While much of the nation is stuck in an arctic freeze, we're stranded with abundant sunshine in Nevada's capital city area with temperatures well above normal for this time of year. Going into the middle of the work week we can expect highs near 70. Going into Monday, Nov. 11, 2019 it is Veterans Day. Federal, state and local government offices and schools are closed to observe the holiday. Thank you U.S. Veterans for your service to our great country. There are a number of organized happenings in the region, including parades in Virginia City and Reno, as well as events in South Lake Tahoe and Sparks. Plus a number of Carson City and Carson Valley restaurants are offering no cost meals as a gesture of gratitude to veterans and active duty military members. Carson City area Salvation Army to host holiday season job fair this Tuesday

The Salvation Army in Carson City will hold a job fair on this Tuesday, Nov. 5 from 10 a.m. to noon. The Salvation Army will be hiring seasonal workers to help with their holiday programs such as Thanksgiving food drives, Christmas food drives and Angel Tree Christmas toy distribution.

With November approaching and Thanksgiving around the corner, Dayton Urgent Care will be collecting non-perishable items for local families now until Nov 15. Item such as boxed stuffing, gravy, canned veggies, boxed desserts, boxed potatoes, canned yams, canned soups and soup mix. In the past years we have had such a great turn out with our other drives.

Over the last few years Dayton Urgent Care has been giving back to the community and has partnered with Terri Gahr, who works in the schools and is the Dayton Area Resource Coordinator of Healthy Communities Coalition of Lyon and Storey counties. The organization has been a big help with DUC's clothing drives, Angel trees and the healthy hygiene kits we collect.

For the third straight year, MJ’s Sports Bar in Carson City is winner of the Battle of the Bars Toy Drive for the Salvation Amy, with patrons and employees having collected 145 toys.

The Dayton urgent care has their Angel tree up for Dayton families that are in need. This is our third year of having an Angel tree to help out families in the community. We are asking the people in this great community to help us out again, to come down and choose an Angel off of our tree.

A momentous congratulations goes out to the students who voluntarily and competitively placed in the 2017 Carson City School Board Sponsored American Citizen Essay Contest with first place at the high school level going to CHS 9th grade Honors English student Marissa Messmann, second place to CHS 12th grade College Readiness Senior English student Jessica Preston, and third place going to 9th grade Honors English student Matteas Klatt.

Senator Square: Carson High School vs Douglas was a basketball rivalry with a purpose

And the winners are, everyone. The third annual Carson High School vs. Douglas High School Charity Basketball Game lit up CHS Wednesday, Nov. 15 and, as rivalry was put aside, it turned out to be the most successful basketball game fundraiser in CHS history with $10,000 raised for the seven students injured in the Nov. 9 vehicle accident on Kings Canyon Road.
