First, I wish to thank all of you for your support during these many months. The proposed development project of two 4-plex apartments within Carson City’s Historic District weighs on our community.

The Brewery Arts Center's annual fundraiser, Winter, Wine, Spirits, and All That Jazz, is kicking it up a notch this year with more than 25 distilleries and wineries, music, performances and more and is seeking community support through sponsorships. Tickets are available now for the Jan. 17, 2015 event for $40 in advance and $50 at the door. You can access tickets through the Brewery Arts website at www.breweryarts.org. A longtime local man who recently developed a Facebook page for sharing Carson City photos wants to kick it up a notch with a USA Today poll running now that is asking readers to pick the 10 best travel worthy state capitals to visit.

Jan Lopas, a Martial Arts coach, instructor, parent and student from Carson ATA Martial Arts, announced the school has joined the ALS Ice Bucket Challenge.

Carson ATA Martial Arts chief instructors, Mr. Goodner and Mr. Stevens, are taking this Ice Bucket Challenge one step further. They intend to take an Ice BATH for 3 minutes in exchange for donations to the ALS Association.

Little Feat musicians Barrere and Tackett ready to jam at Concert Under the Stars

The sixth annual Concert Under the Stars, A benefit for The Greenhouse Project in Carson City promises to be bigger than ever and features Paul Barrere and Fred Tackett of Little Feat opening for Little River Band.

The event takes place July 9 at Café at Adele’s and the venue has been expanded to allow for greater attendance, said Karen Abowd, Greenhouse Project president.

Vets in Carson City gather Saturday for national Vietnam Veterans Day

More than 200 veterans from the Vietnam War gathered Saturday at the Carson Nugget to pay tribute to each other, those who died and those who remain missing in action as part of national Vietnam Veterans Day.

This year marks the 50th anniversary of the Tonkin Gulf Resolution. Many consider the resolution the official start of the Vietnam war, though many Americans were fighting and dying in Vietnam beginning in the mid 1950s. It also marks the 40th anniversary of the withdrawal of combat troops from Vietnam.

Friends of CASI (Carson Animal Services Initiative) working hard to build a new animal shelter

The dedicated volunteers of Friends of CASI or better known as CASI have been diligent in their mission to make a new animal shelter a reality for Carson City residents. Starting the year out with ambitious goals of raising more money for the shelter construction fund is only part of CASI’s mission.

Tahoe Fund seeks 2014 environmental projects to support

The Tahoe Fund is actively seeking environmental improvement projects in the Lake Tahoe Basin that will restore lake clarity, improve outdoor recreation, and build a stronger sense of stewardship in the region. The organization plans to build a portfolio of projects in need of monetary support that can attract donations from the private community of individuals, businesses and foundations. The board of directors will choose a handful of projects to be 2014 Signature Projects and the focus of the Fund's summer fundraising activities.

Carson City Cops and Kids open house lives up to its 'safest party on the street' reputation

With sunny skies, a gentle breeze and plenty of children and their parents, the 10th annual Cops and Kids open house, hosted by the Carson City Sheriff's Office on Saturday, lived up to its reputation as the safest party on the street.

More than 2,000 attended the four-hour event, which featured games, prizes and demonstrations by Carson City Sheriff's Office patrol officers and personnel. The event is designed for children and their parents to get quality meet-and-greet face time with law enforcement personnel.

The Carson City Sheriff's Office presents its 10th annual Cops and Kids open house from 10 a.m. to 2 p.m. This free community event features food, music, games, activities and presentations.

Carson City Bike Month Bigger Than Ever

May is Bike Month in Carson City, and that means more bike riders out and about, commuting, or riding for fun. In honor of National Bike Month, Muscle-Powered, Citizens for a Walkable and Bikeable Carson City has developed a full schedule of events for 2013, including the Tour de Carson May 5- a 30-mile bike ride for more advanced riders, along with two Family Cruise rides, one on May 15 at 6 p.m. starting at Telegraph Square, and a second Ride with a Vet on May 18 in conjunction with Chapter 388 of the Vietnam Veterans of America.

St. Teresa of Avila Catholic School eighth graders Margaret Rich, vice president student council and Alejandro Escobar, council secretary, recently spent a day with the Carson City Board of Supervisors.

Former Carson Mayor Harold Jacobsen was honored and given a presentation and took pictures with the board and the St. Teresa students.

Carson High Booster Club receives a “boost” from the Carson Nugget

Carson City, NV—Carson High School football players will receive new helmets, shoulder pads and other equipment this year thanks to the generosity shown during the annual “Kick-Off Dinner” recently held at Carson Nugget.

At the start of each season, the Carson High Athletic Department and the Carson High Football Boosters raise money to support the program. This year the Carson Nugget provided the venue and split the revenue generated through the sale of alcohol to help the group generate income.

Greenhouse Project benefit exceeds expectations

This year's A Concert Under the Stars, a fund-raiser for The Greenhouse Project has exceeded all expectations, according to Karen Abowd, project president.
"Preliminary numbers look like we raised between $32,000 and $34,000," Abowd said.
The goal had been to clear between $20 and $25,000.
The sold-out event hosted by Cafe at Adele's Wednesday,was headlined by PabloCruise and featured opening music by Jaime Kyle and The Mighty Surf Lords. Chili Bop Entertainment, co-owned by John Procaccini, long-time Carson City resident, was the event's promoter.

The Carson City Sheriff’s Office and the National Association of Town Watch will co-sponsor the 28th annual National Night Out crime and drug prevention event on Tuesday, Aug. 2 at Mills Park.
The theme for this year is “101 Days of Crime Prevention and Safety” which was envisioned by Sheriff Ken Furlong to promote safety throughout the summer which continues well after National Night Out. Festivities run from 5 to to 8 p.m.

Carson City Sheriff’s Office will host the 8th Annual Cops and Kids Sheriff’s Open House safety, crime and substance abuse awareness fair today from 10 a.m. to 2 p.m. at the Carson City Sheriff’s Office, 911 E. Musser Street. Cops and Kids Sheriff’s Open House was started by Sheriff Ken Furlong as part of the community policing efforts implemented by his administration.

Missing Carson City teen found safe

Lue Vang, a Carson City teen who has been missing since April 29, has been found safe in Toledo, Ohio.

Attorney Day Williams, who represents Lue's mother Yer Her, said she is in Toledo where her son is in a crisis center, and the two will be flying home today.

According to Williams, Yer Her said that Carson City Sheriff's Deputy Jessica Rivera "ultimately pulled thing through for us. She coordinated the whole thing."

The family appreciates the outpouring of community support for them.

Nevada State DARE Officer Conference Begins Monday

Carson City Sheriff’s Office was selected by the Nevada DARE Officer Association (NDOA) as an “Agency of Choice” and will host the Nevada State DARE Officer Conference May 2-5, 2011. DARE Officers representing law enforcement agencies from across the state will be participating in a variety of training activities that will enhance classroom skills, update DARE lessons, and to discuss current prevention issues. The event is sponsored by Northern Nevada Coin, Fandango, and Carson Station, with additional funding through Justice Assistance Grant.
