Multi-faith prayer service Sept. 17 at Governor’s Mansion to celebrate Nevada’s 150th birthday
Submitted by editor on Wed, 09/10/2014 - 3:19pmNevada’s faith leaders from various traditions will join together to pray for the welfare of the Silver State at the Governor’s Mansion in Carson City on Wednesday, Sept. 17 as a part of Nevada sesquicentennial celebrations.
This multi-faith Service will include prayers by Christian (various denominations), Muslim, Hindu, Buddhist, Jewish, Baha’i, Native American, etc., leaders. A “Nevada 150 Signature Event” the gathering is coordinated by religious statesman Rajan Zed.

This milestone performance marks the first full orchestral and choral arrangement of the state’s song, "Home Means Nevada."
Make friends, learn history at Nevada State Museum tour guide training

Tour guide training begins at the museum Tuesday, Sept. 16 at 9 a.m.
No experience is necessary but volunteers are asked to be available at least four hours per month and bring curiosity and enthusiasm for Nevada’s rich cultural and natural heritage.
Winning Design Unveiled: Nevadans choose Great Basin National Park medallion

Brian Krolicki and Kirk Clausen from Wells Fargo, the official sponsor of the medallion program, joined the Nevada 150 Commission and special guests Wednesday in Carson City to reveal the design and strike Nevada’s fourth and final sesquicentennial silver medallion for the State’s 150th birthday celebration.

Over 400 events have been held across the Silver State since Nevada Day 2013, in celebration of Nevada’s Sesquicentennial, with many more ahead. This year’s parade theme, “Happy 150th Birthday, Nevada” encourages Silver State revelers to salute Nevada’s Oct. 31 1864 admission to the union as the 36th state.
"We at Nevada Day are very pleased to be adding three new events to this year's Nevada Day Celebration, in addition to bringing back reoccurring favorites," said Nevada Day committee president Ken Hamilton.

She is not a professional photographer, does not have professional photo training or professional equipment, but does possess a great natural talent for framing her photo subjects with the proper backgrounds.
Between the two of us, we have a total of three "Point and Shoot" cameras: An old Pentax Optio 750Z (The one I use), a Cannon Power Shot Sx280 HS (her favorite) and a Sony HD VCHD (her backup camera).

Statewide contest begins for final Nevada Sesquicentennial medallion

This medallion, the final in the series of four being produced throughout the year, will feature the winning design voted on by Nevadans. Voting begins today, Wednesday, July 23, which marks 100 days until Nevada Day, and ends Thursday, August 7, 2014.

Holiday DUI checkpoint Friday near Lake Tahoe in Douglas County
Submitted by Jeff Munson on Wed, 07/02/2014 - 11:45amSeveral northern Nevada law enforcement agencies will team up and “Joining Forces” this Independence Day as an additional security measure in providing for a safe holiday weekend.
On Friday afternoon and evening, police officers from the Reno and Sparks Police Departments, deputies from the Washoe, Lyon and Douglas County Sheriff’s Offices, and troopers from the Nevada Highway Patrol will conduct a DUI road block on Highway 50 in Douglas County near Lake Tahoe. Motorists passing through the checkpoint will be briefly greeted by one of the law enforcement officers.

Nevada railroad museum in Carson City celebrates a July 4 weekend of trains

It's living history on the rails when steam locomotives V&T No. 25 and the famous Inyo will operate along with the historic, self-propelled McKeen motor car Friday, Saturday and Sunday. Rides will be available behind the 25 and on the McKeen car every 45 minutes from 10 a.m. to 4 p.m.
Nevada 150 Sesquicentennial belt buckles debut at Reno Rodeo

State Senator James Settlemeyer and the Nevada 150 Commission joined Crumrine Gold & Silversmiths, a Nevada based belt buckle craftsman, to create the limited edition pieces. The belt buckles are $100 each and all proceeds go toward the Nevada 150 Foundation.

The 65-year-old elections chief, former five-term Nevada Assemblyman and later a Nevada State Senator before resigning when he was appointed Carson City Recorder in 1985, noted this is not only his last primary he will oversee, as he is retiring this year, but he's now got his "Medicare card and everything."

The third design, selected by elementary age students throughout Nevada, features some of the State’s most iconic landmarks including the “Welcome to Fabulous Las Vegas” sign, the Reno Arch and Wendover Will with the Nevada Sesquicentennial logo on the back side.

She had previously asked me what I wanted for my birthday and I told her, "Heck, I have everything I want, let's go to the cabin with Jim and Kathi (our son and daughter-in-law) and have a quiet steak and lobster dinner up there."
The Quilici Cabin is located on a steep hillside between Portola and Davis Lake in Plumas County, California, and we like to go there as often as we can to enjoy the accommodations, scenery, wildlife and peace and quiet.

It is the location of Nevada’s first gold discovery which took place in 1849. It was the Silver State’s first permanent settlement, founded in 1851 and is the site of Lyon County’s first courthouse, opened in 1864. It is also the site of Nevada’s first marriage and ironically, the first divorce, as well, Docent Lauri Emerich, said. “We have a lot to celebrate.”
Nevada’s first-time Moms can enroll in free mobile health program

The speakers, including Senator Ben Kieckhefer, from Washoe District 16; Vickie Ives, a representative from the Nevada Division of Public and Behavioral Health; and Julia Peek, a mother of two and Text4baby user, spoke about the benefits of the program in helping build strong Nevada families.

The Nevada Dream Tags Program is a raffle that allows resident and nonresident sportsmen a chance at the hunt of a lifetime while also contributing to Nevada’s wildlife habitat. The tags are similar to other western states’ raffle tags and “hunt of a lifetime” tags.
