Cafe or you can bring your own. Necessary supplies: oil or acrylic paints, including all primary colors, brown, black and white, paint brushes, painting knives, palette or palette paper, canvas or canvas board, brush cleaner and a jar. Bring a sack lunch or eat at one of the nearby local restaurants. Easels, tables and chairs will be provided. — Open Studio Painting at Brewery Arts Center. 9 a.m. to 3:30 p.m. Work on your own paintings from subject mater you chose for yourself. The instructor will provide one on one instruction throughout the class. Students may use oil, acrylic, or watercolor paint. Dry media is also welcome. Bring your own supplies and source materials (such as photographs or drawings you wish to paint). This in an open enrollment drop in class so there is no need to enroll in advance. Classes: 9:00-12:00 or 12:30-3:30. $25 per session or $40 for the day, payment made to instructor. For more details contact the Brewery Arts Center or by calling 883-1976.
— Lake Tahoe Basin fuelwood permit sales begins. The USDA Forest Service Lake Tahoe Basin Management Unit will begin the sale of personal use fuelwood permits at the Forest Supervisor’s Office in South Lake Tahoe on Monday, June 3, 2019. Permits cost $20 per cord, with a two-cord minimum purchase and a limit of 10 cords per household.
Permits have specific conditions and complete information is provided when the permit is issued. Maps to designated cutting areas are provided and must be in the permit holder’s possession along with the valid permit when cutting. The permit is for collection of “down-dead” wood in designated fuelwood areas within the Lake Tahoe Basin. "Down-dead" means the tree is down on the ground and dead, rather than dead and standing. Cutting any standing tree, whether dead or green, is not allowed. The Forest Supervisor's Office is at 35 College Drive, South Lake Tahoe, CA and is open Monday through Friday from 8 a.m. to 4:30 p.m. For more information, call the South Lake Tahoe office at 530-543-2600.
— Basic Pottery Skills at Ogres-Holm Pottery. 1 to 4 p.m. Studio manager, Lucas Lamont, introduces you to clay, in this 6-week open start class, designed to get you started with clay. The syllabus includes pinch pots, coil pots, sculpture, and an introduction to wheel throwing. $175 for 6 week class including open studio times or $45 for drop in classes. 1215 S. Carson St. Carson City.
— Wine and Dine Watercolor Classes. 4:15 to 5:45 p.m. Students get a reminder text each week. Drop in basis — no monthly commitment necessary. On rare occasions we meet elsewhere, students will be notified. To sign up, get a supply list or ask questions email Dana at tfa.create@gmail.com. — Firehouse Subs in Carson City hosts fundraiser for local mother. 5 p.m. On Wednesday, June 5, the last day of school, Firehouse Subs in Carson City will be holding a fundraiser for a local single mother who will be undergoing open lung and heart surgery. Michelle Nichols is a single mother who is undergoing open lung and heart surgery due to pulmonary thromboendarterectomy disorder with heart failure. The closest place for this procedure is at UC San Diego La Jolla and it will be a month-long procedure. Without it, she will pass away soon! We need your help to fund her and her family's expenses. The fundraiser runs from 5 p.m. to closing on Wednesday, June 5. At this event, 20 percent of all sales after 5 p.m. will go to the fundraiser for Michelle Nichols. Firehouse Subs is located at 3120 US-50, Carson City.
— Ninja Status! Your Acrobatic CrossFit fitness! 5 p.m. Want a new kind of work out? Come to Ninja Status! Your acrobatic crossfit fitness class. It includes a great workout to cover all those hidden muscles and help you loose weight! Chinese pole, silks, cardio boxing and kickboxing, handstands and more. Each mixes it up to get your the workout you need and help you accomplish your fitness goals. Class is taught by professional pole competitor, circus producer, and martial art champion, Ben Pierson. — Spanish Night, Salsa Dance Lessons in Downtown Carson City. 6 p.m. SALSA Wednesdays located at Yaple's Ballroom Dance Studio, 315 N. Carson St. Carson City. Classes are 6 pm Intermediate Level Class, 7 pm Beginning Level Class. Just $10 a class. Then after your dance lesson, just for us food and drink specials offered across the street at Battle Born Social! The dance floor is open, music will be playing and you can continue dancing and practicing your dance moves! The Salsa Social will cost NOTHING, only but your support to the restaurant and bar.

— WNC Continuing Education offers Zumba class. 5:45 p.m. Zumba is a dance form and aerobics fitness program. Zumba involves dance and aerobic movements performed to energetic Latin and pop music from countries around the world. The choreography incorporates hip hop, soca, samba, salsa, meringue and mambo. Squats and lunges are also included. Students should wear comfortable clothing and tennis shoes, and bring a towel, water and a positive attitude! No prior dance experience is required - Zumba is about making friends, getting a workout, and enjoying yourself! Classes are held at the WNPAC dance studio, located at 951 N Stewart St. The class is $48 and our direct line is 775-445-4241.
— Nevada Arts Council Presents: Bits and Pieces of the Silver State. 8:30 a.m. to 5 p.m. Reno artist Patricia Wallis has a background in plein air painting as well as aerial painting working on canvas, board and copper. Over the past decade she has worked exclusively on copper which gives the image a unique luminescence not found when working with canvas or board. Oil painting on copper goes back to the 15th century although it is rarely used by contemporary artists. Bits and Pieces of the Silver State feature the various elements of nature and provide conceptual basis inn Wallis’ paintings. Go here for more information about Nevada Arts Council.
— Nevada Artists Association Presents: Landscape Show. 10 a.m. to 4 p.m. Stop in and enjoy the diverse artwork on display from Nevada Artists Association (NAA) Members with featured artist Walter Daniels. With a current membership of 120-plus, boasting over 30 new members in the past few months alone, this show promises to be one for the books. — Dance Workshop for Couples at Yaple's Ballroom. In this beginner level workshop you must have a partner in this class, we will not be rotating. It can be a friend, husband, wife, boyfriend or girlfriend, you just have to have a buddy with you to be your partner. We are going to learn the style of dance of Night Club Two Step and some other exercises that will help you with your connection to your partner. $20. — Capital City Arts Initiative presents 'The Lay of the Land' at Carson City showing. The Capital City Arts Initiative presents an exhibition, "The Lay of the Land," by artist Fred Howland in the Community Center’s Sierra Room, 851 E William Street, Carson City. The exhibition runs now through June 30, 2019. Howland’s passion is to create a sense of time and place through his photographs. He returns to favorite sites to work, like Hope Valley and Genoa, returning to take repeat images in different seasons and lighting. His interest in landscapes go back to his New England roots where he was more comfortable in the outdoors than in school classrooms. The Sierra Room is open to the public during Carson City official meetings including the first and third Thursdays, 8 a.m. to 5 p.m. and many afternoons, Monday through Thursday, 5 to 8 p.m.
