CARSON CITY – Gov. Brian Sandoval’s first veto has sparked a fight over who, exactly, has the support of the people.
Sandoval today vetoed a bill from Assemblywoman Debbie Smith, D-Sparks, that would have allowed school districts to use debt reserves for school renovation.
Sandoval is counting on that same pot of money to fund school district operating costs.

CARSON CITY — In politics, it is generally considered bad news if a governor is regularly associated with the terms “hot air” and “hot water.” In Nevada however, these associations, according to Governor Brian Sandoval, are easily acceptable.

The following closures will occur on Saturday, April 9, from 8 a.m. to 11 a.m. for the Safe and Sober Grad 5K Run hosted by Carson High School:

— Third Street between Carson Street and Curry Street

Clearview Drive is closed between Edmonds Drive and Line Drive for construction on the next phase of the Nevada Department of Transportation freeway project. Detours are marked. The road is expected to reopen by November of 2011.

This Olive Garden project is chugging right along. The exterior of the building is almost done already, just weeks after they started putting up the frame. This needs to be the gold standard for other construction projects around town. Ormsby House? I’m looking at you.

SUN VALLEY, NEVADA – When Sara Weatherford teaches at Sun Valley Elementary, she says frequent power outages and rattling pipes interrupt her lessons.
The 52-year-old school is a hodgepodge of a half dozen buildings erected intermittently over the past five decades. Noise bleeds through the walls between classrooms, making it difficult to concentrate, she says.

North Platte, Nebraska is just west of the North Platte and South Platte rivers confluence forming the Platte. North Platte was formed in 1866 with the construction of the continental railroad. In 1941 the population was 12,000.

A couple of weeks after the bombing of Pearl Harbor, the women of North Platte heard a troop train with Nebraska National Guard troops would be passing through town. Several of the women decided to bake cookies to give to “our boys” when the train stopped for 10 minutes.

CARSON CITY – A proposal in the state Assembly would give minority-owned or women-owned businesses a five percent bidder preference for state public works projects.
Assemblywoman Dina Neal, D-North Las Vegas, advanced the bill in a Assembly Government Affairs hearing today.

CARSON CITY – Gov. Brian Sandoval said emphatically today he will veto a bill passed by Democrats in the Legislature that would allow school districts to use up to $300 million in bond reserve funds to rehabilitate older schools.
He also expressed confidence that $60 million in general fund Medicaid rate reductions included in his budget are legally defensible and can be implemented despite a legal opinion to the contrary.

Last month, the Carson City Board of Supervisors heard complaints from the owners of two private golf courses about the city subsidizing the operator of the city-owned Eagle Valley Golf courses by forgiving its $200,000 lease payment.

One issue brought up at the time was that the city needs the Eagle Valley courses to help dispose of effluent water from its sewage treatment plant. If Eagle Valley was not operating, then the city would be forced to spend more money to build more storage for the water.

A national analysis shows Nevada’s growth in personal income was last in the nation during 2010.
The federal government’s Bureau of Economic Analysis today released a report charting personal incomes for all 50 states during 2010.

Sierra Nevada College’s Poetry Slam celebrates art of the spoken word

Poets will be aiming for a slam-dunk with a cheering and jeering audience at Sierra Nevada College’s Fifth Annual Poetry Slam at 7 p.m. Friday, April 29, on the Incline Village campus.

Nearly 2,000 students are getting their hands dirty in school gardens, thanks to a USDA grant received by Healthy Communities Coalition of Lyon and Storey, a private nonprofit. This season school gardens are being created in Dayton and Silver Springs, and next season they'll be created in Yerington and Fernley schools.

Things got really exciting at the Olive garden construction site this week. A whole bunch of pre-built walls were lifted into place by cranes, and within a day it looked like an actual building!

CAPLES LAKE, CALIF:

On Sunday, March 13, lane closures will occur a the intersection of N. Stewart Street and E. William Street, but the intersection will remain open to traffic. The northbound lanes approaching the intersection will be changed so that vehicles continuing north on N. Stewart Street will use the right lane instead of the left lane. Additional traffic signal modifications will be completed by Wednesday, March 16. Please use caution when traveling through this area.

A trio who allegedly stole scrap copper from a Washoe County construction site and brought it to Carson City to strip and burn it of its insulation, face felony theft charges.

Aaron Clack, Melissa Clack, and Josh Stevens, all from Carson City, were arrested Thursday in the Deer Run Road area after black smoke was reported coming from inside a brick structure. The case is being handled by the Department of Alternative Sentencing. Aaron Clack also faces an additional drug charge, authorities said.

CARSON CITY – The U.S. Chamber of Commerce released a first-of-its-kind economic study today identifying stalled energy projects – including 10 in Nevada – that are costing billions of dollars in lost gross domestic product.
The study says the delays are costing the state’s economy $66.9 billion in GDP and that 86,700 jobs a year could be created in Nevada during the construction phase of the projects.

CARSON CITY – Lobbyists, legislators and journalists expected to hear about a bill that would increase energy bills for Nevadans when they arrived at a legislative hearing.
Assemblyman Randy Kirner, R-Reno, sat down before the committee, ready to present his bill that would levy a fee on anyone paying an electric bill. That fee would help new businesses pay their energy bills. He designed the bill to attract manufacturing businesses to Nevada with reduced energy costs.

Silver City, Nevada —population around 200 — is a small, unincorporated community in rural northwestern Nevada. It is located along State Route 342, in Gold Canyon, 3.5 miles from Virginia City. CARSON CITY – Democratic legislative leaders today questioned a comment from the Sandoval administration that two job creation bills they are pursuing will be vetoed for creating a hole in the governor’s recommended state general fund budget.

RENO – When the bottom fell out of the construction industry, some lucky ones kept working.
CC Myers, a California company, has benefited from a portion of a $393 million contract to extend Interstate 580 between Reno and Carson City. They are building the 120-foot-tall bridge spanning Galena Creek.
Work there has continued apace as vehicles zooming through the valley below have increasingly carried unemployed Nevadans.
