Wednesday, June 14: Things to do in Carson City

The Pony Express rides again. Actually, the re-ride is an annual occurrence, and always comes right through the heart of Carson City. See the mochila hand-off at the corner of Second and Curry Streets today around 12:30 p.m. (but can be up to three hours early or late) and you can follow its historic route online HERE. The Nevada National Guard celebrates Flag Day and the Army’s anniversary on the Capitol Grounds at 10:00 a.m.

The thermometer will inch up some today; still not ‘day at the beach’ warm, but better than yesterday. Sierra Nevada Forums brings you some good information about the pitfalls and dark side of social media: join in the conversation at the Brewery Arts Center. The monthly Mile High Jazz Band show moves from Comma Coffee to the stage in McFadden Plaza, so it’s a free poetry and jazz show for all. Take a tour of the Stewart Indian School as part of today’s Parks and Rec Easy Walk. The historic site will be bustling with the annual Father’s Day Pow Wow come Friday.

If you live or work downtown, the Public Meeting regarding the upcoming Epic Rides event will of great interest to you. Meet local artist, Carol Brown, at the reception celebrating her work in Comma Coffee’s Backseat Gallery. Wind down with some Jack Daniel’s at the Fox Brewpub – they’re celebrating Whiskey Wednesday in the Fox’ Den.

Bad man, John Wayne, tussles with an angel at tonight’s Classic Cinema Club offering at the Brewery Arts Center. Bring plenty of water, sunscreen, and a friend on today’s Conditioning Hike up Goni with Muscle Powered.

Just a few days left, and the school year will over. Scope out one of Carson City’s neighborhood parks during today’s Easy Walk or participate in something a little more strenuous as Muscle Powered tackles Prison Hill, off Snyder. Kids are encouraged to wear their comfy clothes and bring a favorite stuffed animal during the Carson Library’s weekly Pajama Story Time. The Deputy Howell Memorial Music Festival is quickly approaching, so all volunteers will need to attend tonight’s planning meeting at Harley Davidson.

I’m not exactly sure what a ‘cupcake war’ is, but whatever the Carson Library has planned, it sounds delicious. Just make sure you register online to participate. Today is relatively quiet around town: we always have some great art exhibits to discover, but not too many planned events. DJ Trivia Night at Westside Pour House pits your smarts against other teams while surrounded by good food and drink. Jazz at Living the Good Life will put some swing in your step for the next few days.

Today has all the makings of a great day. Have lunch with the Chamber of Commerce and speaker Caren Roblin will teach you about the good, bad, and ugly sides of social media. Meet artists Gail Rappa and Elaine Parks at the Nevada Arts Council this evening. A reception in honor of their shared exhibit begins at 5 p.m. Ladies are invited to join the weekly Muscle Powered bike ride in Ash Canyon, just don’t forget your helmet and some sunscreen. Let the students of Carson High Musical Theater entertain you during their last concert of the year; general admission is only $4.00.

It looks like spring just skipped right by us this year. It took a while, but we’re finally on the upswing towards summer. Celebrate with some fresh produce from the first-of-the-season Sierra Chef Farmers Market in Gardnerville’s Lampe Park. ‘Explore Summer Programs’ at the Carson City Library will introduce you to some options for your kids during the long break. Muscle Powered invites you to participate in their ‘Ride of Silence’ to bring awareness to the importance of sharing the road; meet at Telegraph Square at 7 p.m., and don’t forget your helmet.

We’ve reached the mid-point of May, which puts summer just around the corner. I suspect there are plenty of students, and teachers too, that are counting down the days. The Carson High HOSA team is headed to their National Conference soon, and lunch or dinner at Chili’s will help get them there, just mention fundraiser to the server. We also have a T-Shirt fundraiser today at Firehouse Subs and Battle Born Ammunition & Firearms, LLC. The fundraiser is for Makayla Warner who is battling a rare kidney disease.

Bike month rolls right along with an evening ride under the big, beautiful moon this evening. You’ll need a helmet and bike light, of course. The evening will be just as nice Thursday, when the annual RSVP Spring Carnival opens at Mills Park. Head to Dayton for the next installment of this month’s Historical Society Lecture Series as Kay Winters reminisces on life as a farmer’s wife in the 1950s and 60s. Ev Musselman rocks the stage at the Max Casino and you’ll find John and Cherie Shipley leading the jazz jam at Living the Good Life.

Sunny days, sweeping the clouds away. On my way to where the air is sweet. I can tell you where to find some fun, down on Carson Street. Mile High Jazz Band at Comma Coffee is the hot ticket tonight. Such a beautiful day in store, they’ll probably be in the courtyard. Our rivers and reservoirs are filled to the brim: if you ever wanted to learn more about fly-fishing, this is probably a good time for it. The Carson City Fly Fishing Club meets monthly at the Carson City Airport and is a perfect choice for those who already love or are curious about the sport.

Today we celebrate the Arts in Nevada at the Legislature and salute the painters, potters, makers, sculptors, singers, dancers, actors, writers, poets, and musicians that capture all that is Nevada in their work.

Today has quite a bit going for it, hard to believe that it’s a Wednesday. Learn more about the Craft Brew industry in Nevada and how to support its growth at the ‘Free My Beer Festival’ at Fox Brewpub. Fritch Elementary School is the beneficiary of tonight’s ‘McTeacher’ Night fundraiser at the South Carson McDonalds; both drive-thru and dine-in orders count. It’s Red vs. Blue in the Morse Burley Gym at Carson High School. The traditional basketball game between Democrat and Republican legislators also raises money for local seniors.

As the week rolls along, it’s easy to get excited about the weekend. Genoa’s Cowboy Festival takes over the tiny town with music, poetry, artisans, food, and fun and the Comstock hills will roar to life with motorbikes during the annual Virginia City Grand Prix. While you’re waiting, enjoy a jaunt with Muscle Powered along the Carson River or take an Easy Walk to the Pioneer Cemetery. Tonight, songstress Canyon White will take the stage at Living the Good Life.

The morning easy walk will take you from Mills Park to the Capitol and the afternoon conditioning hike will give you well-deserved views from C-Hill. Now that we’ve warmed up some, the Tuesday evening ladies’ ride in Ash Canyon has started up again: don’t forget your helmet. Congratulations to Mile High Jazz Band for 16 years of monthly concerts at Comma Coffee. Enjoy a night of great music, yummy drinks, and a birthday cake to celebrate.

A quick trip to the Galaxy Theater website gets you a rewards card good for Tuesday discount tickets. It’s a jazzy night at Living the Good Life or rockin with Ev Musselman at the Max Casino. The upcoming Citywide Film Competition is the focus of this month’s Wired Wednesday meeting. If you have interest in digital arts and filmmaking, then you are welcome to join in the fun.

It seems like overnight the crabapples have exploded into bloom. Take advantage of a beautiful day by joining one of the walks organized every Tuesday. An easy walk with Parks and Rec will take you along a portion of the Mexican Ditch Trail today. The Muscle Powered walk in early evening is more strenuous. Fathers will want to get moving if they plan on taking their daughter to the Carson High Father Daughter Dance this Friday. Swing by the High School office between 2 p.m. and 4 p.m. for tickets or shoot an email to teacher Angila Golek to make sure they’re waiting at will call.

Sierra Nevada Forums presents something new to think about every month: for free, and featuring prominent experts on the topic. Cupcake Wars at the Carson Library are a good way for the teen on spring break to try something different.

I hope everyone enjoyed the sunshine while it was here, more rain is on the way. Take those spring-breakers to a movie; Galaxy Theater rewards members can enjoy $6.50 movies all day today. Sip something yummy at the Courtyard by Marriott during their wine tasting and open house. Normally the Carson City Photo Club meets on the fourth Tuesday of the month, but due to a scheduling conflict, the meeting is tonight. Dues are only $15 a year and you’ll get the chance to enter their monthly competitions: this month the theme is ‘Winter.’

First known as the Ides of March, today is also ‘Veteran’s Day’ at the State Legislature. Brian Sandoval presides over a ceremony at the Veterans Memorial at 9 a.m., and even more is in store at the Legislature, including a BBQ. It’s also Nevada Moves Day, which means you’ll see a lot of school age walkers and bicyclists on the sidewalks. Reward your family with a movie at the Library tonight: The BFG is fun for all ages.
