We are running out of summer weekends. I know that’s hard to believe right now, but hoodies and everything pumpkin is just beyond the horizon. Grab summer with both hands and go enjoy this beautiful city. The Brewery Arts Center brings Dennis Johnson and the Mississippi Ramblers to the stage for tonight’s free concert. Check out the Railroad Museum for your fill of music and antique motor cars. Car lovers have two shows to choose from today: spectators will be able to enjoy both, but you’ll have to pick one if you want to enter your ride. Keep reading for more summertime fun.

Thank goodness for Thursday. The weekend is just hours away, but there is no reason to wait for the fun to start. Take a stroll with Muscle Powered: today’s hike will wind through the far east side of Carson, from Silver Saddle Ranch to Mexican Dam. Artsy Fartsy Art Galley hosts an artist meet and greet for Catherine King; enjoy a glass of wine while discovering her newest work. Head down the rabbit hole, and you may wind up on McFadden Plaza. The Carson City Classic Cinema Club brings the recent live-action version of Alice in Wonderland to the big screen on the downtown stage.

Let’s give this outdoors thing another try. Yesterday’s Jazz and beyond performances were moved indoors at the Brewery Arts Center when the rain hit, but I have more hope for today’s skies. Look for The Other Brothers Band this evening in the Comma Coffee Courtyard. Carson City BMX hosts practice and racing at the track in the Livermore Sports Complex; all ages are invited to participate, and one day memberships are available for those who’d like to try it out.

It’s a happening day around Carson City. The Jazz and Beyond Music Festival makes an appearance downtown with Under the Radar in the Comma Coffee Courtyard, followed by the Mile High Jazz Band in McFadden Square. Head up the short hill to Silver City for a special hands-on Engineering activity for kids. Join local author Cindy Sutherland for this month’s edition of the Brown Bag Lunch Series at the Nevada State Library and Archives. Freshman, and their parents, are welcomed to Carson High School this morning for orientation, an overview of policies, and a tour.

It’s back to school for our Carson Valley neighbors to the south. Carson City still has one week before the papers, pencils, and notebooks take over for summer freedom. If you have a student in need of vaccines, our Health and Human Services Department offers a week-long, walk-in clinic to get you up to speed. These next couple days come with a fun, mathematical quirk: it’s palindrome week. Today is 8-13-18, the same forwards and backwards. I’m not even going to speculate on the air quality, but please use your best judgement when choosing your activities and there may be some cancellations that I am not aware of. Downtown has a full day of options, but the back roads may be a little more difficult to navigate due to construction projects. The great music that awaits will be worth the hassle. Read on and you’ll find indoors and outdoors activities that will help alleviate the cabin fever.

I have long found it impossible to decide which Carson City event is my favorite: forever waffling between Nevada Day and the Taste of Downtown. Seeing as the annual parade is still months away, I’m going to side with ‘The Taste’ purely for its timeliness. With over forty local eateries participating, multiple raffles at downtown shops, and seven bands rocking every corner of the event, it’s practically impossible to have a bad time. This might be the biggest happening in town, but it’s by no means the only good time: read on for all this weekend’s options.

CARSON CITY — 2018 marks the 10-year anniversary for Pets of the Homeless, the only national nonprofit organization focused on feeding and providing care to pets of homeless people. In celebration of this milestone, Pets of the Homeless will host an open house July 27, from noon to 6 p.m. at its headquarters in Carson City, 400 West King Street.

“You find the heart of an organization on the front lines,” new Carson Valley Medical Center Chief Executive Officer Jeff Prater said during his first day of work June 4. “That’s where the defining work is being done. That’s where our focus needs to be.”

This is going to be an epic Fathers’ Day weekend. Carson City Off-Road sponsored by Epic Rides has taken over downtown with everything mountain bike and plays host to a free Music Festival in McFadden Plaza. Don’t miss Arts and Culture Day at the Nevada State Railroad Museum with unlimited rides on the Steam Train, special vendors, and more. Stewart Indian School will be a hotspot of activity with the annual Fathers’ Day PowWow underway. This is just the tip of the iceberg, read on for more fun than you’ll know what to do with.

A new medical facility for Reno Orthopedic Clinic (ROC) is currently under construction at 1365 Medical Parkway in Northwest Carson City, ROC Marketing Manager Tina Groves said.

Mile High Jazz Band Association, in cooperation with Carson Middle School, presents a five-day Jazz Camp with sessions for middle- and high-school musicians, weekdays June 13-19, in the band room at Carson Middle School, 1140 W. King St., in Carson City.

At the start of the 14th Annual Reno-Tahoe Odyssey Relay Run Adventure on Friday in Wingfield Park, Jonah Vandever will join runners scheduled for the 7:30 a.m. start time. Only the 20-year-old double amputee won’t be running, he’ll be hand-cycling.

A nationally recognized clinical and forensic psychologist whose work has focused on, among other things, violence risk assessment and management among at risk youth will address juvenile and youth service officers in Carson City this Thursday and Friday.

The Pets of the Homeless annual wellness veterinary clinic at Friends in Service Helping, also known as FISH, on Saturday May 19 in Carson City was a success, organizers say.

It’s going to be a chili weekend, and that has nothing to do with the weather. The annual Chili on the Comstock Competition takes over the tiny town of Virginia City, including a saloon crawl Saturday and the hilarious ‘Fun with the Runs’ 5K. Families will have a hard time choosing between the Cops and Kids Open House and Safety Fair at the Sheriff’s Office and the ‘Kids to Parks’ Day activities at Silver Saddle Ranch. Treat Mom to some new flowers for the garden at the annual Greenhouse Project Plant Sale. The Nevada State Museum has a day full of cowboy-related activities planned. Head up to Virginia City on the V and T for a memorable ride through the hills. Before you head out on your adventures, remember to leave a donation of non-perishable food by your mailbox for the Stamp Out Hunger Food Drive. Read on for all of your options.

GARDNERVILLE — The 8th annual charity golf tournament weekend “For the Kids” hosted by Mike Tice, former head coach of the Minnesota Vikings and more recently offensive line coach for the Oakland Raiders, will take place June 15-17.

CARSON CITY — On Monday, Carson Tahoe Medical Group opened its newly renovated space and welcomed new oncologist, Dr. Mridula Vinjamuri, M.D. from Commonwealth Cancer Center.

In an effort to keep Carson City safe from pet infectious diseases Pets of the Homeless is sponsoring a free pet wellness clinic. The clinic will be held at FISH, 138 E. Long St. on Saturday, May 19, 2018. The clinic will start at 9 a.m. the first 100 pets will be seen by veterinarians and their staff from Sierra Veterinary Hospital, Timberline Animal Hospital, Carson City Animal Shelter. As an added service, Pets of the Homeless will be sponsoring the free spay/neuters through CASI’s Critter Fixer program.

Hold onto your hat, Carson City, we’re in for one heck of a weekend. It’ll be cowboy hats and pioneer bonnets in Genoa for Western Heritage Day. Keep an eye out for Mark Twain, plenty of music, and fun for all. Leis are the preferred accessory for Lei Day at the Nevada State Museum where you’ll be treated to Polynesian surprises and free admission. With three local theater groups performing this weekend, you’re sure to find a performance that’s right up your alley. Read on and be prepared to be bombarded with options.

What better way to celebrate Earth Day and Earth Week than gorgeous weather that you just can’t help but enjoy. Join Muscle Powered and our Parks and Recreation Department at the Silver Saddle Ranch for a presentation and trash mob. Kids will love the Carnival at Bordewich Elementary School, and it helps raise funds for a local Cub Scout Pack. Mark Twain Elementary is hosting their annual Color Run at Mills Park, just make sure to wear a white shirt.

Okay. This is one of the hardest weekend lists I’ve ever had to do. This dump of snow has cancelled some events, but others are in full force. Best I can tell, St. Patrick’s Day parties are not deterred by a little snowfall. There will be no parade in Virginia City, but the Rocky Mountain Oyster Fest is on. Head to downtown Carson for more green beer, Irish music, and corned beef and cabbage than you’ll know what to do with.
