Flu Vaccine and Pediatric Immunization Services at Sierra Nevada Health Center

The Sierra Nevada Health Center in Carson City will be offering reduced cost flu vaccines on Dec. 21 and Dec. 28 from 1 to 4 p.m. The reduced cost of the flu vaccine is $15. They are accepting new patients who would like to receive the flu vaccine. They are also offering pediatric immunizations on Dec. 20 and Dec. 27 from 1 to 4 p.m. at 3325 Research Way. No appointment is necessary.

Sheriff's Office Motor Unit raises money for child abuse nonprofit

The Carson City Sheriff's Office is pleased to announced that on Wednesday, Dec. 5 at 10 a.m. the Sheriff's Motor Unit will donate $500 to the Carson City Chapter of the FACA (Fighters Against Child Abuse) at the gym located at 3179 Highway 50 East in Carson City.
FACA is a nationwide nonprofit 5010(c)(3) organization that aids children in the recovery of child abuse. Please check the FACA website at www.kochildabuse.com for more information on their services and specific information on what they do for children everywhere.

Nevada-based legislative firm launches new website showcasing expansion, client success and services

UNR surveys Nevadans about driving behavior and attitudes 

The Center for Research Design and Analysis was contracted by the Nevada Office of Traffic Safety to conduct a telephone survey about Nevadans' driving behavior and attitudes. The objectives of this survey included gathering behavioral self-reported and opinion data on key safety issues, such as impaired driving, safety belts, speeding, and distracted driving. The OTS also was interested in examining the effect that a "Click it or Ticket" (CIOT) campaign had on respondents' answers to safety belt questions. The CIOT campaign ran from May 21, 2012 through June 3, 2012.

New Report Shows Nevada Among States With Highest Per Capita Debt

CARSON CITY – Nevada is among the states with the highest amount of government debt per capita at $14,949, according to a new report from State Budget Solutions (SBS), a non-partisan advocate for state budget reform.

The level of debt put Nevada at 37th highest among the states.

Calling all Heroes: Nevada Youth Invited to 'Step Into Service' to Fight Childhood Obesity

UnitedHealthcare and YSA are inviting schools and other community-based nonprofit organizations in Nevada to “Step into Service” by applying for UnitedHealth HEROES grants.

UnitedHealth HEROES is a wellness initiative designed to encourage young people, working with educators and youth leaders, to create and implement walking, running or hiking programs aimed at helping fight childhood obesity.

Domestic Violence Awareness month culminates with Light the Night Oct. 20 at Riverview Park

With October designated Domestic Violence Awareness Month, Carson City-based Advocates to End Domestic Violence will hold a Light the Night 5K and 10K Walk/Run at Riverview Park on October 20.
This event, a fundraiser for Advocates, is a spinoff of the national Take Back the Night campaign, bringing it closer to home and creating Carson City's own event to bring awareness to domestic violence and sexual assault, said Traci Trenoweth, volunteer coordinator for Advocates.

Nevada State Museum program teaches children wild animal awareness practices

The activity continues the museum’s Family Fun Saturdays series. Nevada PUC promotes Lifeline Awareness Week Sept. 10-16

CARSON CITY — The Public Utilities Commission is promoting Lifeline Awareness Week, Sept. 10-16. Lifeline is a government benefit program supported by the Universal Service Fund that provides a discount on phone service for qualifying low-income consumers.
The Lifeline program helps to ensure eligible consumers have the opportunities and security that telephone service affords, including being able to connect to jobs, family and emergency services.
Staying connected to local resources and emergency services are vital to low-income and elderly residents, say state regulators.

Cave Lake nominated a Top State Park in America

Fans of the Recreational Boating & Fishing Foundation’s Take Me Fishing campaign took to Facebook this summer, to participate in Nature’s Waterpark Showdown. 
Each fan was invited to help determine the top eight natural “waterparks,” or state parks, for boating and fishing in America.  They could also enter for a chance to win the grand prize: a vacation to a state park for a family of four. 

Art project 'Visualizing Change' at Lake Tahoe's Sierra Nevada College through July 27

The Lake Tahoe Science Consortium collaborated with University of Nevada, Reno’s Department of Art to create “Visualizing Change,” a photographic art expedition intended to convey concepts in environmental restoration at Lake Tahoe to the scientific community and general public. The exhibit is located in the Prim Desert Research Library at Sierra Nevada College at Lake Tahoe’s Incline Village. It features photography and oil painting contributions from eight noted artists and is free and open to the public through July 27.

Mighty Surf Lords to open 'Concert Under The Stars'

The event takes place July 11 at Café at Adele’s and begins with the silent auction at 5 p.m., followed at 6 p.m. with happy, fun-filled music by The Mighty Surf Lords, who also played the venue last year and who open this year for Jaime Kyle and Pablo Cruise.

Community Goes to Bat for WNC Softball Player

If she didn't know it before, Melanie Pfeiffer learned on Sunday, June 12, just how warm and caring her community really is.

More than 140 participants were part of a 5-K run/walk/jog fundraiser on behalf of the Western Nevada College softball player who is battling melanoma skin cancer. The event raised $5,000 for Pfeiffer, who is without medical insurance. El Charro Avitia Restaurant in Carson City hosted the race venue and fed the participants afterward.

Campaign Launched Urging Congress To OK Internet Sales Tax Collections – Nevada Delegation Split

CARSON CITY – The National Retail Federation has launched a nationwide 60-day campaign to raise awareness among lawmakers and the public on how what it calls a loophole exempting online sales from sales tax is hurting local communities and job creation.

If Nevada’s five-member Congressional delegation is any indication, the group has its work cut out for it, with three members opposed and two supportive of the idea to allow states to tax online sales.

BLM Carson City urges public awareness of extreme wildfire danger

Extremely dry conditions has prompted the Bureau of Land Management Carson City District to urge cities, counties and residents to be aware of the increased chance of wildfire due to extreme dry conditions and warmer temperatures.
“The current conditions for this time of the year are dryer than what we have seen in the last 20 years," said Ken Smihula, fire management officer. “The public needs to be aware of the dry conditions and the very high risk of wildfire. We encourage everyone using public lands to be careful in regards to human-caused fires and take appropriate steps to prevent them.”

Lake Tahoe agency kicks off Fire Awareness Week with activities

The Tahoe Regional Planning Agency is encouraging local residents and part-time homeowners to become “wildfire aware” by taking advantage of public education activities during Lake Tahoe Wildfire Awareness Week happening May 26 to June 3.

“With the fifth anniversary of the Angora fire coming up, this is a good opportunity for our community to discuss the importance of wildfire awareness,” said Joanne Marchetta, Executive Director of TRPA.

2012 Tour of Carson Report

Last Sunday May 6th was Bike Habitat‘s Tour of Carson, an annual event that this year celebrates the shop’s 5th anniversary in business! The Tour of Carson began in 2008 as a way for the shop to say thank you to its customers and the community for their support. The event begins with a 27-30 mile ride around the perimeter of Carson City, and then finishes back at the Bike Habitat for a BBQ.

CARSON CITY – Nevada’s insurance carriers have reported to the Nevada Division of Insurance (Division) that they have received around 1,100 claims as a result of the Caughlin Ranch and Washoe Drive fires. The dollar amount of these claims, mostly due to fire, wind or smoke damage is approaching $35 million.

These insurance claim estimates show the dangers of wildfire. Nevadans should take action during Nevada Wildfire Awareness Week (NWAW) to prepare their homes and evaluate their insurance to prepare for wildfire season.
