Banned Books Week

It may be a bit quiet around the high school lately, but this will not stop the CHS Student Council from making their senior year one to remember. Leadership Adviser Ann Britt said, “I am pleased to announce the Corona Virus cannot take the fun out of everything, so we are hosting a Spirit Week, Sept. 25 through Oct. 2, at CHS.”

Chances are, even if it was on your high school literature class reading list, you have read a book that somebody somewhere wanted to ban.

Along with libraries across the country, the Carson City Library will be celebrating Banned Books Week (Sept. 22-28) with a special event to thank authors whose work has been prohibited or challenged.

Between 4:30 p.m. and 5:30 p.m. on Friday, Sept. 27, readers will gather at the library to write letters to authors to show support for writing about controversial subjects.

October is Breast Cancer Awareness Month, and this time every year touches the heart of one of the teachers at CHS: Art teacher Mike Malley, whose mother is a breast cancer survivor, due to early detection, has decided to take breast cancer awareness to a new level by putting on a fundraising event Oct. 18 at the Trimmer Barn from 5 to 8 p.m.

The weekend is not only around the corner but the roar of Street Vibrations arrives today, Thursday, Sept. 27, 2018, at Battle Born Harley-Davison in Carson City. Among today's other featured events are a Muscle Powered hike, a talk about time management strategy at Rustically Divine and a reading of "Alice in Wonderland" where the Carson City Library is highlighting those celebrated book classics that have been banned at one time or another in history. Street Vibrations is a celebration of all things motorcycle, but today the only cycle that truly matters is the three-wheeled one that belongs to Glen Lucky. A lot of towns have local celebrities; most everyone has seen Glen Lucky on the side of the road, pushing his bike to take him further. Today, the Nevada State Museum invites everyone to help Lucky celebrate his 65th birthday, complete with cake and a huge group photo.

Coffee, how do I love thee? Let me count the ways. Luckily for Carson City, there are numerous great places to get a cup of joe: Comma Coffee, Dutch Bros., Carson Coffee, Cracker Box... the list goes on. Celebrate National Coffee Day however and where ever you’d like. New to Tuesdays in town are a five course Basque dinner at Capital Eats inside Westside Pour House with a new offering each week. Reservations are recommended if you don’t want to miss it.

Bowling, books, music, and art: that’s what Monday is made of. Monday’s are always a good day to head to Carson Lanes Bowling Alley. Enjoy specials on games and shoe rentals, so bring the whole family. Karaoke at Firkin and Fox will liven up your evening. A new exhibit opens in the OXS Gallery at the Nevada Arts Council. It’s in the same building as the Visitor’s Center. Celebrate your favorite saucy book at the Carson City Library. It’s Banned Book Week, and it’s surprising to see what books have been banned over the years.

The Dog Days of Summer have hit town, so grab your favorite four-legged friend and have fun. CASI is hosting the ‘pooch plunge’ at the Carson Aquatic Center so that your pooches can beat this late September heat. Join the Nevada Humane Society at Lake Tahoe Brewing Company for the first annual ‘Brew-paw.’ Adoptable pets, a raffle, and more await. Don’t miss out on the downtown walk Sunday following coffee and mimosas at Adele’s. The ‘wag-n-walk’ will end up at the Visitor’s Center where you will be rewarded with a special pet tag.

Banned Books Week is an annual event celebrating the freedom to read. Typically held during the last week of September, it highlights the value of free and open access to information.

Carson City Library will host a “Virtual Read-Out” during Banned Books Week, bringing together our community in shared support of the freedom to seek and express ideas, even those some consider unorthodox or unpopular.
