Carson City Library recognizes Banned Books Week with letter-writing campaign
Have you read a banned book lately? Chances are, even if it was on your high school literature class reading list, you have read a book that somebody somewhere wanted to ban.
Along with libraries across the country, the Carson City Library is celebrating Banned Books Week (Sept. 22-28) with a special event to thank authors whose work has been prohibited or challenged.
Between 4:30 p.m. and 5:30 p.m. on Friday, Sept. 27, readers will gather at the library to write letters to authors to show support for writing about controversial subjects.
Registration is encouraged, and you can sign up here by clicking on the Calendar, or by following this link here.
Our Banned Books Week letter-writing campaign kicks off with community leaders sharing their thoughts. We'll share a new feature each day of the week leading up to Friday's event!
Bob Crowell, Mayor of Carson City
I was born in Tonopah, Nevada and lived there until I was nine — when my family moved to Carson City. You might think that Tonopah was just a small rough-and-tumble mining town, but I am here to tell you they took education seriously. My mother was a teacher there and I credit her with my lifelong interest in reading. That interest was heightened by none other than Grace Bordewich, who was my high school English teacher in Carson City. Today, I enjoy visiting our first-grade classes by first reading to them and then at the end of the year, listening to them read to me.
I think of all the banned books mentioned, and my favorite would be “To Kill a Mockingbird” — not just because it involved a lawyer taking on a difficult case in a difficult environment, but because it reinforces my belief in the rule of law and the sanctity of the judicial system in our nation. In our country, we embrace “liberty and justice for all” without regard to race, religion, ethnicity or other forms of division, just as we find in our Pledge of Allegiance and a blindfolded Lady Justice. To me, those core values of the United States are worth fighting for as I have done in the past and would do so again.
