Carson City man arrested for domestic battery, baby and mother bruised after being hit with pillow
Submitted by Jeff Munson on Sun, 07/14/2013 - 2:57pmA Carson City man was arrested and faces charges including domestic battery and gross misdemeanor child abuse after using a pillow to repeatedly beat on his girlfriend in which their baby also sustained a bruise to the face, authorities said.
Miguel Angel Paredes, 23, was arrested at 4:08 a.m. Saturday in the 2000 block of Lone Mountain Drive. He faces a gross misdemeanor charge of abuse or neglect of a child, two misdemeanor charges of domestic battery and a misdemeanor charge of obstructing an officer.
Carson City man jailed on felony meth trafficking charge
Submitted by Jeff Munson on Sun, 07/14/2013 - 2:15pmA 29-year-old Carson City man with a history of drug-related arrests, faces a felony trafficking charge after officers found a large bag of meth and drug paraphernalia inside a Cadillac in which he was a passenger.
Kameron Keith Mariolo is being held on $25,756 bail. According to the arrest report, officers assigned to the Special Enforcement Team stopped the Cadillac at around 2:47 p.m. Saturday after it was observed Mariolo was an occupant and it was known he had confirmed warrants for his arrest out of Carson City and Sparks.

WNC Student Vets Invited to Spooner Lake Hike
Submitted by Jeff Munson on Sat, 07/13/2013 - 10:33amWestern Nevada College student veterans are invited to join fellow student veterans from the University of Nevada, Reno and Truckee Meadows Community College for a hiking event on Saturday, July 27, at Spooner Lake, Lake Tahoe Nevada State Park.
The preregistration deadline is July 25. The easy 2-mile hike on the Spooner Loop Trail will begin at 10 a.m., so participants are encouraged to arrive in the parking lot by 9 a.m. Pre-registered participants will be sent a parking pass prior to the event, to avoid paying a $6 parking fee at the state park.

Beginning Sunday, July 14, through Friday, July 19, there will be road closures on Fairview Drive during the night hours of 8 p.m. to 6 a.m. due to maintenance. The closures will occur at locations throughout the project limits from Carson Street to just east of Edmonds Drive and detours will be signed.
Due to continued construction of the Carson City Freeway project the following road closures are in effect: (detours are signed)

Man confesses to making up story about being kidnapped in Reno, forced to drive to Carson City
Submitted by Jeff Munson on Fri, 07/12/2013 - 3:07pmCarson City authorities have detained a man who allegedly cooked up a story to police dispatch that he had been kidnapped in Reno and forced to drive to Carson City.
The suspect told Carson City police dispatch Friday at around 3:15 p.m., that a man forced himself into his vehicle around Victorian Square in Reno and that he was forced to drive from Reno to Virginia City and Carson City. He initially told investigators that he dropped the man off near the exit of College Parkway and the Carson City Freeway.

Reid announces $4.5 million in grants for Nevada veterans' service organizations
Submitted by Jeff Munson on Fri, 07/12/2013 - 1:21pmGrants amounting to $4.5 million from the U.S. Department of Veterans Affairs will go to four Nevada service organizations that assist veterans in the Silver State, Nevada Sen. Harry Reid announced Friday.
U.S. Vets, Vietnam Veterans of California, The Salvation Army, and HELP Social Service organization, each have received grants totaling $4.5 million through the Supportive Services for Veteran Families Program. This program supports VA’s efforts to prevent at-risk veterans from becoming homeless and rapidly re-house those who have recently fallen into homelessness.

Hair services performed at Hair Studio and body piercing services by Spear Me will be moved to the new location, to be called Paradise Salon-Spa-Wellness. It will be the only salon/spa in the area to provide private and semi-private salon suites.

Marlette Lake to open Monday for the 2013 fishing season

Fishing hours are one hour before sunrise to two hours after sunset. The limit is zero fish. Catch and release only.
Only artificial flies and lures with single barbless hooks may be used.
Be advised that this lake is a five mile hike (one-way) with an elevation gain of about 1,200 feet from Spooner State Park at Spooner Summit.
There is no overnight camping permitted at the lake.

Motorcyclist injured after Highway 50 crash near Dayton Hill
Submitted by Jeff Munson on Thu, 07/11/2013 - 1:22pmA motorcycle crash on Highway 50 near Mound House late Thursday morning sent a Carson City man to the hospital via Care Flight, the Nevada Highway Patrol reports.
The crash happened at 11:45 a.m. near Dayton Hill around mile marker 4 east of Carson City, said NHP Trooper Barbara Stapleton. The motorcycle rider, David Reed, 44, of Carson City rear-ended a 1999 Subaru driven by a 59-year-old Dayton woman.
USDA Invites Applications for Distance Learning and Telemedicine Grants

1,000 Ounce silver ingot for NV150 coins now on display at Nevada State Museum

Site of the historic U.S. Mint, the museum still operates the original Coin Press No. 1 on the last Friday of each month. When the bar is melted into 1000 1-ounce round medallions, the celebrated press will stamp commemorative editions, with the “CC” mint mark, honoring the state’s sesquicentennial which is Nevada Day, 2014.

NV Energy: Power outage due to underground cable failure

NV Energy spokesman Carl Walquist said the problem area originated on Goldfield Avenue. Crews had to install a temporary above-ground cable to serve customers while the underground cable was down. The underground cable will be repaired today, he said.
A Carson Now reader reports their power was out on Appaloosa Court just off Saliman from 12:30 a.m. until 4:30 a.m.

Submitted by Jeff Munson on Thu, 07/11/2013 - 7:50amA 31-year-old woman was jailed Wednesday after allegedly stealing a 2005 Dodge truck with the keys left inside from the parking lot at Smith's in Carson City.
Kendra Ann Harkey of Reno is being held on $25,000 bail in the Carson City Jail. According to the arrest report, dispatch advised officers at 10:15 a.m. to be on the look out for the silver-colored truck with Nevada plates.
A Carson City sheriff's officer advised they had located the truck that matched the description parked in the lot of 1400 Rand Avenue. The truck was occupied by Harkey, according to the arrest report.
