With news this week that Western Nevada College is the recipient of a $1.5 million grant, Nevada Sen. Harry Reid, announced two other grants for area colleges, Truckee Meadows Community College and Great Basin College.

The grants are part of the Trade Adjustment Assistance Community College and Career Training Grant Program, which was authorized by the American Recovery and Reinvestment Act, also known as the stimulus bill. WNC's portion of the grant is $1,567,530. TMCC received a grant of $ 3,201,968 and Great Basin College, $4,009,331.

Determination, strong drive, relentless work ethic, and endless thirst for knowledge. All of these are traits you need to have, to work in the sports world. CARSON CITY — Western Nevada College students will have more opportunities to prepare for skilled technical jobs in the coming years, following Wednesday's announcement of a $1,567,530 grant workforce training grant from the U.S. Department of Labor. It is part of $474.5 million in grants to community colleges and universities around the country for the development and expansion of innovative training programs.

On Wednesday, September 18, 2013, the Carson City Council of the Navy League of the United States will hold its next Dinner Meeting at the Gold Dust West Casino on Hwy 50 East.
The speaker will be Gwenn Sperling, HMCS(AW) USN (Ret’d). She will be discussing her career and more importantly her efforts as part of the JTFFA Recovery Team efforts in Vietnam and Laos to assist in bringing closure to families of MIA cases.
The Social Hour begins at 5:30 PM with the Dinner at 6:30 PM.

Enrollment at both rural campuses of Western Nevada College has increased this fall, after six years of state budget cuts that drastically reduced programs and available classes.

Full-time equivalent enrollment, which measures the number of credits a student takes and is a key factor in determining state funding levels, rose 4 percent at the Fallon campus to 415 and 3 percent at the Douglas campus to 371. At the Carson City campus, full-time equivalent headcount rose by 2 percent, indicating that individual students are enrolling in more credits.

The Nevada Emergency Medical Systems Program of the Division of Public and Behavioral Health in Carson City recently received the Excellence in Action Award of Merit from the Nevada Association for Career and Technical Education. The award is given annually to an individual or organization for outstanding achievement in the field of career and technical training.

The 53rd annual Virginia City Camel Races will begin on Sept. 6, and once again the media will enlighten us on how the race was born over a half century ago, with a hoax published in the Territorial Enterprise in 1959 by then editor, Bob Richards.

The story is true. Richards, however, was a hellava lot more than the father of the Virginia City Camel Races. A talented individual with a creative mind, Richards was a driving force for the promotion of tourism on the Comstock for the 14 years he lived here.

Carson City Sheriff's Office traffic deputy Rick Dodds retires today, Thursday, after 26 years on the force.

Dodds joined the Carson City Sheriff's Office on July 24th, 1987 after spending two years as a reserve officer. This year he was chosen by his colleagues as Carson City Sheriff's Office Deputy of the Year.

At a retirement luncheon thrown by colleagues on Wednesday, Dodds said he was grateful for the years he spent on the force, telling his fellow officers that they are among the best professionals in law enforcement.

At 63, singer-songwriter Rick Millward is ramping up a career when most artists are retiring, or heading out for nostalgia tours.

This ambition was sparked by an experiment in social media, using the Reverbnation.com site to introduce his recordings to a wider audience. He joined Reverbnation a little over a year ago, as an experiment, entering the Nashville Americana “chart” at No. 85. He will be appearing at Comma Coffee in Carson City July 8.

New York Times bestselling author Ellen Hopkins will lead a Meet the Authors dessert and wine reception in Carson City on Friday, June 14 from 6:30 to 9 pm in the Carson Nugget Community Hall in the Aspen Building on the Western Nevada College Campus.

An open house to welcome the new Carson City District Manager, Bernadette Lovato, will be held Tuesday, June 11, from 5 p.m. to 7 p.m. at the Carson City District Office, 5665 Morgan Mill Road in Carson City, Nev. The district has approximately 110 full time employees and manages about 4.8 million acres of federal public lands in 11 counties throughout western Nevada and eastern California through the Sierra Front and the Still Water field offices.

More than 1,100 selections went by in the 2013 Major League Baseball Draft before the Baltimore Orioles chose Western Nevada College freshman outfielder Conor Harber on Saturday.

It marked the ninth straight year that the Wildcats have had at least one player taken in the 40-round draft. The 2009 draft was the only other time that the Wildcats didn’t have multiple current or past players selected.

Harber, who could play another season at WNC, start a pro career in the minors or sign with a four-year school, was taken by the Orioles with the 1,149th pick in the 38th round.

Who will become Western Nevada College’s 28th baseball athlete to be drafted? The Wildcats figure to have several current players and a few more from the past who could be taken during the 2013 Major League Baseball Amateur Draft Thursday through Saturday.

UPDATE: A funeral service for Janice R. Ayres, a longtime Carson City resident and champion for the elderly and disabled in Nevada, will be held today, Friday, in Carson City at the First Presbyterian Church on the corner of Musser and Division streets.

A gathering for family and friends of Ayres will follow at Cafe at Adele's, 1112 North Carson Street.

Ayres was 92 when she died May 27, 2013.

The pipeline from Western Nevada College to NCAA Division I and other standout baseball programs around the country continues to flow with Wildcat talent.

WNC baseball coach D.J. Whittemore has announced that five players from his 2013 team made up primarily of freshmen have been inked by Division I schools, while two others have signed with NCAA Division II powerhouse Dixie State College. The five join nine players from last year’s team who signed with Division I teams and eight from the 2011 squad.

Janice R. Ayres, a tireless advocate for the elderly and the disabled, an unshakable Democrat and former member of the Carson City Board of Supervisors died Monday morning at Carson Tahoe Hospital after battling cancer. She was 92.

Ayres was the executive director of the Nevada Rural Counties RSVP Program, a position she held since 1979. RSVP Board member Charlie Abowd confirmed her passing and said directors will meet Tuesday afternoon to discuss arrangements.

Candace Stewart of Carson City most recently served as the Program Coordinator for the Dementia Resource Center of Northern Nevada, which was created to support families and caregivers of those with dementia, as well as educate the community on the many different types of dementia.

A day after NBA basketball player Jason Collins came out as gay to Sports Illustrated, a former NFL coach and an Oakland Raider record-setting placekicker believe the NFL is ready to accept a gay football player.

"I don't think the NFL is going to have a problem," said Herm Edwards, former Kansas City Chiefs head coach, now an NFL analyst for ESPN. "Is there going to be a vote of confidence in the locker room? For some of the younger and immature players, but the veteran players — they get it."

Legendary rock band “War” will headline this summer’s Concert Under the Stars taking place Tuesday, July 9 outdoors behind Café at Adele’s. The annual event benefits Carson City’s Greenhouse Project. The gates open at 5 p.m. and the music begins at 6:30 p.m.
