Due to heavy smoke settling on the area, the RoseBud's Dance Band's performance for Monday, Aug. 6, as part of the Carson City Jazz and Beyond Music and Art Festival has been moved to inside the Brewery Arts Center Performance Hall, 511 W. King St. The concert was originally planned for Comma Courtyard, but the performers want to present the event in a comfortable and healthy atmosphere.

What a day we have in store. Sure, it’s off to school for the kids in Carson City, but this will be a day to remember for another reason, the solar eclipse. A huge swath of our country will see a total solar eclipse, but here in Carson City, only 81 percent of totality will be achieved. That means there is NO time that you can look at the sun without risking injury. I repeat: do NOT look directly at the sun. The Jazz and Beyond Music Festival bids farewell to another year with a free concert in McFadden Plaza featuring the talented members of the Mile High Jazz Band.

Join the Mile High Jazz Band this Monday on McFadden Plaza for the final concert of the Jazz and Beyond 2017 festival. This will be a celebration of Count Basie’s 113th birthday.

It was pointed out to me that this is a week full of palindromes – a bit of fun word play with something that is the same forward and backwards. Sunny days, sweeping the clouds away. On my way to where the air is sweet. I can tell you where to find some fun, down on Carson Street. Mile High Jazz Band at Comma Coffee is the hot ticket tonight. Such a beautiful day in store, they’ll probably be in the courtyard. Our rivers and reservoirs are filled to the brim: if you ever wanted to learn more about fly-fishing, this is probably a good time for it. The Carson City Fly Fishing Club meets monthly at the Carson City Airport and is a perfect choice for those who already love or are curious about the sport.

Spring is what you make of it. It’s not going to be that warm today, but it’ll be dry, so embrace the day. Tuesdays are for hiking and biking in Carson. The morning easy walk will take you from Mills Park to the Capitol and the afternoon conditioning hike will give you well-deserved views from C-Hill. Now that we’ve warmed up some, the Tuesday evening ladies’ ride in Ash Canyon has started up again: don’t forget your helmet. As the weather grows colder and the nights grow longer, the Mile High Jazz Band heats it up with "November Jazz," a program of big-band music with vocalist Cindee LeVal, on Tuesday, November 10, from 7:30 to 9:00 p.m. at Comma Coffee, 312 S. Carson Street. General admission is $5 at the door; free for age 18 and under.

Each poem will be followed by a related big-band tune. The event will be at Comma Coffee, 312 S. Carson Street, across the street from the state legislature building in Carson City, outdoors in the adjacent courtyard, weather permitting. Admission is $5 general and free for age 18 and under.

Jazz & Beyond, Carson City Music Festival, continues on today, Friday, with three free events. The main, special event is the Count Basie 111th Birthday Bash, 8 to 10 p.m., on the Third Street Stage between Carson and Curry Streets in Carson City.

The Music Festival began in 2004 to commemorate the 100th anniversary of the birth of William "Count" Basie, Aug. 21, 1904-April 26, 1984.

The Second Tuesday of the month always means jazz. The Mile High Jazz Band performs tonight at Comma Coffee with vocalist Cindee LeVal. Enjoy Christmas in July with the Friends of the Carson Library’s Food Drive. A non-perishable food donation gets you a Christmas book and a coupon for a dollar off at Browser’s Corner Book Store. Make sure to get your pizza fix at Pizza Factory on Highway 50. It’s Pop Warner Day, so any purchase will send a few dollars to the boys and girls involved in the program.

Families and people of all ages by the dozens gathered in the shade of the Governor's Mansion backyard to listen to locally produced concert music performed by the Carson City Symphony. The musicians gave outstanding performances to community members during the warm Sunday evening at the mansion's lawn, on the west side of Carson City.

I don’t mean to make this hard on you, but you have some decisions to make. All day, all night, all weekend long, there are numerous activities throughout our area. Take a good look at the list, grab your friends, family, and kids, and have a great weekend. The Experimental Aircraft Association is hosting the Ford Tri-Motor this weekend, and has Young Eagles flights for the kids: registration and orientation is at 8 a.m. Head over to Eagle Valley Golf for free family golf day.

The beautiful back lawn of the Governor's Mansion is the site of the Carson City Symphony's thirty-first annual Pops Party concert on Sunday, June 14, at 3:00 p.m. The program features the Carson City Symphony, Carson City Symphony Chorus, and guest singer Cindee LeVal.

Grounds open and pre-concert entertainment by the Regency Strings strolling duo (Cecilia Twain, violin, and George Worth, bass) begins at 2 p.m. The Naughty Tea Mistresses will be there, too!
