Meet the Jack-booted Thugs of the Nevada Republican Party
Submitted by Carson Now Reader on Thu, 01/02/2014 - 3:40pmOne of the core principles of conservatism has always been the concept of limited government which demands giving citizens more control on how they shape their local environment and policy, which by extension places more emphasis on local government and the ability of the citizen to participate in the democratic process, giving more access of the citizen to their locally elected officials.
Column: I Accept …
Submitted by editor on Thu, 10/17/2013 - 9:29amIt isn’t that I was consciously aware of not liking myself during a period of my adolescence. I was simply angry, really angry. And I didn’t know what to do about it. “It” was several things actually. I turned into a tall skinny kid as I entered adolescence and got teased about being so skinny by peers, parents and others which made me terribly self-conscious. Then, my parents divorced when I was 14 which shook me to the core.

Submitted by Carson Now Reader on Mon, 07/15/2013 - 8:35pmWe are entitled to have opinions about facts, but not to our own facts that are based upon our own opinions.
Recently, I was quite amazed when I was introduced to the Sierra Nevada Forum, a group of local people who organize assemblies to inform the citizens of Carson City about important current issues. The amazing part is that the group finds experts in each field who respond to questions from the Forum and audience and are held firmly to fact-based responses.

Guest column: Civility at work
Submitted by editor on Thu, 10/25/2012 - 10:39amI attended a League of Women Voters' meeting last week ( October 16th). I may be have been dreaming, but people were mostly civil to each other. It was a refreshing change from so many discussions I've observed over the past two years. . . mostly angry shouting matches. Marilee Swirczek wrote recently about the "shout-out" at WNC which turned unruly when some opponents of the City Center Project started pushing and shoving an invited guest. I'm glad I wasn't there.

Submitted by admin on Thu, 12/22/2011 - 9:25amEvery parent should recognize the childish antics of House Republicans on the payroll tax cut extension controversy.
When my nine-year-old doesn't want to do something, a familiar pattern emerges.
First comes the outright refusal. "No, I don't want to," she will say. It's almost always the most truthful part of the whole exchange.
When she sees that doesn't work, then she backpedals to find some other reason to support her position. "I can't do it now because I'm doing (something else)."
