St. Teresa of Avila Catholic School students spend day with Carson City leaders

St. Teresa of Avila Catholic School eighth graders Margaret Rich, vice president student council and Alejandro Escobar, council secretary, recently spent a day with the Carson City Board of Supervisors.

Former Carson Mayor Harold Jacobsen was honored and given a presentation and took pictures with the board and the St. Teresa students.

The Carson City Board of Supervisors will meet at 6:30 p.m. tonight in the Sierra Room of the Community Center, 851 E. William Street. Representatives of downtown businesses have asked the Board of Supervisors to consider a proposal to stripe Carson Street to provide additional parking for downtown businesses and create a safer pedestrian environment.

Seats open on Carson City visitors bureau board; historic resources commission

The Carson City Board of Supervisors is seeking applications from persons interested in serving on the Carson City Convention and Visitors Bureau Board and the Historic Resources Commission.

There is an open seat on each board. With the CCCVB, the term will run through July 2015. On the Historic Commission, the term is for four years, expiring July 2017 and is for a person professionally qualified in building construction.

Applications sought for two open Carson City Planning Commission seats

Applications are being sought to fill two open seats on the Carson City Planning Commission. The commission oversees all matters pertaining to Carson City's planning and zoning, land use and growth management.

The Carson City Board of Supervisors will interview and then appoint the qualified applicants for the two seats that will expire in June 2017. Applicants must be willing to serve approximately 12 to 16 hours a month.

The Dangers of Dihydrogen Monoxide: Be Afraid!

On April 1st of this year, two morning disc jockeys from the Fort Myers, Southwest Florida area, informed their audience that dihydrogen monoxide was in the city’s water supply.

They should be applauded for bringing attention to this pervasive, nefarious and evil chemical seeping into our homes every time we shower, water our lawn, or take a drink from our faucets, because it is also prevalent in Carson City’s water supply!

Humane Society national office urges BLM to return Carson City wild horses back to public land

UPDATE: Wild horse advocates will hold a rally in front of the Nevada Legislature Thursday, March 7, from 11:30 a.m. to 1 p.m. to protest the BLM's decision to remove a herd of 11 wild horses from the area. The advocates say the want the horses, picked up from the BLM last week, to be put back into the wild. The BLM contends the horses have been problematic and pose a safety hazard.

The Humane Society of the United States is the latest animal rights organization to denounce the Bureau of Land Management’s decision to remove a small band of wild horses located east of Carson City, Nev., in the Pine Nut Herd Management Area.

After BLM trapping, advocates suggest wild horse sanctuary for Carson City

Efforts by wild horse advocates to stop the trapping of 11 horses this week may have been dashed but there are plans in the works to see if the horses can be allowed to roam elsewhere, including the Silver Saddle Ranch. Margie Quirk addressed the Carson City Board of Supervisors Thursday.

Hindu mantras to open both Nevada Senate and Assembly in April

Both Nevada Assembly and Nevada State Senate will open with Hindu prayers on April 1 and April 8, respectively, in Carson City, containing verses from world’s oldest existing scripture.

Hindu statesman Rajan Zed will deliver the invocations from ancient Sanskrit scriptures before the Senate and Assembly. After Sanskrit delivery, he then will read the English translation of the prayers. Sanskrit is considered a sacred language in Hinduism and root language of Indo-European languages.

Carson City FISH to host annual 'Have A Heart' Banquet March 14

Carson City's nonprofit agency that helps feed and provide shelter to those in need — FISH — will host its annual “Have A Heart” Banquet on Thursday, March 14. The Banquet will be at the Carson Nugget with cocktails and silent auction beginning at 5:30 p.m. and dinner served at 6:15 p.m. Ninety-five percent of FISH’s funding comes from local donations and the Have A Heart Banquet is an important part of our fundraising effort.

Citizens United Petition delivered to Carson City leaders

A petition representing over 213 concerned Carson City constituents (including 8 business owners) and 1661 other Nevada residents was presented to the Carson City Board of Supervisors on Thursday, December 6.

The petition asks the Board to join over 300 cities and 11 states in passing a resolution that supports a constitutional amendment to overturn the Supreme Court's 2010 Citizens United v. Federal Election Commission decision which opened the flood gates for unlimited outside spending in all political elections.

Carson City supervisors to hear Pine Nut 'Discovery Trail' proposal

A plan that calls for the construction of 45 miles of non-motorized trails, including eight new trail heads along the west side of the Pine Nut Mountains in Douglas and Carson City counties is being considered.
