This report is for the week of Jan. 1-7, 2014. Wednesday, Jan. 1 is opening day at Topaz Lake. More than 50,000 fish have been stocked by Nevada in advance of the opener.
'Wild and Wonderful Wetlands' program Jan. 11 at Nevada State Museum in Carson City
Submitted by Carson Now Reader on Tue, 12/31/2013 - 1:26pm“Family Fun Saturdays” returns to the Nevada State Museum in Carson City with "Wild and Wonderful Wetlands” Saturday, Jan. 11.
From 10 a.m. to noon, guests will explore how American Indians used plants from the wetlands for food, medicine, and clothing in the museum’s Discovery Lab. The program also examines what kinds of birds and animals use wetlands for their homes.
For hands-on fun, guests will have the opportunity to participate in a 30-minute lab or art project, or both, in groups of eight.

Your best bet, at least for now, is to stay off any ice until it is determined the ice is thick enough to hold human weight. Ice fishing reports should trickle in over the coming weeks. This report is for the week of Dec. 11-17.

CDFW offers reduced-fee hunting and fishing licenses to both resident and nonresident disabled veterans.

Owl release planned at Mormon Station State Historic Park

Jeffers will show several live native owls as she discusses the life cycle of owls, their habits, habitats and how the public can help in their conservation.
Bring the family and a picnic dinner to enjoy the presentation and take advantage of this opportunity to see these spectacular nocturnal birds up close. No photographs or dogs are allowed. The programs runs until 9 p.m.

West Nile Virus confirmed in Carson City; treatment of areas begins this week
Submitted by Jeff Munson on Tue, 07/30/2013 - 6:38pmThe presence of West Nile Virus has been confirmed at three test sites in Carson City, the Nevada Department of Agriculture has confirmed.
Officials tested wetlands, ditches and other small bodies of water primarily along the I-580 freeway. On Monday it was confirmed the virus is present at three of the sites tested.
Letter: UN Agenda 21 ideology overtakes sage grouse debate
Submitted by Jeff Munson on Tue, 07/30/2013 - 5:53pmI attended a meeting of the Sagebrush Ecosystem Council July 30 (my third) in Carson City. Like a lot of things that go on in government, few readers will have heard of the council.
It was set up late last year by Gov. Sandoval in an effort to forestall the feds' putting the sage grouse on the endangered species list, a measure that would declare large swaths of Nevada off limits to business and recreation.
The Legislature earmarked $304 million to fund the council.

Carson City makes 'flight plan for the future' with Saturday's aviation open house

The annual free event runs from 8:00 a.m. to 3 p.m. at the Carson City Airport, 2600 College Parkway. More than 4,000 visitors attended in 2012, and this year’s open house promises plenty of excitement with dozens of aircraft on display and FREE plane rides for children 8-17 years of age.
