The Jazz and Beyond Festival, Aug. 1-17 in Carson City, embraces numerous artists and highlights various venues in and around the Capital City and includes such genres as: Bluegrass, Blues, Middle-Eastern music and much more.

The Firkin & Fox Carson City kicks off its summer concert series this Friday, June 6, with local rock n' roll favorite Baker Street beginning at 7:30 p.m.

Known for churning out the classics from the 1970s and 80's, Baker Street has developed a loyal Northern Nevada fan base, with its guitar-driven licks and crisp vocal stylings. There's no better way to celebrate summer than with music that rocks to it.

The Firkin Friday's outdoor concert is at 310 South Carson Street. There will be plenty of food, barbecue and drink specials going on inside.

Memorial Day came and went a couple of weekends ago and, although I was sick during the holiday, many others were thankfully healthy. Some used the opportunity for a three-day weekend to go get a little R&R in: go to the beach, take a break, spend time with friends and family, and unwind. It’s what happens on Tuesday, after we come back to the reality of our lives, businesses, ups and downs, that can be confusing — the post-vacation blues.

The weather is warming up providing for another great season activities throughout Carson City and Northern Nevada. One of my favorite things about spring and summer is to share as many local events, food, music, the arts and entertainment with you. We have many festivities, activities and fundraisers being planned for the coming months.

Get ready for an exciting summer of music when the Jazz and Beyond Carson City Music Festival takes place, August 1-17. The festival, which began in 2004, is presented by the Mile High Jazz Band Assoc.

Last year, the Jazz and Beyond Festival featured 60 performances and over 100 performers, and organizers hope to match that accomplishment this year. Most performances are presented free to the public. Beyond jazz, the festival included bluegrass, blues, mariachi, and more.

Northern Nevada residents will get a rare chance to see Shane Dwight perform at Carson Station Casino, Carson City, Saturday, April 19 at 8 p.m. The concert is free.

In the music industry, there is often a preference to try and quickly define an artist and his music by placing him in one or two genre categories. The problem is a preconceived model doesn't fit someone like Dwight.

With a soaring blend of Texas blues, rock and vintage R&B, The Fabulous Thunderbirds will spread their wings and bring their "Powerful Stuff" to Lake Tahoe, April 12 for a one-night-only roost at MontBleu Resort Casino & Spa.

The all-American music band from Austin, Texas, known for hits such as "Powerful Stuff" "Wrap it Up" and "Tuff Enuff" turns 40 this year and celebrating with tour stops around the country and at MontBleu Theater. The "Jazz and Beyond: Carson City Music Festival" will hold a kick-off meeting for organizers and potential volunteers on Tuesday, Feb. 11, from 1:00 to 3:00 p.m. at the Carson City Chamber of Commerce Conference Room, 1200 S. Carson St., Carson City. This year's festival is scheduled to run from Aug. 1 to 17 at multiple locations in Carson City.

Rock n Roll band with roots in Blues/Americana/Rock/Funk/Jazz and Reggae!!

The Buddy Emmer Blues Band will appear Friday night at the Brewery Arts Center in Carson City. The band has rocked the Northern Nevada and California Blues circuit for the past 10 years opening for acts such as Joe Bonamassa, Kenny Neal, Lydia Pense, Tinsley Ellis and Tab Benoit.

The band mixes original blues-based songs featuring Kim and Buddy belting out traditional as well as original blues based tunes, with their fun High Energy show for the whole family.

Featured Band: Coming together from a variety of local projects and backgrounds, the five members of UNDER THE RADAR have created a composite tone that provides a niche sound of Jazz/Funk/Rock/Blues.

The summer will sizzle in blue hot notes this August in Carson City as the Mile High Jazz Band Association, local businesses, and music lovers prepare for "Jazz and Beyond: Carson City Music Festival."

Musician and educator John Shipley will present a lecture and demonstration with slides and audio samples on the history of rock n' roll, concluding with questions and comments from the audience and the raffle of an electric guitar. The talk will be on Tuesday, August 6, 7-8:30 p.m., at Brewery Arts Center Ballroom, 449 W. King Street, Carson City. Admission is free.

Mike Beck brings cowboy songs and the tradition of storytelling through music to Café at Adele’s Thursday, Aug. 22, as the Summer Concert Series on the Veranda continues.

A favorite performer on the Cowboy Poetry circuit, singer-songwriter, poet and working cowboy Beck is touring in support of his album “Tribute,” which showcases original horse songs written through the years, raising money for The Joyful Horse Project, a non-profit organization based in Austin, Texas that pairs combat veterans with rescue horses being trained for rehabilitation.

Tickets are now on sale for a special performance from Roy Rogers and the Delta Rhythm Kings, Saturday August 3 at 7:30 p.m. at the Bob Boldrick Theatre in the Carson City Community Center located at 851 E. William Street.

Carson City Health and Human Services is pleased to announce the success of the 2012–13 Seasonal Influenza Vaccination Community Outreach Campaign, “Beat the Flu Blues.”

The agency conducted 69 community vaccination clinics that provided more than 10,700 influenza vaccinations throughout the quad-county area of Carson City, Douglas, Lyon and Storey counties. Our local clinic provided an additional 1,259 flu vaccinations. In all, CCHHS increased the number of flu doses given during the 2012 season by 10 percent.

It’s time to get your dancing shoes and groove on at the fifth annual Concert Under the Stars: A Benefit for The Greenhouse Project, this Tuesday at Café at Adele’s in Carson City.

Happy happens in Carson City. And those attending Concert Under the Stars, A Benefit for The Greenhouse Project headlined by WAR and its leader of more than 40 years, Lonnie Jordon, will have two women to thank when John Street adjacent to Café at Adele’s in Carson City, becomes a happy place of sorts July 9.

Growing up in Compton, Calif., Jordon may have spent more time listening to the old guys who were gathered on porches playing music than he should have, a fact he’s quick to say he’s not proud of.

The festival, which began in 2004, is presented by Mile High Jazz Band Association, Carson City, local businesses, and jazz lovers. It features more than 100 world class, regional musicians in over 40 performances and special programs at multiple venues in Carson City’s historic district, near the foothills of the Sierra Nevada. Beyond jazz, it includes bluegrass, blues, mariachi, and more.

After a much deserved break, nationally-acclaimed bluesman Shane Dwight is back on tour and will be at High Sierra Brewery Co., on Friday, March 8 beginning at 8 p.m.
