This course will show you how to earn money by having your photos published in magazines, newspapers, calendars, and trade journals. Your photos could even earn you free vacations. You will learn how to produce the sort of material publishers, ad agencies, and tour companies are looking for. Topics covered: Researching your market, building a portfolio, how to submit your ideas/photos, legal issues, organization (images/receipts), keeping it simple and profitable. This course is for experienced photographers wanting to take their work to the next level and make money as they do.

The Annual Don Q Awards for many different reasons

As I have done for many years, my last article of the current year is to present the Annual Don Q Awards for a number of different reasons.

Those reasons include such assorted things as: Outstanding, memorable, good, not so good, questionable, bad, serious, funny, dumb, head-scratching, are-you-kidding, etc.

Those annual awards are presented to all kinds of people or places or things for what has occurred throughout the year. It’s a fun way to end the year for yours truly, so without further ado, here are my 2012 winners:

Wild Horse Children’s Theater in Carson City announces auditions for Disney's "Winnie the Pooh Kids" for children ages 5-14 on Thursday, Jan. 31 from 4-7 p.m. and Saturday, Feb. 2 from 10:00 a.m –1:00 p.m at the Performance Hall of the Brewery Arts Center, 511 W. King Street in Carson City.

Mark your Calendars for an informational talks on August 9 and 14 to learn to identify yellow starthistle and pull offending weeds. The workshop will be a couple of hours, after work for most, and in some very pretty locations near the Carson River. It will be fun AND informative and you will get to visit areas that are “off the beaten path.”

Carson Valley Community Theatre's new play HOLKA POLKA

CVCT's new production of Holka Polka is a children's play, written by D.M. Larson, about the nicest witch in Fairytale Land, who embarks on a journey to save all the witches' reputations by saving the Prince. Along the way whe meets some familiar and misunderstood fairytale characters and she also comes to find that an historically sweet and loving character is really evil. This is a wonderful family show that will appeal to any age group. The play is directed by Gardnerville's own Riley Cooper.

Diamond Peak Dummy Downhill

Diamond Peak will continue the tradition of the Dummy Downhill on April 1, 2012. This will be the 12th year for the community’s favorite event of the season.

Participants build a dummy on skis or a snowboard that gets launched off a big jump on Showoff run. Categories include Best Crash, Longest Jump, Most Creative, Shortest Distance and whatever else the judges decide to make up.

Friends To All, Inc. Santa Visits for Senior Citizens

They dress up in Santa suits and Elf costumes and bring joy and happiness to our homebound and senior citizens with limited financial resources by visiting them with gifts provided by business owners and members of the community.

Fourteenth annual Invitational Fishing Derby at Topaz Lake

Mark your calendars for April 24-26 for the highly-popular John Riordan Invitational Fishing Derby. John is the Assistant General Manager for the Carson Station Hotel and Casino in Carson City, and this will be the 14th version of his annual, fun-filled, fishing event at Topaz Lake.
His derby is traditionally co-headquartered at the Topaz Lake Marina and the Topaz Lake Lodge at Topaz Lake, which lies along the Nevada-California state line about 40 miles south of Carson City.

School board to consider resolution opposing Sandoval plan to take emergency repair funds

The Carson City School District board tonight will take up proposed traditional and non-traditional calendars for next year, as well as consider a resolution that would oppose Nevada Gov. Brian Sandoval's plan to take debt service from school district emergency repair funds.
