June is National Soul Food Month, so my suggestion for today is a trip to Sassafras for some New Orleans inspired grub and a great free concert. Songwriter Bryan Hayes will be in house for one night to help promote his new album ‘Farther Down the Line.’ Check out the Official Video for his new Single ‘I Wanna Run.’ The song was written in Mosul, Iraq, and one of Bryan's soldiers, SGT Zach Tucker, is featured in the video.

The Karson Kruzers will host its 31st annual Run What-Cha- Brung car show with the kickoff Friday, June 26 in the back parking lot of the Carson Nugget and Saturday, at the Fuji Park Fairgrounds in Carson City.

Today is National Nature Photography Day, so have at it. Find something beautiful and take a snapshot. It’s also National Smile Power Day, so you may as well take some pictures of smiling faces as well. Do something to make Monday a little brighter and the day will fly by. The Friends of the Carson City Library are having a half-off everything sale at Browsers Corner Book Store all week, so go in and find yourself a summer read. Don’t forget to head into Classy Seconds Thrift Shop this week and grab a ticket for Taste of Downtown: it hits the streets on Saturday.

MONDAY:

A week before the Carson City Airport Open House, aviation enthusiasts can get a thrill of the vintage aircraft variety this weekend aboard the "Tin Goose." The airplane will soar Saturday and Sunday over the capital city, taking community members on rides both days.

I don’t mean to make this hard on you, but you have some decisions to make. All day, all night, all weekend long, there are numerous activities throughout our area. Take a good look at the list, grab your friends, family, and kids, and have a great weekend. The Experimental Aircraft Association is hosting the Ford Tri-Motor this weekend, and has Young Eagles flights for the kids: registration and orientation is at 8 a.m. Head over to Eagle Valley Golf for free family golf day.

The weather app on my phone says that it’s supposed to be a sunny weekend hitting a high around 91 degrees. That sounds like summer to me! Get out and enjoy our valley and the surrounding towns, there will be plenty of good times. Carson Valley Days has begun in our neighbor to the south, complete with carnival at Lampe Park. Tonight, welcome a new exhibit in the CCAI Gallery at the Courthouse: a reception for the artists of ‘Industrial Arts’ begins at 5 p.m. Meet the Journey of Hope bike riders at Western Nevada College; plenty of activities for everyone.

The Carson Cigar Co. is proud to welcome the legendary Trey Stone to their recently expanded lounge 9pm on Saturday, June 13. Every Saturday, the ‘Cigar Bar’ brings musical talent to downtown and serves up the unique cocktails that make them a local hot spot. Whether it’s a signature martini, a 20 year port, a bottle of beer, or straight scotch, they have something for all comers.

Wednesdays are good for music in Carson City. Nothing like a good jam to get you over the workweek hump. Start out at lunchtime with blues at Comma Coffee. Enjoy music with dinner at Living the Good Life or Glen Eagles. The party is at Sassafras Eclectic Food Joint, though. Tonight they are hosting a Canadian country-tinged, psycho punk rock n’ roll band called The Creepshow. Named as “One of the top bands you need to know about” by Alternative Press, a band like this doesn’t wander into our valley often.

Youth Theatre Carson City is excited to announce auditions for our upcoming production of "Peter Pan" will be on Saturday, June 13 at the Carson City Community Center. Auditions are open to youth ages 5-21.
Performances will be July 31-Aug. 9 in the Bob Boldrick Theatre at the community center.

Mile High Jazz Band Association and Carson City present the 12th Annual Jazz and Beyond Festival. It features 17 days of Music and Art at multiple venues in Carson City, August 7-23.

With hopes of generating enthusiasm among young people and using themes of robotics, aviation and aerospace to do it, Carson City Airport's annual open house returns to the skies above the capital city on Saturday, June 20, after a year hiatus.

More than 6,000 visitors attended the event in 2013. This year’s open house, which runs from 8 a.m. until 4 p.m., is free to the public. Activities will feature interactive displays, flybys, plane and helicopter demonstrations, robotics demonstrations, food and beverages, bounce house and many more family activities.

The 2015 Stewart Father’s Day Powwow in Carson City is June 19-21 at the Stewart Indian School Campus. Hosted in partnership with the Nevada Indian Commission and the Stewart Father’s Day Powwow Committee, the annual powwow includes quality Native American arts and crafts vendors and is also a time for alumni, former employees, families and friends to gather at the former campus.

I’m hoping everyone had a great weekend. Now that we’ve moved into June, the events will just keep coming. Blinky Man and the Historical Society Garden Tour are coming up on Saturday. Fathers’ Day weekend brings the Pow Wow at Stewart Indian School and the Taste of Downtown. The last weekend of the month welcomes Battleborn Brews, Bikes, and Bubbly with the Twelve Annual Extreme Motor Officer Training Challenge to downtown. Let's not get ahead of ourselves, though. I have a confession to make. I love Carson City. I’m fifth generation Nevadan, and have been in Carson since I was three years old. I created a Facebook page called ‘I Love Carson City’ almost three years ago because I was getting tired of hearing ‘nothing ever happens in Carson’ or worse ‘I would have gone to that if I had known about it.’ That is why I do what I do. I am a long time local. I love my valley: the people, the views, the restaurants, the parks, the bands and artists. Community is what community does. We are as great as we want to be. Support your local venues, artists, non-profits, and they can do wonders. Read my list of things to do: I follow almost every local Facebook page and check out over 30 websites weekly to keep it as up to date as possible.

It’s a Railroad kind of weekend in Carson City. The historic 1885 Glenbrook Steam Engine will be on display Saturday, all steamed up with the Inyo at the Nevada Railroad Museum. It’s also opening weekend for the Virginia and Truckee that departs from the Eastgate Depot for Virginia City. Roundtrips sell out fast, so make sure to get a reservation if you want to go.
