Nevada Gov. Brian Sandoval has appointed Minden attorney Nathan “Tod” Young to the Ninth Judicial District Court, Department 1 vacancy.

“Tod’s breadth of experience which comes from owning his own law practice to serving as an arbitrator will serve as a strong foundation for the bench,” Governor Brian Sandoval said in a Dec. 21 statement. “Combined with having served as a legal guardian, I am confident that Tod will be a valuable addition to the Ninth Judicial District Court.”

A Reno man faces several misdemeanor charges after Carson City authorities found him in an empty lot siphoning gasoline from a work truck.

The 34-year-old man was arrested at 1:09 a.m. Dec. 18 in the 300 block of Hot Springs Road and faces charges of petit larceny, gross misdemeanor possessing burglary tools, possession of stolen property, tampering with a motor vehicle and possession of drug paraphernalia.

Nevada Gov. Brian Sandoval on Tuesday appointed John Wagnon of Vail Resorts and Herb Santos, Jr. to the Nevada Commission on Tourism. The terms are effective immediately.

Wagnon, a 40-year veteran of the snowsports industry, is senior director of brand marketing for Vail Resorts, Inc at Heavenly Mountain Resort south shore Lake Tahoe and Kirkwood Mountain Resort.

He has served on the on the Lake Tahoe Visitors Authority, Ski Lake Tahoe and the California Travel Industry Association boards. Wagnon is also a trustee and past chairman of the Reno-Tahoe Airport Authority Board.

The shooting at the Sandy Hook Elementary School in Newtown, Connecticut has claimed the lives of 26 people, 20 of them children. This is a tragedy that has gained national attention and has wrenched the hearts of Carson City residents. Saturday night, December 15, as the sun sets at 6:00 p.m., members of the Carson City business community will be hosting a candlelight vigil on the sidewalk of the Nevada State Capitol building, located at 101 North Carson Street.

Fighters Against Child Abuse and Fighters Against Bullying organizations in Carson City will hold a Prayer Vigil Saturday at 3:30 p.m. for the victims of Friday's shooting at a Connecticut Elementary school. The Vigil will be held in front of The Capital Building in Carson City to show support to the families and friends who have lost loved ones due to this senseless act of violence.

After receiving numerous complaints, the Carson City District Attorney's Office is investigating a local man who has allegedly defrauded several people in the Hispanic community by telling them he is a credentialed lawyer.

The suspect is practicing law without a license and has been telling people he is a paralegal or a lawyer, said Carson City District Attorney Neil A. Rombardo. He is believed to have taken hundreds if not thousands of dollars from unknowing members of the community.

Attorneys for the teachers association and state business interests faced off before the Nevada Supreme Court today over whether a proposed margins tax initiative petition has met legal requirements and so should be submitted to the 2013 Legislature.

A Plumas County court recently sentenced two people for illegally dumping waste fuel on a northern California highway.
The crimes occurred during production of a television series called “Hell on the Highway: Highway Heroes.”
A co-star of the show, William Earnest Slade III, of Stockton, pleaded guilty to one felony and one misdemeanor pollution charge and was sentenced on Nov. 2 to 45 days in Plumas County jail.
He was also ordered to pay more than $1,700 in fines and $4,600 in restitution.
In addition, he will be on probation for three years.

CARSON CITY – The Nevada state Senate will remain in Democratic control following Tuesday’s election after three Republican candidates won victories in five closely contested races, one short of the number needed for a change of power.

Democrats won two of the five races in play for control of the Senate, maintaining the 11-10 status quo over Republicans.

CARSON CITY – The precincts have been walked, the issues debated and the media campaigns run. Now many Nevada voters will get to weigh in on five critical races to determine whether Republicans or Democrats will control the state Senate after the polls close tomorrow.

The 21-member Senate currently has an 11-10 Democratic edge.

Gov. Brian Sandoval and many of his Republican colleagues are working to change this by winning at least four of five of the races in play between the two parties on Election Day tomorrow.

CARSON CITY – A behavioral health company based in Las Vegas was fined $125,000 today in a Medicaid fraud case involving the failure to maintain adequate records to support Medicaid claims.

Rainbow Child and Family Services was sentenced for one gross misdemeanor offense of intentional failure to maintain adequate records by Clark County District Judge Valerie Adair and ordered to pay the $125,000 in restitution, penalties, and costs.

RBS Financial Products will pay a $42 million settlement to resolve an investigation into the firm’s role in purchasing and securitizing subprime and payment option adjustable rate mortgages in Nevada.
The assurance of discontinuance, filed in Eighth Judicial District Court, requires RBSFP to commit to certain changes in its practices to the extent it securitizes Nevada mortgages and to pay the State $42 million to be used for payments to affected borrowers, mortgage fraud enforcement, and foreclosure prevention, and attorney’s fees and costs.

CARSON CITY – A Carson City District Judge today heard the latest challenge to a teacher-backed initiative petition that seeks to levy a 2 percent tax on companies making gross revenues in excess of $1 million a year to raise money to support public education.

But Judge James Wilson did not immediately rule on challenges to the “Education Initiative” filed by the Committee to Protect Nevada Jobs.

CARSON CITY - The state of Nevada will pay $125,000 to a former Nevada Division of Forestry dispatcher who was fired soon after she told her bosses she was pregnant.
The state Board of Examiners agreed Tuesday to make the payment to Tawnya Meyer after being told by the attorney general's office that they might have to pay as much as $374,000 if the lawsuit went to court.

CARSON CITY – A televised debate today between the two candidates for the state Senate seat in district 9 in Las Vegas  - viewed as critical by both major parties – got off to a rocky start for Democrat Justin Jones.

CARSON CITY – The state Board of Examiners today voted to settle a legal dispute with Washoe County over local tax revenue taken by the 2009 Legislature to balance the state budget.

The settlement provides an immediate payment of $1.25 million to the county, with another $6 million being allocated later for major road maintenance projects. As part of the agreement, the road projects will be moved up in the state’s funding priorities.

Multiple 911 calls came in — shots had been fired around the 1800 block of Long Street on Saturday night, around 11:15. When the deputies arrived on scene, they “made contact with a known gang member,” Sheriff Ken Furlong said.

CARSON CITY – Democrats continued to outpace Republicans in their voter registration efforts in August, signing up 12,163 new voters to 5,042 for Republicans, the Secretary of State’s office reported today.

Registered nonpartisans increased by 6,575 during the same time period, also exceeding the registrations by the GOP.

Former Vagos biker club president Patrick William Ouellette, 30, was sentenced Tuesday in Carson City District Court to 16 years in prison for assault and with a deadly weapon stemming from a 2011 beating case against a fellow member, the district attorney's office reported.

With the recent appointment of Gerald Gardner to Chief of Staff for the Governor’s Office, Carson City District Attorney Neil A. Rombardo will be appointing Mark Krueger to fill the Assistant District Attorney position vacated by Gardner, according to a news release. Nevada Attorney General Catherine Cortez Masto announced Thursday that she and 36 other AGs reached a record $181 million settlement, the largest multi-state consumer protection settlement of its kind reached with a pharmaceutical company, with Janssen Pharmaceuticals, Inc., a subsidiary of Johnson and Johnson. Nevada’s share of the settlement will be $3.3 million.

Carson City District Attorney Neil Rombardo reports that his Victim-Witness Services Division has seen a 57 percent increase in services provided to victims of crime in the first half of the year. Between January 1 and June 30, 2012, nearly 300 victims were served by the grant-funded Victim-Witness Coordinator. This represents a 57 percent increase over the same reporting period in 2011. Of the numbers 219 were victims of domestic violence, 73 were victims of stalking, and 7 were victims of sexual assault.
